Assessing critical temperature dose areas in the kidney by magnetic resonance imaging thermometry in an ex vivo Holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy model.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess critical temperature areas in the kidney parenchyma using magnetic resonance thermometry (MRT) in an ex vivo Holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy model. METHODS: Thermal effects of Ho:YAG laser irradiation of 14 W and 30 W were investigated in the calyx and renal pelvis of an ex vivo kidney with different laser application times (tL) followed by a delay time (tD) of tL/tD = 5/5 s, 5/10 s, 10/5 s, 10/10 s, and 20/0 s, with irrigation rates of 10, 30, 50, 70, and 100 ml/min. Using MRT, the size of the area was determined in which the thermal dose as measured by the Cumulati

Assessing the Outcomes of Focused Heating of the Skin by a Long-Pulsed 1064 nm Laser with an Integrated Scanner, Infrared Thermal Guidance, and Optical Coherence Tomography.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Long-term benefits can be predicted by the incorporation of more intelligent systems in lasers and other devices. Such systems can produce more reliable zones of thermal injury when used in association with non-invasive monitoring and precise laser energy delivery. The more classical endpoint of tumor destruction with radiofrequency or long-pulsed (LP) 1064 nm laser is the non-specific appearance of tissue graying and tissue contraction. Herein we discuss combining non-invasive LP 1064 nm Nd:YAG treatment with the assistance of optical coherence tomography

Treatment of alopecia areata with 2940-nm fractional erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser.

Various laser therapies have been used for the treatment of alopecia areata (AA). Enhanced hair regrowth was reported with the use of ablative fractional 2940-nm erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser in a murine model. However, clinical effectiveness of fractional Er:YAG laser for hair disorders has not been investigated in human studies. The aim of our study was to assess the effectiveness of 2940-nm fractional Er:YAG laser in the treatment of chronic AA that is unresponsive to conventional therapies. Twenty-five AA patients underwent three sessions, each 4 to 6 weeks apart, of fracti

Gingival melanin depigmentation by Er:YAG laser: A literature review.

Laser ablation is recently suggested as a most effective and reliable technique for depigmentation of melanin hyperpigmented gingiva. To date, different lasers have been used for gingival depigmentation (CO2, diode, Nd:YAG, Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers). The use of Er:YAG laser for depigmentation of melanin hyperpigmented gingiva has gained increasing importance in recent years. The purpose of this study was to report removal of gingival melanin pigmentation using an Er:YAG laser in a literature review. The main outcomes, such as improvement of signs (clinical parameters of bleeding, erythema,

Recall erythema phenomenon following Er:YAG laser treatment: two case studies and literature review.

Recall erythema is a phenomenon occurring when an area of epidermis treated with laser is later exposed to a trigger, most often sunlight or hot water, causing erythema in the zone of laser treatment after post-treatment erythema has already resolved. Radiation recall dermatitis is a more specific subtype of recall erythema in which an area treated with radiation is subjected to another exposure causing erythema in the area of previous radiation. Cases of recall dermatitis after laser treatment are extremely rare and have only been reported with diode neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet la

Stone/tissue differentiation for holmium laser lithotripsy using autofluorescence.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Holmium laser lithotripsy is a safe and effective method to disintegrate urinary stones of all compositions in an endoscopic procedure. However, handling and safety could be improved by a real-time feedback system permanently monitoring the position of the treatment fiber. The laser is fired only when the fiber is identified as being placed in front of stone. This work evaluates the potential of fluorescence detection with an excitation wavelength of 532 nm for this purpose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A fiber-based fluorescence measurement was set-up to acquire autofluo

Fractional 1,550 nm Ytterbium/Erbium fiber laser in the treatment of lichen amyloidosis: clinical and histological study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lichen amyloidosis is characterized by amyloid deposition in the papillary dermis, presenting clinically with intensely pruritic hyperkeratotic papules. Various treatment modalities have been used but the results are generally unsatisfactory. Several studies show that non-ablative fractional lasers can be used to treat depositional diseases due to their capability of inducing transepidermal elimination of the dermal content. To investigate the efficacy and safety of a non-ablative fractional 1,550 nm Yttrium/Erbium fiber laser for the treatment of lichen amyloidosis.

Comparison of KTP, Thulium, and CO2 laser in stapedotomy using specialized visualization techniques: thermal effects.

High-speed thermal imaging enables visualization of heating of the vestibule during laser-assisted stapedotomy, comparing KTP, CO2, and Thulium laser light. Perforation of the stapes footplate with laser bears the risk of heating of the inner ear fluids. The amount of heating depends on absorption of the laser light and subsequent tissue ablation. The ablation of the footplate is driven by strong water absorption for the CO2 and Thulium laser. For the KTP laser wavelength, ablation is driven by carbonization of the footplate and it might penetrate deep into the inner ear without absorption in

Coagulation of a giant hemangioma in glans penis with holmium laser.

A 21-year-old man presented with an enlarged giant hemangioma on glans penis which also causes an erectile dysfunction (ED) that partially responded to the intracavernous injection stimulation test. Although the findings in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated a glandular hemangioma, penile colored Doppler ultrasound revealed an invaded cavernausal hemangioma to the glans. Surgical excision was avoided according to the broad extension of the gland lesion. Holmium laser coagulation was applied to the lesion due to the cosmetically concerns. However, the cosmetic results after holmium lase

The effect of surface roughness on the Er:YAG laser-induced photoacoustic removal of bacteria in zero-gap periodontal/peri-implant pocket model.

Effective biofilm removal from periodontal and peri-implant pockets remains a challenge due to constrained geometry and limited access. This study investigates a novel phenomenon of distant-field cleaning utilizing Er:YAG laser treatment, where removal of bacteria occurs in areas without previously observed cavitation under high-speed imaging. To understand this effect, we developed a transparent zero-gap model simulating a tooth or implant and surrounding soft tissue. We systematically examined the impact of laser fiber insertion depth, cavitation bubble dynamics, the stiffness and roughness
