Rubella specific IgM tests carried out on pregnant women with history of rubella contact or rubella-like rash indicated the presence of rubella-IgM by the second week after contact, persistence to 3-4 weeks followed by a decline and non-detectability around 8-9 weeks and at delivery. Laboratory investigation of cases of rubella infection in infants and children, including clinically proven and suspected congenital rubella revealed distinct patterns of combinations of positivity and negativity of IgM and IgG antibodies. Three cases of persistence of rubella specific IgM antibodies with one even

Two common tissue sampling techniques--colposcopic biopsy and cervical scrape--and two common human papillomavirus (HPV) detection techniques--Southern blot and dot blot (SB and ViraPap [VP])--were compared to determine whether differences in these techniques alter correlations between "oncogenic" HPVs and cervical neoplasia. In 87 women with persistently abnormal Papanicolaou (Pap) smears, concurrent biopsy and scrape specimens contained HPV in 21 (24%) and contained no HPV in 26 (30%); 30 scrape specimens (34.5%) tested positive when the biopsy tested negative and 10 (11.5%) scrape specimens

OBJECTIVES: Indonesia is one of the dengue endemic countries. The criteria for diagnosing dengue infection are based on World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Chikungunya and Zika virus infections have also been reported sporadically in Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical features of patients with dengue in a hospital setting and investigate the potential for other arboviral infections in patients with fever.
METHODS: This case-control study was conducted at two hospitals in North Jakarta between August 2023 and May 2024. Patients admitted with 3 or more days of fever wi

BACKGROUND: Invasive mould infections (IMI) carry high morbidity and mortality. Conventional diagnostics-histopathology, culture and microscopy-rely on invasive sampling and lack sensitivity, particularly during early phases of infection. Rare and mixed mould infections are frequently diagnosed too late or missed.
OBJECTIVES: To provide a narrative review of recent innovations in diagnosing IMIs, highlighting advances, identifying areas where progress remains limited, and assessing gaps in current diagnostic algorithms to guide future directions.
SOURCES: We performed a literature search reg

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Hantavirus and leptospirosis infections are zoonotic diseases with similar clinical and laboratory findings. The aim of this study is to identify the distinguishing features of these two diseases, for which a definitive diagnosis can take a long time.
METHODS: Between September 2021 and June 2023, a total of 45 patients who were admitted to our hospital and were diagnosed with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or leptospirosis were retrospectively evaluated. Patients were compared in terms of demographic data, clinical, and laboratory parameters. The role of

Routine diagnostic laboratory results, e.g. numbers of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteraemias, have been used as health-care-associated infection quality indicators for decades. The English health-care-associated infection quality indicator system was one of the earliest in the world to mandate the collection and public reporting of such data and has been associated with a reduction of MRSA bacteraemias and Clostridium difficile infections but has shown mixed results for other infections. Diagnostic laboratory data vary greatly between hospitals depending not only on th

Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 are the main cause of genital ulcers worldwide. Although herpes simplex virus type 2 is the major cause of genital lesions, herpes simplex virus type 1 accounts for half of new cases in developed countries. Herpes simplex virus type 2 seroprevalence rises with sexual activity from adolescence through adulthood. Slovenian data in a high-risk population shows 16% seroprevalence of HSV-2. HSV-1 and HSV-2 DNA in genital swabs was detected in 19% and 20.7%, respectively. In most cases, genital herpes is asymptomatic. Primary genital infection with herpes simplex v

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major pathogen responsible for both hospital and community onset disease. Resistance to methicillin in S. aureus is mediated by PBP2a, a penicillin-binding protein with low affinity to beta-lactams, encoded by the mecA gene. Accurate susceptibility testing of S. aureus isolates and screening of patients for colonization with MRSA are important tools to limit the spread of this organism. This review focuses on the clinical significance of MRSA infections and new approaches for the laboratory diagnosis and epidemiologic typing of MRSA strai

Aelurostrongylus abstrusus parasitizes the respiratory tract and can heavily affect the breathing and general condition of cats. Experimental infections of six cats were initiated by intragastric administration with 100 or 800 third-stage larvae (L3) obtained from the terrestrial snail Helix aspersa. First-stage larvae were isolated from faecal samples after 35-41 days post infection (dpi) in five animals and until end of study (84 dpi) in two cats. Cough and respiratory sounds were observed starting from 28 to 41 dpi and dyspnoea and panting starting from 52 dpi. All cats had enlarged lymph n

Although Giardia duodenalis is considered a parasite of mammals, different genotypes have been identified as infecting several species of freshwater and marine fish in Australia. Establishment of G. duodenalis infection in common laboratory zebrafish (Danio rerio), could provide an excellent tool for a range of studies on Giardia. We conducted preliminary experiments to investigate this possibility. Zebrafish were inoculated with viable G. duodenalis cysts from two different Assemblages (A and D) using a modified oro-gastric tube. Direct microscopy and immunofluorescent antibody test were used

Since its initial description in the 1940s and eventual elucidation as a highly evolved pathogenic bacterium, Mycoplasma pneumoniae has come to be recognized as a worldwide cause of primary atypical pneumonia. Beyond its ability to cause severe lower respiratory illness and milder upper respiratory symptoms it has become apparent that a wide array of extrapulmonary infectious and postinfectious events may accompany the infections in humans caused by this organism. Autoimmune disorders and chronic diseases such as asthma and arthritis are increasingly being associated with this mycoplasma, whic

During a 3-year prospective laboratory-based study in Denmark from 1998 to 2001, all patients who were diagnosed with localised Fusobacterium necrophorum infections were registered with the purpose of describing the variety of localised infections caused by F. necrophorum, especially in the head. We found 267 patients, most of them previously healthy, with localised F. necrophorum infections in the head and neck. In children, F. necrophorum caused otitis media and solitary abscess formation in cervical lymphadenitis. In adolescents, F. necrophorum was found in 21% of peritonsillar abscesses. W

The last case of naturally acquired smallpox disease, caused by the orthopoxvirus variola virus (VARV), occurred in 1977, and the last laboratory-acquired case occurred in 1978. Smallpox was eradicated largely as the result of a worldwide vaccination campaign that used the related orthopoxvirus, vaccinia virus (VACV), as a live virus vaccine. Routine childhood vaccination for smallpox in the United States was terminated by 1972, but vaccination continues or has been reintroduced for specific groups, including laboratory workers who may be exposed to orthopoxviruses, members of the military, se

Hookworm infection is one of the most important parasitic infections of humans. About 740 million people are infected with Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus in the tropics and subtropics. Unlike most other human helminth infections, neither age nor exposure-related immunity develops in the majority of infected people. This review presents the contemporary knowledge concerning the immune response to this complex eukaryotic parasite, recent findings on the human cellular immune responses to hookworms, as well as mechanisms used by the parasite to modulate the immune response in its fa
