Iris mass lesions are uncommon and often raise suspicion of intraocular malignancy. SIGNIFICANCE: The complications of cosmetic iris implantation may result in irreversible vision loss. Patients who obtain these implants against general medical consensus may present to providers when sequelae develop. In symptomatic patients, providers must recognize the imminent risk to vision and mitigate further ocular damage.

BACKGROUND: Tamsulosin is one of the most commonly prescribed alpha-1A antagonists for the treatment of benign prostatic syndrome (BPS). Patients treated with tamsulosin often develop intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) during cataract surgery. Artificial iris implants were originally developed for therapeutic purposes but have recently been used for cosmetic alteration of the eye colour. A 21-year-old woman presented with bilateral eye redness, visual loss, raised intraocular pressure, corneal oedema and hyphaema following implantation of artificial irises in Tunisia. Combined medical and surgical management led to improvements, but reduced vision and photophobia persisted. Cosmetic iris implantation can lead to persistently sight-threatening eye complications, and we strongly advise against its use.

Ovarian cancer is the first in mortalities among gynecologic cancers in the United States, often due to late diagnosis and/or acquired platinum-resistant recurrences.
