Intracapsular lens removal in a Przewalski's wild horse (Equus caballus przewalskii).

A 11.5-yr-old female Przewalski's wild horse (Equus caballus przewalskii) presented for unilateral blepharitis and drainage from the left eye. The left cornea was not ulcerated, and intraocular evaluation was hampered by severe corneal edema. The left eye appeared to respond positively to treatment with anti-inflammatories and a topical mydriatic agent. During the ensuing 2 yr, there were minor episodes of epiphora from the left eye. The discharge then increased, and a luxated lens was noted during an examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist as part of the preshipment examination. Initially

Suture fixation of an intraocular lens combined with pars plana vitrectomy and gas tamponade.

We describe suturing an intraocular lens (IOL) after pars plana lensectomy and vitrectomy combined with gas tamponade in 4 patients with vitreoretinal disease and subluxated lenses that could not be managed with capsular tension rings. The IOL haptics were sutured before the fluid-gas exchange in a horizontal (case 1), oblique (cases 2 and 4), and vertical (case 3) manner. In a case of unavoidable horizontal fixation due to limited scleral space, the upper part of the IOL tilted anteriorly postoperatively because of the enhanced effect of the gas bubble. A peripheral anterior iris synechia als

Capsular hook-assisted implantation of modified capsular tension ring.

A 16-year-old boy presented with decrease of vision over a period of 2 years. On examination, he was diagnosed to have microspherophakia with lenticular myopia with secondary glaucoma in both eyes. He was treated by lens aspiration and two-point capsular support using a modified capsular tension ring (M-CTR) and capsular tension segment (CTS) sutured to the sclera along with implantation of a foldable intraocular lens inside the bag. Lens aspiration was performed without artificial capsular hook support of the bag, as the lens was soft and vitreous was formed. However, M-CTR rotation into the

Linguatula serrata in the anterior chamber of the eye.

We report a case of intraocular Linguatula in healthy young female who presented with a history of trivial trauma, dislocated lens, inflammation and secondary glaucoma. A mobile worm was seen in the anterior chamber. Pars plana lensectomy and vitrectomy was planned to remove both the cataractous lens and the parasite during which the worm disappeared from view but was later recovered from the cassette fluid. It was identified as the nymphal form of Linguatula serrata (tongue worm).

[Phacogenic uveitis with luxation of of Soemmering's ring formation in the vitreous body 63 years after cataract surgery].

BACKGROUND: After extracapsular cataract extraction, the remaining epithelial cells near to the equator may lead to the formation of a Soemmerings ring. Only 4 cases of dislocation of the ring in the vitreous are reported in the literature. A spontaneous dislocation associated with a phacolytic uveitis has not been described before. HISTORY AND SIGNS: In 1999 a 68-year-old man attended our clinic with a vision loss from 0.3 to hand movements in his left eye. For some years his right eye had been blind after unsuccessful retinal detachment surgery. In his left eye conjunctival inflammation, an

Marfan syndrome. What you need to know.

Marfan syndrome is a heritable disorder of the connective tissue. The major abnormalities occur in the ocular, skeletal, and cardiovascular systems, with variable expression in different patients. Most common are dislocated lens, which may or may not affect visual acuity, arachnodactyly, and mitral valve prolapse and aortic root dilatation. Cardiovascular complications cause about 90% of the excess early mortality seen with the syndrome. With proper management, including annual examination, some of the problems associated with these abnormalities may be avoided. The biochemical explanation for

[Spontaneous bilateral lens luxation].

Spontaneous luxation of lens is a rare ocular disease. There are three forms: hereditary, great myopia and senile cataract. The authors report on a senile cataract case: the posterior luxation in the second eye occurs three months after the first. After temporary intraocular pressure elevation, there are no complications 8 years later.

Familial simple ectopia lentis: a case study.

Hereditary simple ectopia lentis affected nine patients in three generations of a family. Inheritance appeared to be autosomal dominant. Examination of 12 family members, employing body proportion measurements, chest x-ray, echocardiogram, and urinary cystine or blood methionine levels, revealed no evidence of any systemic disease. In all cases except two, lenses were bilaterally and superiorly dislocated. The degree of dislocation varied considerably among those affected, causing no visual disturbance in some and severely limiting visual acuity in others. Visual deficits were greatest in pati

Scheimpflug imaging of bilateral foldable in-the-bag intraocular lens implantation assisted by a scleral-sutured capsular tension ring in Marfan's syndrome.

A 35-year-old white man with bilateral high myopia, astigmatism, subluxated crystalline lenses, and incipient cataract had phacoemulsification and implantation of a hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) (Alcon MA60BM) in both eyes. The subluxated capsular bag was stabilized and recentered using a scleral-fixated capsular tension ring (CTR) (type 1L, Morcher). Measured with Scheimpflug photography, the capsular bag and IOL were in a stable intraocular position during the 18-month follow-up. There were no major changes in refraction. Despite the sharp-edged IOL design, both eyes had posteri

Pars plana technique for removal of congenital subluxated lenses in young patients.

Lensectomy with the pars plana technique was performed in 16 eyes of 11 patients (2 female, 9 male) with congenital subluxated lenses. Lens subluxation was associated with homocystinuria in 2 patients, Marfan's syndrome in 4, congenital simple ectopia lentis in 2 and without any known heredity in 3 patients. The reason for removal was in all eyes optical disturbances. Five patients were operated on both eyes. All lenses were removed with the Kløti Vitreous Stripper through the pars plana. No complications occurred. Retinal detachment was present pre-operatively in both eyes in one patient with…

Rapidly progressive bilateral lens abnormalities following cataract surgery in a highly myopic patient.

BACKGROUND: Axial high myopia (AHM) combined with complicated cataract elevates cataract surgery risks, and capsular contraction syndrome (CCS) is a rare postoperative complication with high myopia as a high-risk factor. Nevertheless, the simultaneous occurrence of postoperative CCS in one eye and spontaneous complete crystalline lens dislocation in the contralateral unoperated eye has not previously been reported in the AHM population. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman with long-standing high myopia and bilateral nuclear cataract underwent right eye cataract surgery. The right eye devel
