Application of eccentric exercise on an Australian Rules football player with recurrent hamstring injuries.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To assess an eccentric based intervention on an Australian Football player with recurrent hamstring injuries. CASE DESCRIPTION: The athlete attempted several conventional rehabilitation programs in the past (e.g. physical therapy, manual therapy, acupuncture, active release, medial gluteal strengthening) with no sustained progress in regards to pain, soreness, or return to sport. OUTCOMES: After the first three phases of the intervention (i.e. nine weeks), the optimum angle of peak torque during knee flexion decreased from 37.3 to 23.9 degrees in the in

Is Cadence Related to Leg Length and Load Rate?

BACKGROUND: Increasing cadence is often recommended to reduce load rate and to lower injury risk. However, habitual cadence was recently shown to be unrelated to load rate. Cadence is likely influenced by leg length. If so, then cadence may be related to load rate when it is normalized to leg length. OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between cadence and leg length in both injured and uninjured runners with a rearfoot strike pattern. We hypothesized that increased leg length would be associated with lower cadence. We also evaluated the relationship between cadence normalized to leg lengt

[Overuse injury syndromes of the calf and foot] ].

The lower leg, foot and ankle form a functional unit of the locomotor system with an important static and dynamic function. Injury or loss of function of any muscle group of the lower leg and the foot influences normal gait or impedes standing. Increased or frequent loads on the muscle group may lead to pain syndromes known as overuse syndromes or overuse injuries. Athletes and certain professions involving standing or walking for a long time are especially susceptible to increased muscle strains. This article describes and clarifies the causes and the development of the pain syndromes in the

Biomechanical differences across pubertal maturation stages and sexes in a single-leg drop-land and a single-leg drop-land-and-cut task.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries account for 45% of internal knee injuries, often having prolonged recovery and substantial care costs. Higher non-contact ACL injury rates have been reported in post-pubertal females compared with males and pre-pubertal individuals, which is potentially linked with biomechanical changes associated with musculoskeletal and neuromuscular development. Up to 80% of non-contact ACL injuries occur during single-leg landing or cutting; hence, a single-leg drop-land and single-leg drop-land-and-cut task were used to investigate the effect of sex and maturation

Risk of acute and overuse injuries in youth elite soccer players: Body size and growth matter.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated anthropometric measures and growth as risk factors for overuse and acute injuries in younger (U10-U12) and older (U13-U15) elite level soccer players. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Height, weight, and sitting height were measured at the start and the end of the 2016-2017 competitive season and growth velocities were calculated. Throughout the season, injuries were registered continuously by the (para-)medical staff of the included clubs. We analyzed the injury risk using multilevel Poisson regression models, accounting for club and team cluste

Athletes' leg pains.

The frequency and nature of exertion pains of the leg in athletes were studied in 2,750 cases of overuse injuries treated at the Sports Clinic of the Deaconess Institute of Oulu, Finland, during the years 1972-1977. 465 cases of exertion pain (18%) were located in the shin. The medial tibial syndrome was the most common overuse injury among these athletes, comprising 9.5% of all exertion injuries and 60% of the leg exertion pains. Together with stress fracture of the tibia, the second most common exertion pain of the leg, it accounted for 75% of the total leg pains. There are certain difficult

Lower extremity injuries in U.S. national fencing team members and U.S. fencing Olympians.

INTRODUCTION: Fencing is growing rapidly in popularity and competitiveness with fencers beginning at a younger age and competing in more tournaments. Even though fencing has a low risk of time-loss injury, fencers are inevitably going to experience injuries if proper athletic training and prevention does not occur. We aim to describe and compare the lower extremity injuries experienced by fencers that have trained at the highest level in the sport. We hypothesized that athletes who fenced longer would suffer more knee and hip injuries and report lower IKDC and HOS scores. METHODS: This is an

Wound-dependent leg amputations to combat infections in an ant society.

Open wounds pose major infection and mortality risks in animals.1,2 To reduce these risks, many animal species apply antimicrobial compounds on their wounds.1,2,3,4 Ant societies use antimicrobial secretions from the metapleural gland to combat pathogens,5,6,7,8,9,10 but this gland has been lost over evolutionary time in several genera, including Camponotus.11 To understand how infected wounds are handled without the use of antimicrobial secretions from the metapleural gland, we conducted behavioral and microbiological experiments in Camponotus floridanus. When we experimentally injured a work

Superficial peroneal nerve schwannoma presenting as lumbar radicular syndrome in a non-competitive runner.

INTRODUCTION: Running is one of the most common sports practices in the world due to the beneficial impact on the health, despite the relatively high risk of getting injuries. In fact, running is one of the most common sports capable to induce overuse injuries of the lower back and leg. In previous studies, the symptoms in the lower limb have been attributed to lumbosacral degenerative pathology. When the symptoms are unclear, they must be studied with great attention by carrying out an accurate process of screening and differential diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 42-year-old non-competit

Hair straightener burns in children: An experimental study originating from 2 cases.

Burns in children are a topic of fundamental importance in the context of the differential diagnosis between accidental events and abuse. In this context, the present study arose from two cases of children with second-degree burns (in case 1 on the leg, in case 2 on the foot) caused by contact with the hot surfaces of a hair straightener, which were reported as accidental events but trough the complete medico-legal investigation later turned out to be abusive burns. With an experimental set on pig skin and by simulating the two anatomical districts (leg and foot), using the same type of hair s

The influence of passenger car front shape on pedestrian injury risk observed from German in-depth accident data.

Quantified relationships between passenger car front shape and pedestrian injury risk derived from accident data are sparse, especially considering the significant recent changes in car front design. The purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate the detailed effects of passenger car front shape on injury risk to a pedestrian's head, thorax, pelvis and leg in the event of a vehicle pedestrian impact. Firstly, an accident sample of 594 pedestrian cases captured during 2000-2015 from the German In-Depth Accident Study (GIDAS) database was employed. Multicollinearity diagnostic statistics

Latissimus Dorsi and Teres Major Tendon Avulsions in Cricketers: A Case Series and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Acute latissimus dorsi tendon injuries are uncommon, having not previously been described in cricketers. The leg spinner's stock ball bowling technique and the fast bowler's back-of-the-hand slow ball, which is used much more widely in T20 cricket, produce a significant eccentric contraction load on the latissimus dorsi muscle. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective review of a case series of acute latissimus dorsi tendon injuries in 3 elite cricketers (2 fast bowlers and a leg-spin bowler). We compare the outcomes using patient-rated scales and objective strength testing. Two patients un

[Traumatic hemipelvectomy].

With an incidence of only 0.6% of all pelvic injuries, traumatic hemipelvectomy is a rare event. It is defined as open or closed avulsion of one hemipelvis with occlusion or disruption of the main vessels and lengthening or disruption of the nerves, often complicated by urogenital or anorectal injuries. The mechanism of injury in this case is a typical one with extreme abduction and external rotation of the leg, causing sacroiliac joint disruption and symphysis separation. Two other mechanisms described are avulsion when the leg becomes entangled in a piece of machinery or a massive crushing a

Alpine ski injuries and their prevention.

Alpine skiing is a popular sport with significant risk of injury. Since the 1970s, injury rates have dropped from approximately 5 to 8 per 1000 skier-days to about 2 to 3 per 1000 skier-days. The nature of the injuries has also been transformed over the same period. Lower leg injuries are becoming less common while the incidence of knee sprains and upper extremity injuries is becoming more common. Much of this change can be attributed to advancements in binding technology, which effectively reduces lower leg injury, but does not adequately address the issue of knee sprains. Along with design, …
