[Cystic kidney disease].

The kidney is one of the organs most frequently affected by cystic disease, which can be defined as the morbidity attributable to the presence of renal cysts. Renal cysts appear in a series of very diverse hereditary anomalies, acquired or developmental, occurring as an isolated form or in association with other renal or systemic alterations. Cysts are microscopic or macroscopic abnormal cavities, with saccular or fusiform shape, coated with epithelium and filled with liquid. They origin in the nephron or the collecting tubules, with which a connection can be maintained or not. They can occur …

[Cystic kidney diseases].

Among all inherited cystic kidney diseases, the commonest are polycystic kidney diseases, which include 2 diseases characterized by their pathological characteristics and their mode of inheritance, namely autosomal dominant or recessive. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is usually diagnosed in adulthood and is related at least to 2 different genes; PKD1 gene on chromosome 16 accounts for 85% of cases. This frequent disease (1 in 1,000 people) leads to end-stage renal failure in most patients at a mean age of 55 years. Renal ultrasonography allows its detection at an early stage, du…

[Multicystic kidney dysplasia].

The clinical course of 48 children (27 boys and 21 girls) with multicystic kidney dysplasia was analysed retrospectively. The patients were seen and treated at the Children's Hospital of Medical School Hannover between 1976 to 1989. There was no familial occurrence of the disease, yet in eight families various other renal diseases could be observed. In 20 patients the diagnosis of multicystic renal dysplasia was presumed by prenatal sonographic examination, in the other patients the diagnosis was established at the age between 1 day to 12 years. The first manifestations were palpable abdominal…

[Spontaneous kidney rupture].

Spontaneous rupture of the kidney may occur as a complication of various congenital or acquired renal lesions. We describe three patients with non-traumatic rupture of the kidney, recently seen in our hospital. The rupture was related to polyarteritis nodosa in one case, and in the other two respectively to urothelial carcinoma and to acquired renal cystic disease in end-stage renal disease with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. In all patients the hemorrhagic complication led to a previously unsuspected diagnosis. After nephrectomy all patients did well. While spontaneous rupture of …

[Acute kidney failure].

The etiology of acute renal failure is quite complex, in contradistinction to the monotonous appearance of the corresponding renal pathomorphology (tubular necrosis, intracapillary coagulation). A basic prerequisite for the successful prevention of acute renal failure is the knowledge of the responsible atiopathogenetic factors and their early recognition. Once kidney damage has occurred, therapeutic measures shift to concentrate on the symptomatic treatment of renal failure and the prevention of accompanying complications such as a hemorrhagic tendency, susceptibility to infections, hyperkale…

Unicalyceal single kidney.

A rare congenital malformation of the kidneys, consisting of renal agenesis on the left and a small kidney on the right with only a single calyx, abnormal renal vasculature and impaired medullary function, is described. This was associated with long phocomelia of the right arm. The coexistence of these rare malformations has not been reported before.
