Prevalence of body lice in elementary school students in three Ethiopian towns at different altitudes.

A survey of body lice in three different altitudinal zones of Ethiopia was conducted. The survey population consisted of primary school children of both sexes ranging in age from 6-25 years. The areas of study were Gambela, Kemise and Debre-Berhan. Only 33.2% of the school children were found to be free from infestation and the rest, 66.8%, harboured body lice ranging in number of 1 to 598. The prevalence in Debre-Berhan (76.2%) was found to be significantly higher (p less than 0.001) than in Gambela (61.4%) and Kemise (62.6%). Similarly the density of lice was higher (P less than 0.001) among

The Prevalence of Pediculosis in Southern Iran From 2016 to 2021.

INTRODUCTION: One important measure of community and personal hygiene is the prevalence of lice. Healthcare providers and strategists must analyze this illness across several groups if they are to create sensible plans and services for its decrease. The objective of this study was to find the prevalence of head lice in Iranian endemic regions. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, all patients referred to healthcare centers affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences from 2016 to 2021 who were diagnosed with head lice were included. Those confirmed with head lice wer

Some clinical features of pediculosis among school children.

Pediculosis is one of the most conspicuous and important type of contagious disease among school children. Lice infestation is always accompanied with different clinical manifestations. Thirty lousy school children were clinically examined. The common manifestation was pruritus with or without lymphadenopathy. The least common manifestation was erythema. Other manifestations as excoriation, bite reaction, impetigo contagiosa, crusts behind ears. Conjunctivitis and psoriasis were also seen. It was concluded that school children are the group at high risk for lice infestation.

Salmon lice survive the straight shooter: A commercial scale sea cage trial of laser delousing.

Ectoparasitic salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestations are costly for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farmers in Norway. As a result, there is a strong desire for solutions to prevent and control infestations, and new technologies are typically developed and commercialised rapidly, without rigorous validation. Here, we tested the efficacy of a new commercially available control measure-delousing by underwater lasers-using a replicated design at full commercial scale. Laser delousing was used in combination with a preventive method (snorkel cages), with laser nodes deployed in 3 of the

Skin problems and parasites in children: 3--Head lice.

Head lice are common in children, occur occasionally in women and are rare in men. All social classes are affected. Treatment should be reserved for genuine cases of infestation, i.e. where live lice are seen. More research is needed into methods of treating head lice. The school nurse has an important role in educating children, parents and school staff.

Permethrin resistance in the head louse Pediculus capitis from Israel.

Head lice, Pediculus capitis, were collected from children aged 3-12 years in Maale Adumin, a town near Jerusalem, after reports of control failure with the pyrethroid insecticide permethrin. A total of 1516 children were examined: living lice and eggs were found on 12.1% of the children; or another 22.8% of the children only nits were found. Twice as many girls as boys (8.1% v 4%) were infested with lice and or nits. Head lice collected from infested children were exposed to permethrin impregnated filter-papers. Log time probit mortality (ltp) regression lines were calculated for mortality da

Effect of cricoid pressure on the ease of fibrescope-aided tracheal intubation.

The number of head lice infestations occurring annually in the United States is estimated at 6 million to 12 million. Although a formal economic analysis of head lice treatments has not been conducted, the direct cost of treatment can be roughly estimated by considering the costs of pediculicides and taking into consideration that patients may self-treat up to 5 times before seeking medical care. Added to the direct costs of treatment are indirect costs because of lost school days and lost productivity and wages of parents who must stay home to care for children who are sent home from schools …

Epidemiology of Chewing Lice (Phthiraptera: Mallophaga) Fauna of Poultry in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Chewing lice are among the most significant ectoparasites affecting poultry, causing irritation, anemia, and reduced productivity, thereby posing economic and welfare challenges for poultry farmers. Their impact is particularly pronounced in sub-Saharan Africa, where poultry production is predominantly free-range with limited biosecurity, which increases exposure to infestation. This review was conducted to determine the epidemiology of chewing lice species of poultry in sub-Saharan African countries. A search of peer-reviewed literature on the epidemiology of chewing lice species of poultry w

Linognathus vituli (Anoplura: Linognathidae): population growth, dispersal and development of humoral immune responses in nai;ve calves following induced infestations.

Growth of Linognathus vituli populations following establishment at a point source was followed for 16 weeks on eight louse-naïve Holstein calves. Dispersal of lice from the point of infestation (withers) was monitored by examination of known louse predilection sights. Mean louse indices increased during the initial weeks reaching maximum mean values at 8 weeks post-infestation (p.i.). Subsequently, mean indices decreased, reaching a plateau that persisted through weeks 14 and 15 p.i. There was little movement away from the withers until 5 weeks p.i. Subsequently, numbers of lice on the wither

Evidence for the role of the sheep biting-louse Bovicola ovis in producing cockle, a sheep pelt defect.

The prevalence and severity of cockle, a sheep pelt defect characterised by raised lumps, was assessed on lambs that were either louse-infested (Bovicola ovis) or louse-free at birth. Assessments were made on pickled pelts, 10 months after the lambs had entered the trial. Lambs kept free of lice did not develop cockle, whereas the defect was common in lambs (about 90%) that were infested with lice. There was a direct correlation between louse scores and cockle, high louse scores being associated with a more severe degree of cockle. The results give support to the strong causal relationship bet

Use of topical nicotine for treatment of Pediculus humanus capitis (Anaplura: Pediculidae).

Head lice are caused by the host-specific, ectoparasitic insect Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer and remain a common human infestation. As a response to increasing resistance of head lice to present insecticidal agents, additional agents must be pursued. Inasmuch as nicotine has been used for controlling poultry lice, an in vitro study assessing its possible usage for human head lice was performed. Nicotine proved not to be an efficient insecticide, although it may facilitate removal of adult lice because it induces muscle twitches that may affect the insect's normal grip on hair follicles.

Akirins in sea lice: first steps towards a deeper understanding.

Sea lice (Copepoda, Caligidae) are the most widely distributed marine pathogens in the salmon industry. Vaccination could be an environmentally friendly alternative for sea lice control; however, research on the development of such vaccines is still at an early stage of development. Recent results have suggested that subolesin/akirin/my32 are good candidate antigens for the control of arthropod infestations, including sea lice, but background knowledge about these genes in crustaceans is limited. Herein, we characterize the my32 gene/protein from two important sea lice species, Caligus rogercr

Lice outbreak in buffaloes: evidence of Anaplasma marginale transmission by sucking lice Haematopinus tuberculatus.

Lice infestations are commonly seen in buffaloes, causing damage directly to the animal, i.e., itching, skin lesions, and anemia. In addition, these insects can also be vectors for infectious diseases. The present study describes an outbreak of lice in buffaloes as well as evidence for Haematopinus tuberculatus acting as a vector of anaplasmosis. Lice and blood were collected from 4 young buffaloes (2- to 4-mo-old) and a molecular analysis for the presence of Anaplasma marginale was conducted. DNA of A. marginale was detected in the blood of all 4 animals. Twelve lice were collected and separa…

First Detection of the Kdr Mutation T929I in Head Lice (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) in Schoolchildren of the Metropolitan Area of Nuevo Leon and Yucatan, Mexico.

The head louse Pediculus humanus capitis (De Geer) is a hematophagous ectoparasite that inhabits the human scalp. Infestations by this insect are commonly known as pediculosis, which is more common in younger groups. These infestations are asymptomatic; however, skin irritation from scratching occasionally may cause secondary bacterial infections. In recent years, the prevalence of pediculosis has increased in children; this increase has been attributed to louse resistance to the insecticides used as a control measure for infestation. The aim of the present study was to determine the presence

Persistent head lice following multiple treatments: evidence for insecticide resistance in Pediculus humanus capitis.

Viable head lice were found on the scalps of two family members following multiple topical insecticide treatments. The possibility of reinfestation had been reliably excluded. Persistent infestation could be diagnosed only after cutting the hair and combing repeatedly, which allowed visualization of juvenile (nymphal) and adult lice. Insecticide-resistant headlouse infestations are probably much more common than is generally realised and may persist unnoticed, so that more aggressive approaches will be needed to eradicate these ectoparasites from individuals and communities.

Head Lice.

BACKGROUND: Conflicting information about the proper treatment of head lice has given rise to uncertainty among patients and treating personnel. For example, the reported efficacy of permethrin fell from 97% in the 1990s to 30% in 2010. METHODS: Review of the literature based on a selective search of PubMed. RESULTS: In Germany, outbreaks of head lice mainly occur among 5- to 13-year-olds returning to school after the summer vacation. Nymphs hatch from eggs after an average of 8 days and become sexually mature lice over the ensuing 9 days. The main route of transmission is direct head-to-hea

Dispelling the common myths about pediculosis.

Pediculosis, the condition of being infested by head lice, is a major community health problem in the United States. Head lice, the most common species in humans, occupy considerable amounts of time and energy both within schools and the medical community. The condition creates school and family disturbances and personal embarrassment--consequences far exceeding its medical effects. Because parents are often embarrassed when they are informed about a head lice infestation, they often do not approach the subject with their health care providers. Pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) need to inco

Atlantic salmon infected with salmon lice are more susceptible to new lice infections.

Aggregation is commonly observed for macroparasites, but its adaptive value remains unclear. Heavy infestations intensities may lead to a decrease in some fitness-related traits of parasites (e.g. parasite fecundity or survival). However, to a dioecious parasite, increased aggregation could also increase the chance of finding individuals of the opposite sex. In a laboratory experiment, we tested if previous experience with salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) affected susceptibility of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to later exposure to the same parasite species. We found that currently infect

Head louse infestations before and during the COVID-19 epidemic in Israel.

Head louse infestations caused by Pediculus humanus capitis (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) are a public health problem in developing and developed countries worldwide. Head to head contact is by far the most common mode of lice transmission. In March 2020, WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic. Starting from March 2020, the Israeli government established mandatory isolation for extensive periods including closure of school systems for very long time. The aim of the project was to compare the pediculicide sale numbers before the COVID-19 epidemic with those starting of the epidemic in 2
