[Cutaneous larva migrans syndrome on a malformed foot (a case report)].

Cutaneous larva migrans syndrome is a subcutaneous dermatitis caused by hookworms' larvae, originating from animals in parasitic impasse in humans. Transcutaneous infestation is favored by contact with contaminated soil. We report the case of a 15-month-old child, native of Guinea - Bissau, suffering from cutaneous larva migrans syndrome on a malformed foot. This malformation in the form of a syndactyly, associated with a tumefaction of the foot cause a delay in the standing position. Besides, the fact that the child never wears shoes because of the sick foot is another factor contributing to …

Description of the larva of Epigomphus crepidus Kennedy, 1936 (Odonata: Gomphidae).

The larva of Epigomphus crepidus Kennedy is described and figured and compared with other described congeners. It is characterized by 3rd antennomere spindle-shaped, flattened dorso-ventrally, twice longer than its widest part; ventral pad of hypopharynx pentagonal; prementum subrectangular, with lateral margins slightly convex on apical 0.60; ligula very poorly developed, with a ventral row of nine short, truncate teeth on middle, and dorsal rows of short, stout piliform setae. Abdomen lacking dorsal protuberances, lateral spines on S7-9 divergent; sternites 3-8 divided into five plates, ster…

Bladder and liver involvement of visceral larva migrans may mimic malignancy.

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) syndrome is a clinical manifestation of systemic organ involvement by Toxocara species. VLM with involvement of the bladder and liver is a rare finding. A 62-year-old woman presented with diffuse bladder wall thickening and multiple liver masses with peripheral eosinophilia and urinary symptoms. We considered malignancy or eosinophilic cystitis through clinical manifestations and imaging findings. However, no suspicious malignant lesions were observed on cystoscopy and liver mass biopsy revealed the presence of eosinophilic necrotizing granuloma without malignant c…

Human botfly (Dermatobia hominis) larva in a child's scalp mimicking osteomyelitis.

Furuncular myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis is endemic throughout Central and South America. However, because of widespread travel, furuncular myiasis has become more common in North America. Misdiagnosis and mismanagement can occur owing to limited awareness of the condition outside endemic areas. We report a case of furuncular myiasis in an immigrant from El Salvador with magnetic resonance imaging findings. The case is unique because neuroimaging was obtained upon the clinical suspicion of calvarial osteomyelitis. Parasitic infestation should be included in the differential diagnosis of

A rare case of cutaneous larva migrans due to Gnathostoma sp.

A 28-year-old lady presented with recurrent erythematous skin lesions in different parts of the body for 3 months. There were several episodes of worm coming out of the lesions. Examination of the worms in the parasitology laboratory revealed it to be a larva of Gnathostoma sp. She was advised treatment with Albendazole for 21 days, and there was no recurrence of lesions.

Larva Migration and Eosinophilia in Mice Experimentally Infected With Gnathostoma spinigerum.

BACKGROUND: Gnathostoma spinigerum causes larva migran in human which is endemic in Southeast Asia. Information regarding larva migration is limited. In this study, we investigated the parasite migration by recovery of worms from the whole body of mouse after oral infection with advanced third stage larvae (AL3). The percentage of blood eosinophils was examined in parallel. METHODS: Mice were orally infected with AL3 and histological study of organs was investigated in order to study the migration of AL3, along with blood eosinophilia. RESULTS: At 1 hr post infection (PI), the larvae remaine…

AIRP best cases in radiologic-pathologic correlation: human coenurosis (Taenia Larva).

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immunologically mediated lung disease due to the repetitive inhalation of antigens. Most new cases arise from residential exposures, notably to birds, and are thus more difficult to recognise. The present authors report a 59-yr-old male who complained of dyspnoea and cough while being treated with amiodarone. Pulmonary function tests revealed restriction and obstruction with low diffusing lung capacity for carbon monoxide and partial pressure of oxygen. A high-resolution computed tomography chest scan and bronchoalveolar lavage showed diffuse bilateral g

Hookworms of dogs and cats as agents of cutaneous larva migrans.

Dogs and cats are hosts to hookworms that may cause zoonotic disease, most notably, cutaneous larva migrans. Ancylostoma braziliense is most often implicated in dermatological lesions, and Ancylostoma caninum has been associated with eosinophilic enteritis and suggested as a possible cause of diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis in humans. Other manifestations include eosinophilic pneumonitis, localized myositis, folliculitis, erythema multiforme, or ophthalmological manifestations. Ancylostoma eggs are morphologically indistinguishable, which complicates epidemiological studies. Surveys…

Isolation of fatty acids with anticancer activity from Protaetia brevitarsis larva.

In this study, biologically active compounds were isolated from Protaetia brevitarsis larva (PBL) by dichloromethane extraction. The dichloromethane extract from PBL was highly cytotoxic to various cancer cells. From a silica gel column chromatograpy of this extract, we obtained four fractions (F-2, F-4, F-5 and F-7) having apoptosis-inducing activity. These fractions induced DNA ladder and caspase-3 activation during apoptosis in colon 26 tumor cells. In 1H and 13C NMR and mass spectral analysis of the fraction F-2 showing the highest apoptosis-inducing activity, we found that the fraction wa…

[Recognition by immunoelectroblotting of antigens from Taenia solium and its larva].

Golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) were infected with cysticerci of Taenia solium. Groups of three were bled and killed weekly up to 15 weeks recording the number of implanted adults in the small intestine. A longitudinal study on the antibody response against adult and larvae Ags was carried out, as well as against Ags of H. nana. By ELISA, antibodies against larvae and adult Ags of T. solium were detected since the first week, showing a peak at 3 and 5 weeks respectively. At 14 weeks antibodies levels were very low, which is the time when the parasite is eliminated. The response against A…

Intracerebral myiasis from Hypoderma bovis larva in a child. Case report.

Cerebral myiasis with a 10-day history of convulsions due to an intracerebral hematoma caused by a Hypoderma bovis larva is reported in an 8-year-old child. Computerized tomography (CT) showed the hematoma in a right parieto-occipital location. The H. bovis larva and the extensive intracerebral hematoma were discovered during surgery. Among human parasitoses, cerebral myiasis is rare: a review of the literature revealed only two reports, one published in 1969 and one in 1980. This is the first case that has been diagnosed as cerebral myiasis with exact identification of the Hypoderma bovis lar…

Application of biotechnology in the identification of filarial larva in mosquitoes.

Current methods for detecting and identifying filariae in mosquitoes are laborious and time consuming. With today's technology, we can reasonably expect development of rapid, sensitive and specific assays for detecting and identifying filariae in naturally infected mosquito populations. Progress in developing such assays is reviewed.
