Quality Indicator-Driven Six Sigma Scale Assessment of Extra-Analytical Phases in Clinical Chemistry Laboratory-Insights from a Tertiary Care Hospital.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the error rate in the analytical stage of laboratory testing has been drastically reduced due to automation, good-quality reagents, standardized assays, and increased participation of laboratories in proficiency testing programs. Nevertheless, high error rates in extra-analytical phase remains a critical vulnerability impacting diagnostic performance and patient safety. OBJECTIVE: The present observational study was designed to quantify error rates and evaluate efficiency of extra-analytical processes, using quality indicators on the Sigma metrics. METHODS: We ex

Plazomicin susceptibility profile in carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE): a laboratory-based cross-sectional study from a tertiary care hospital in North India.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) represent a major therapeutic challenge, particularly in high-resistance settings where metallo-β-lactamases and aminoglycoside resistance mechanisms may coexist. Plazomicin, a next-generation aminoglycoside designed to evade many aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes, may retain activity against selected CRE isolates; however, its utility in Indian settings remains uncertain. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of CRE isolates to plazomicin and compare its activity with conventional aminoglycosides, including amikacin, gentam

Trends in COVID-19-Attributable Hospitalizations Among Adults With Laboratory-Confirmed SARS-CoV-2-COVID-NET, June 2020 to September 2023.

BACKGROUND: Screening for SARS-CoV-2 infection among hospital admissions made interpretation of COVID-19 hospitalization data challenging as SARS-CoV-2-positive persons with mild or asymptomatic infection may be incorrectly identified as COVID-19-associated hospitalizations. The study objective is to estimate the proportion of hospitalizations likely attributable to COVID-19 among SARS-CoV-2-positive hospitalized patients. METHODS: A sample of laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2-positive hospitalizations from the COVID-19-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET) from June 2020

Comparison of Laboratory Confirmed Drugs in Acute Recreational Drug Toxicity Presentations to an Urban Hospital in London, UK, 2016/17 versus 2019/20.

INTRODUCTION: Novel Psychoactive Substance (NPS) use is increasingly prevalent and is often associated with severe acute recreational drug toxicity (ARDT). 258 UK deaths were attributed to NPS use in 2021. Confirmatory testing which identifies NPS is limited by expense and timeliness. We aimed to identify NPS and other recreational drugs in a sample of 1000 ARDT presentations to a central London hospital in 2019/20 and to compare these drugs to those identified from a previous cohort in 2016/2017. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 1000 serum samples from ARDT presentations to St Thomas' Hosp

The contribution of antinuclear antibodies in Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC): An experience from the immunology laboratory at University Hospital Center Hassan II, Fes, Morocco.

UNLABELLED: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic autoimmune cholestatic liver disease. If this disease is not treated, it might lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and its associated complications.1 Early recognition of this entity and immediate institution of therapy are the primary prognostic modifiers.2 Anti-nuclear autoantibodies can be used for diagnosis, particularly the anti-gp 210 and anti-Sp100 antibodies. Our aim in this study is to describe the epidemiology, clinical, biochemical, and immunological aspects of patients with PBC, thus, emphasizing the role of those antibodies. MET
