Incidence of Ascaris suum-specific antibodies in Austrian patients with suspected larva migrans visceralis (VLM) syndrome.

The pig roundworm, Ascaris suum, is commonly found in domestic pigs all over the world. The transmission to humans takes place by ingestion of infective A. suum eggs present in soil because pig manure is widely used as fertilizer. The possible role of A. suum in the human visceral larva migrans (VLM) syndrome has been discussed controversially during past decades, even though various case reports, particularly from Japan document pulmonal, hepatic and even cerebral symptoms caused by migrating A. suum larvae after ingestion of infected row meat (liver) or contaminated vegetables. We examined 4…

Löffler syndrome caused by extensive cutaneous larva migrans: a case report and review of the literature.

In rare cases, cutaneous larva migrans may be complicated by Löffler syndrome. This syndrome is thought to result from a type I hypersensitivity reaction related to the pulmonary larval migration phase of various parasites. It is characterized by migratory pulmonary eosinophilic infiltrates and peripheral eosinophilia, with malaise, fever, and cough. Our patient was successfully treated with ivermectin, a corticosteroid cream, and inhalation medication in an early phase, which prevented complications. We present the details of this case and review the literature.

Prevalence and risk factors of hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans in a rural community in Brazil.

The epidemiology of hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM) in endemic communities is not well understood. To describe the prevalence of HrCLM and to identify environmental and behavioural risk factors for the infestation, two cross-sectional surveys were conducted in a small village in an endemic area of north-eastern Brazil - one in the rainy season and the other in the dry season. The members of each household were examined clinically for the presence of HrCLM, and information on possible risk factors was collected. HrCLM, which was diagnosed in 45 individuals in the rainy-season s…

Hepatic visceral larva migrans: evolution of the lesion, diagnosis, and role of high-dose albendazole therapy.

An unusual presentation of hepatic involvement of visceral larva migrans is described. A 45-yr-old male presented with fever, pain in the right upper quadrant, and persistent eosinophilia. Ultrasound initially detected a solitary hypoechoic area in the right lobe of the liver which rapidly progressed to multiple lesions with peripheral hyperechoic lesions. Aspiration from the lesion revealed Charcot-Leyden crystals and sheets of eosinophils. Serology for Toxocara canis was strongly positive. Prolonged and high-dose albendazole therapy, in combination with antibiotics, was required to treat the…

Visceral larva migrans: Immunoglobulins, precipitating antibodies and detection of IgG and IgM antibodies against Ascaris antigen.

Serum samples from ten children with visceral larva migrans were evaluated by analysis of: immunoglobulin concentrations, precipitin reactions against Toxocara and Ascaris antigens and blood group substances, and IgM and IgG activity against Ascaris antigen by radioimmunoassay (RIA). The elevated concentrations of serum IgE and IgG and the positive precipitin reactions which occurred in some cases are an aid in diagnosis but were not consistently present. Serum IgM concentrations were elevated in all cases. IgM or IgG antibodies against Ascaris suum antigen were detected in all cases by a soli…

Neuropathological observation of rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) affected with raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris procyonis) larva migrans in Japan.

Larvae of the raccoon roundworm, Baylisascaris procyonis (B. procyonis) are a known cause of cerebrospinal larva migrans in animals and humans. The present paper described details of the central nervous lesion in the rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) affected with B. procyonis larva migrans in Japan. Clinically affected animals showed neurological signs including circling, torticollis, tremor of head, or ataxic gait. The most characteristic pathological alterations were large malacic lesions associated with an activated astroglial proliferation which was seen at the corpus medullare in the cereb…

Serological evidence of toxocariasis in patients from Spain with a clinical suspicion of visceral larva migrans.

Sera from patients with clinical characteristics of toxocariasis were assayed using the ELISA method and larval excretory-secretory antigen. Four hundred and seven samples of Toxocara serology were received at the laboratory of Ciudad Sanitaria Juan Canalejo Hospital of Corunna, Spain, from 1984 to 1989. Of these, 30 were from adults, 332 from children and 45 from patients of unknown age, resulting in Toxocara seroprevalences of 23.3%, 32.8% and 17.7% respectively. The reasons for these serological differences in the rural and urban areas of Galicia, Spain are discussed.

[Larva migrans visceralis--occurrence of Toxocara canis in dogs in the East German district of Cottbus].

Larvae of the nematode genus Toxocara are the main causative agents of the L.m.v. syndrom. 5,002 dogs from the Cottbus district aged between 2 and 36 months were examined. 994 animals (19.9%) were found to be infected with Toxocara canis. Dogs from a rural area have a higher infection rate (25.6%) than dogs from an urban area (15.2%). The relatively high infection rate of dogs, high egg-production and the tenacity of the development stages are factors dangerous to human health.

Visceral larva migrans. A review and reassessment indicating two forms of clinical expression: visceral and ocular.

Visceral larva migrans is a disease in which the larvae of animal parasites invade human tissues but do not complete their life cycles. The most frequent cause of this illness in children is the dog roundworm, Toxocara canis. A review of the literature, as well as our clinical experience, indicates that there are two forms of clinical expression: one, visceral, and the other, ocular. In general the clinical and laboratory abnormalities (hepatomegaly, recurrent pneumonia, eosinophilia, and hyperglobulinemia) usually associated with visceral disease are absent in children with ocular abnormaliti…

Alterations of plasma circulating microRNAs in BALB/c mice with Toxocara canis visceral and cerebral larva migrans.

BACKGROUND: Human toxocariasis is a neglected parasitic disease characterised by the syndromes visceral, cerebral, and ocular larva migrans. This disease is caused by the migrating larvae of Toxocara roundworms from dogs and cats, affecting 1.4 billion people globally. Via extracellular vesicles (EVs), microRNAs have been demonstrated to play roles in host-parasite interactions and proposed as circulating biomarkers for the diagnosis and follow-up of parasitic diseases. METHODS: Small RNA-seq was conducted to identify miRNAs in the infective larvae of T. canis and plasma EV-containing prepara…

Cutaneous larva migrans, a neglected tropical disease of skin, with severe secondary eczematization at an unusual location.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM), commonly referred to as creeping eruption, is an infectious condition caused by various types of hookworms. It primarily affects the superficial layers of the skin owing to the absence of hyaluronidases and proteases. Typically, the distal lower extremities are the most commonly affected areas. The presence of distinctive lesions characterized by erythematous, winding, or serpentine tracks, slightly elevated from the skin surface, is indicative of the condition. Diagnosis primarily relies on clinical observation. Dermoscopy reveals multiple segmented yellowish-li…

Consideration of Diagnostic Methods for Cutaneous Larva Migrans in the Sole of an 8-Year-Old Boy.

An 8-year-old boy developed serpiginous erythema on the soles of his feet and was diagnosed with cutaneous larva migrans (CLM). Following treatment with ivermectin, the erythema improved within 7 days, but it recurred 14 days later, requiring a second dose for complete resolution. Ultrasound and MRI did not reveal any parasites, but fluctuations in eosinophils, IgE and IgA levels were observed during treatment. This case highlights the importance of combining multiple diagnostic methods to evaluate treatment effectiveness.

Sudden emergence and spread of cutaneous larva migrans in Sudan: A case series calls for urgent actions.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a self-limiting dermatosis parasitic disease that is caused by zoonotic hookworm mainly infects cats, dogs, and accidentally humans. The disease affects hosts through the invasion and the migration of the hookworm larva into top layers of the skin. The disease occurs in tropical and subtropical regions; where people commonly are infected when sitting or barefoot walking on places contaminated with feces of infected cats or dogs. Due to self-limiting nature of the disease, the exact burden and prevalence are commonly underestimated. In this communication, we inv…

Presence of Toxocara canis eggs on the hair of dogs: a risk factor for Visceral Larva Migrans.

The close contact between dogs and humans poses a high risk of exposure to Toxocara canis eggs, which can lead to Visceral Larva Migrans (VLM) syndrome. The objective of this study was to investigate the existence of these nematode eggs on the hair of the perianal region in stray and owned dogs. Samples of hair from 104 dogs of different ages were collected: 25 (24%) were positive for T. canis eggs, with mean of 614.8 eggs per gram of hair. Puppies were responsible for 99% of the total number of eggs. The ages of the animal and hair length were factors that influenced the intensity of the obse…

Inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase in murine visceral larva migrans: effects on lung and liver damage.

The roles of nitric oxide production and oxidative process were studied in mice infected with Toxocara canis and treated with aminoguanidine which is a specific inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Relations of nitric oxide synthase inhibition and tissue pathology were assessed by biochemical, histological and immunohistochemical methods. In experiments, Balb/c albino mice were inoculated with T. canis eggs either with or without aminoguanidine treatment or alone, at 24th, 48th hours and on 7th days. LPx and SOD values in liver tissue and plasma were measured. Liver and lung ti

Cutaneous Larva Migrans Acquired in a Tropical Area of Ecuador: Diagnostic Delay, Clinical Evolution, and Recognition Challenges.

Cutaneous Larva Migrans (CLM) is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by zoonotic Ancylostomatidae larvae, mainly Ancylostoma braziliense and Ancylostoma caninum, which infect dogs and cats. Humans are accidental hosts, acquiring infection when L3 larvae in contaminated soil penetrate the skin, producing serpiginous, pruritic lesions. We report a 24-year-old female from Quito, Ecuador, who developed a pruritic lesion on her right foot nine days after walking barefoot on wet, potentially fecally contaminated sand at Atacames Beach. Initial self-treatment with benzyl benzoate and herbal was…
