The range of contact lens modalities currently available for the successful optical correction of keratoconus is greatly expanded. We review lens types currently available for the nonsurgical management of keratoconus, including rigid gas-permeable (GP) lenses, intralimbal lenses, corneoscleral lenses, scleral lenses, hybrid lenses, and piggyback lenses. In this review, we discuss the contemporary range of available lens types and the circumstances in which they are best used.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical results of the use of the YK contact lens (Lucid Co., Seoul, Korea) for keratoconus.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty nine keratoconic eyes were fitted with a YK lens which has one base curve and three peripheral curves. A light feather touch fluorescein pattern was obtained based on topographic indices. Visual acuity, comfort, mean wearing time, and ocular tissue changes were evaluated. Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory, progressive thinning process of the cornea. PURPOSE: To screen superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) on chromosome 21 as a possible candidate gene for familial keratoconus (KC).
METHODS: Total genomic DNA was extracted from the blood of 15 different KC families and 156 unaffected subjects. All five exons of the SOD1 gene were sequenced. For a rapid screening test, DNA was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), digested with HpyCH4 III or analyzed by radioactively end-labeled exon PCR. RNA was extracted from leukocytes and reverse transcribed to cDNA, and the PCR was amplified for splice variants. Some samples were cloned and sequenced.

PURPOSE: To examine the characteristics and risk factors for keratoconus in a New Zealand population.
