Carvajal Syndrome- A Variant of Naxos Disease: A Case Report.

Carvajal syndrome is a rare variant of Naxos disease, a recessive mutation of the desmoplakin gene characterized by presence of woolly hair, palmoplantar keratoderma and dilated cardiomyopathy, mainly left ventricular involvement. The main clinical complication is progressive heart disease which may lead to heart failure and sudden cardiac death in childhood and adolescence. Cardiomyopathy is diagnosed by Task Force Criteria. The goal of treatment is to prevent sudden cardiac death by lifestyle modification and regular clinical monitoring with pharmacotherapy. We report a nine years female who

Ectodermal dysplasia with alopecia, onychodysplasia, hypohidrosis, keratoderma, abnormal teeth and deafness.

The ectodermal dysplasias are a heterogeneous group of disorders with primary defect in hair, teeth, nail and sweat gland function. Numerous types have been described and several classifications exist. Here, we present a patient with ectodermal dysplasia with alopecia, dysplastic nails, hypohidrosis, sensorineural deafness, palmoplantar keratoderma, abnormal teeth and dry skin. To our knowledge, combination of all these features in ectodermal dysplasia has not been reported in the past. The etiology is unknown, but consanguinity of parents points to an autosomal recessive inheritance.

[Acquired syphilis during human immunodeficiency virus infection. 6 cases].

We retrospectively studied the clinical, serological, bacteriological and histopathological data obtained in 6 HIV seropositive patients seen in our department from 1986 to 1989 for secondary syphilis. The clinical presentation was atypical in 4 of the 6 patients, with 2 palmoplantar keratodermas and 2 ulcerative syphilids. The diagnosis was made on darkfield examination in 2 patients, high titers of antibodies in 6 and histopathological examination (numerous plasma cells) in 4. All were cured with the classical penicillin therapy recommended for early syphilis.

Annular Epidermolytic Ichthyosis Mimicking Greither Disease: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Annular epidermolytic ichthyosis is a rare form of epidermolytic ichthyosis caused by specific pathogenic variants of KRT1 and KRT10. Classically, it manifests at birth with variable degrees of erythroderma and superficial erosions, which subsequently improve with time. Later, it is characterized by a cyclic history of annular hyperkeratotic erythematous plaques over the trunk and proximal extremities, with or without palmoplantar keratoderma. Greither syndrome, another autosomal dominant disorder of KRT1 mutation, is demonstrated by the diffuse, thick, scaly yellow PPK with transgr

A novel mutation in the L12 domain of keratin 1 is associated with mild epidermolytic ichthyosis.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolytic ichthyosis (EI), previously termed bullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma or epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, is a clinically heterogeneous genodermatosis caused by mutations in the genes encoding the suprabasal keratins 1 and 10. Classical EI is clinically characterized by severe neonatal erythroderma, blistering and fragile skin in infancy, quickly subsiding with subsequent development of generalized scaling hyperkeratosis. We report three Dutch families with palmoplantar keratoderma and mild blistering, but without neonatal erythroderma and generalized scaling.

Naxos disease: cardiocutaneous syndrome due to cell adhesion defect.

Naxos disease is a recessively inherited condition with arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C) and a cutaneous phenotype, characterised by peculiar woolly hair and palmoplantar keratoderma. The disease was first described in families originating from the Greek island of Naxos. Moreover, affected families have been identified in other Aegean islands, Turkey, Israel and Saudi Arabia. A syndrome with the same cutaneous phenotype and predominantly left ventricular involvement has been described in families from India and Ecuador (Carvajal syndrome). Woolly hair appears

[Dowling-Meara dominant epidermolysis bullosa. An intraepidermal epidermolysis bullosa which hides its prognosis well].

The epidermolysis bullosa simplex (intraepidermal) disorders represent a heterogeneous group of bullous diseases all inherited in an autosomal dominant mode. The prognosis is usually good and the bullous lesions heal without scarring. We present here three patients affected with intraepidermal epidermolysis bullosa of the Dowling-Meara type with varying prognoses. Case n. 1. This 4-year-old girl was first seen at the age of 15 months for numerous bullous lesions distributed over her entire skin surface and on her oral mucosa. The blisters, first noted shortly after birth, showed an herpetiform

Acrokeratoelastoidosis: is there an association between asthma and sporadic cases in children?

Acrokeratoelastoidosis (AKE) is a rare, benign papular keratoderma that presents as keratotic papules on the lateral margins of the palms and soles. It is most commonly inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, although sporadic cases are also described. We present a sporadic case of AKE in an 11-year-old girl with a past medical history significant for asthma. On literature review, we found three other cases presenting in children with a past medical history of asthma. We suggest a possible association between asthma and sporadic cases of AKE in children. Current understanding of the pathop

[Aquagenic keratoderma: 3 new cases and a review of the literature].

Aquagenic keratoderma is a rare type of transient acquired keratoderma that is triggered or exacerbated by immersion of the palms or soles in water. It is characterized by whitish or translucent papules with central punctate depressions that coalesce in macerated edematous plaques. It appears within a few minutes of exposure to water and subsides soon after drying. We describe 3 new cases of aquagenic keratoderma in a 28-year-old man with a history of Behçet disease, an 18-year-old woman, and a 20-year-old man. We discuss the clinical and histopathologic features, treatment options, and course

[Punctate porokeratotic keratoderma].

A 39-year-old woman had numerous keratotic papules on the volar surface of the right palm, both soles, fingers and toes. There were some spiny plugs on the edges of her toes. Histologic examination revealed a cornoid lamella. "Punctate porokeratotic keratoderma" "porokeratosis punctata palmaris et plantaris" refer probably to related conditions "keratosis punctate palmaris et plantaris". We prefer the term "punctate porokeratotic keratoderma".
