Tuberous sclerosis complex: tumors and tumorigenesis.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an inherited disorder characterized by hamartomas in different body organs, mainly in the brain, skin, kidney, liver, lung, and heart. The clinical manifestations of TSC are the result of a mutation of one of two tumor suppressor genes, TSC1 and TSC2. Cutaneous findings in TSC should be regarded as cutaneous signs of a pivotal systemic disease. The authors elucidate the variety of neoplasms seen in TSC patients, along with their clinical significance, and suggest suitable evaluation and management strategies.

Epidemiological features of canine renal neoplasms.

A retrospective study of medical records from 13 veterinary university hospitals and clinics yielded 73 cases of confirmed primary neoplasms of the kidney and renal pelvis. Analysis of the 34 cases of renal carcinoma revealed no evidence of familial (breed) predisposition, but an excess risk was identified in males, especially during middle life. The morphological and epidemiological features of canine renal carcinoma are similar to those of renal carcinoma in humans. The dog may be a suitable model for further research into the causes of this cancer.

Association of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis with mantle cell lymphoma.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare and aggressive lymphoid neoplasm. It can involve the kidney, either by direct lymphomatous infiltration or by a paraneoplastic glomerulonephritis. We present here the case of a man with rectal bleeding and rapidly progressive renal failure, who had MCL in the gastrointestinal tract and paraneoplastic membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, and whose renal dysfunction normalised after chemotherapy.

Unveiling the rare, interesting series of malignant mesenchymal tumors of the kidney in a regional cancer care institute in South India.

Malignant mesenchymal tumors of the kidney are rare, diagnostically challenging neoplasms with variable biological behaviors. Here, we present a series of five rare primary renal malignant mesenchymal tumors, comprising one case each of solitary fibrous tumor, synovial sarcoma, and pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma, and two cases of Ewing sarcoma. Accurate diagnosis depends on histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation, and further confirmation is made by molecular studies. Given their aggressive nature and poor prognosis, early recognition and ongoing documentation of such cases are cruc

Wilms' tumor with metastasis to the left testis.

Wilms' tumors account for the vast majority of renal neoplasms in infants and children. Common areas for metastases include the lung, liver, and contralateral kidney. Less common sites include the bone, skin, brain, and orbit. We report a case of Wilms' tumor in a 13-month-old boy who, after radical left nephrectomy, developed a left testicular mass that turned out to be metastatic Wilms' tumor. The epidemiology, case history, review of the literature, and possible etiology of this rare site of metastatic Wilms' tumor are discussed.

Donor Transmission of an Intravascular Large B-Cell Lymphoma in Multiorgan Transplantation: A Case Report From a Rare Pitfall in the Predonation Screening for Donor Disease.

The prevention of donor-transmitted diseases in solid organ transplantation depends on the thorough screening of donors while maintaining a high level of clinical suspicion. The evolution in these practices reduced the incidence of donor-transmitted tumors to minimal and unexpected events. Nevertheless, the recipients of these exceptional transmissions hold significant clinical consequences, challenging decisions, and poor outcomes. The intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is an extremely rare and aggressive tumor with almost exclusive intrasmall vessel growth. Its clinical and morphol

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the vulva: a case report and review of the literature.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) is an uncommon aggressive neoplasm which usually occurs in the kidney of children, but it has also been found in extrarenal sites. MRT arising in the vulva is extremely rare. Only four cases of MRT of the vulva have been reported in the English literature. We herein present another case. The diagnosis and management of vulva MRT are reviewed.

Metastatic Leiomyosarcoma Involving Bone and Kidney in an Adult Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus).

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a malignant neoplasm of smooth muscle cell origin, is relatively rare in birds. This study presents the occurrence of this tumour in a 2-year-old male budgerigar. The bird was brought to the Ashian Veterinary Hospital with complaints of swelling in the medial area of the left leg. Clinical examination and radiological imaging confirmed the presence of soft tissue swelling in the medial region of the left leg. Empirical antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy were used to distinguish infectious inflammation from the tumour mass. After 12 days, a clinical diagnosis of susp

Production of intestinal and other tumors by 1, 2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride in mice. I. A light and transmission electron microscopic study of colonic neoplasms.

Single or ten weekly subcutaneous injection(s) of 1, 2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride were administered separately to Swiss mice. The repeated application gave rise mainly to high incidences of tumors in the large intestine. These neoplasms occurred most frequently in the colorectal area and in cecum adjacent to ileum. Light microscopically, these lesions were classified as polypoid adenomas and adenocarcinomas. Most of the adenocarcinomas were highly invasive, although they metastasized rarely. The fine structure of the malignant cells exhibited features typical of columnar absorptive cell

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumour-mimicking retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma.

A young man in his 40s was evaluated in the emergency department for abdominal and right flank pain. A CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis showed a solid, well-circumscribed lesion measuring 7.1×8.1×5.4 cm, which was arising from the retroperitoneum and extending from the third portion of the duodenum towards the right kidney. A percutaneous core biopsy was obtained, demonstrating an atypical smooth muscle neoplasm suggestive of a low-grade leiomyosarcoma. The patient underwent surgery for an en-block resection of the mass and the final pathology confirmed a perivascular epithelioid cell neoplas

Norethisterone-Induced Liver Injury and a Short Survey Among Gynecologists.

Norethisterone, a commonly used oral contraceptive, and treatment for various gynecological disorders such as menorrhagia, abnormal uterine bleeding, and breast cancer, has been associated with multiple liver injuries. These injuries can manifest as hepatitis or cholestatic types of injury, benign neoplasms, peliosis hepatis, sinusoidal obstruction syndrome, and enlargement of existing hemangiomas. This report presents three cases in which liver enzyme levels were elevated due to norethisterone intake. Two of the cases were individuals undergoing evaluation as potential kidney donors in the ne

Kidney Carcinoma Ovarian Metastasis: Review of the Literature.

Ovarian metastasis is common with secondary tumors representing up to 15% of ovarian neoplasms. The malignancies most commonly involving the ovaries are carcinomas of the stomach, colon, breast, endocervix, endometrium, and lymphoma. Secondary ovarian involvement by kidney carcinoma occurs very rarely and is usually associated with widespread dissemination. We conducted a review of kidney carcinoma with ovarian metastasis in the literature using the keywords clear cell renal cell carcinoma, papillary renal cell carcinoma, chromophobe renal cell carcinoma collecting duct carcinoma, and ovarian

Magnetic resonance imaging in the complications of kidney transplantation.

Kidney transplantation is currently the treatment of choice in most patients with end-stage chronic renal failure owing to the excellent results in terms of both graft and patient survival. However, surgical complications are still very frequent. Although urological (stricture, urinary fistulas, vesico-ureteral reflux) and lymphatic complications (lymphocoele) have a high incidence, they only rarely lead to graft loss. By contrast, vascular complications (stenosis, arterial and venous thrombosis, arterio-venous fistulas, pseudoaneurysms) are relatively rare, but potentially serious and may aff

Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma arising in an ectopic kidney simulating a retroperitoneal dermoid cyst: a rare tumour presenting as a diagnostic dilemma.

Primary mucinous cystic neoplasms are rare tumours of the kidney, with a very few case reports in the literature. They arise from metaplasia of renal pelvic urothelium. We describe here a 45-year-old male who presented with pain in the abdomen and a lump in the left iliac fossa for two months. Ultrasound and CT scan showed a large, complex, heterogenous mass in the central abdomen and left iliac fossa, suggesting the possibility of dermoid cyst. Excision of the mass showed an enlarged multicystic kidney filled with mucin, destruction of renal parenchyma and a small viable area of grey white tu

Renal lymphoma: radiologic-pathologic correlation of 21 cases.

The radiologic findings in 21 cases of renal lymphoma were correlated with the gross and microscopic pathologic findings. The gross morphology and consequent radiographic images depend upon the mechanism of renal involvement (hematogenous or direct extension); the pattern of intrarenal growth (interstitial or expansile); the size, number, and distribution of lesions; and the presence of extension beyond the kidney. Initially, the lymphoma grows between nephrons that may continue to function and, because this interstitial proliferation preserves gross morphology, radiographic detection may be d
