Candida albicans is regarded as the major pathogen in yeast-induced onychomycosis. Based on our impression of an increasing prevalence of Candida parapsilosis in this disease, we examined the data of two mycology laboratories in the same geographic location, from 1994 to 1996 in one (centre A) and for 1995 (6 months) in the other (centre B). Total chromium levels were determined in 38 detergents and 12 bleaches on the market in Israel (45 locally produced, 5 imported). The samples were analyzed by Zeeman-corrected graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Chromium levels were higher than 5 ppm in 28 (56%) of the 50 products, from 1 to 5 ppm in 16 (32%), and lower than 1 ppm in only 6 (12%). Interpersonal factors were examined in 60 couples who reported violence by male against female partner and in 60 couples who did not. Violent men reported lower partnership quality and less social support than did nonviolent men. Battered women reported lower partnership quality but more positive social support than did women with nonviolent partners. Level of violence was predicted by level of child-rearing conflict and the availability of social support for the violent men.

We present a case of black grain mycetoma caused by Madurella mycetomatis. The diagnosis was made on the basis of conventional light microscopy and mycological studies. After 12 months of oral therapy with ketoconazole, the patient showed partial response. This is the first native Israeli case of black grain mycetoma.

Antral biopsy samples were taken from 147 patients undergoing gastroscopy. Campylobacter pylori was cultivated from 100 of these patients. C. pylori was isolated from 76% of the specimens showing any degree of histologic gastritis, but from only 11% of specimens with completely normal histology. A questionnaire was completed on all patients and included demographic, epidemiologic and clinical information. Sephardic origin, smoking, and a bad taste in the mouth were more prevalent in the campylobacter-positive group. Previous use of antibiotics was negatively associated with the presence of C.

The causes of megaloblastic anemia were studied in a survey of patients admitted to six Israeli hospitals over a period of 15 yr. Among the 203 patients identified, 69% had pernicious anemia, 12% had gastrointestinal disease, 9% had primary nutritional deficiency of whom only 1% were associated with pregnancy, and 7% had selective vitamin B12 malabsorption with albuminuria. A serological survey was performed in three Israeli hospitals in order to evaluate the risk of nosocomial spread of the agent of Legionnaires' Disease or antigenically related organisms. Five out of 79 chronic hemodialysis patients had titers (1:512 to 1:2,048) of indirect immunofluorescence antibodies considered indicative of past infection. None of 44 healthy subjects, 37 ambulatory patients or 16 patients with acute gram-negative sepsis due to unrelated organisms showed a seroreaction of greater than or equal to 1:128.
