Early life trauma exposure and stress sensitivity in young children.

OBJECTIVE: The current study replicates and extends work with adults that highlights the relationship between trauma exposure and distress in response to subsequent, nontraumatic life stressors. METHODS: The sample included 213 2-4-year-old children in which 64.3% had a history of potential trauma exposure. Children were categorized into 4 groups based on trauma history and current life stress. RESULTS: In a multivariate analysis of variance, trauma-exposed children with current life stressors had elevated internalizing and externalizing problems compared with trauma-exposed children without

The cumulative impact of nonsevere life events predicts depression recurrence during maintenance treatment with interpersonal psychotherapy.

Although much research has focused on the role of severe life events as risk factors for depression onset, less is known about the relationship between nonsevere life events and depression recurrence. The current study examined the cumulative effects of nonsevere and positive life events on depression recurrence in an outpatient sample of recurrently depressed women treated to remission with interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT). A Cox proportional hazards model was used to test this relationship in 124 adult women who entered into the maintenance phase of IPT treatment and completed at least 1 Li

Stress and resilience in law enforcement training and practice.

For law enforcement and emergency services professionals, stress and resilience are not academic topics or luxuries; they are essential to the physical and mental health, as well as to optimum job functioning. This article traces the history of the stress and resilience concepts in psychology, the military, and law enforcement, outlines the major risk and protective factors for traumatic stress responses, and presents a general psychophysiological model of stress and coping. The article next applies these concepts to the proactive fostering of mental toughness and resilience, using lessons lea

Relationship between negative experiences and drinking experience among 15- to 16-year-old adolescents in Finland.

AIMS: To assess the relationship between negative experiences and frequency of alcohol drinking and drunkenness among 15- to 16-year-old adolescents in Finland. METHODS: A school-based survey as part of the European School Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) conducted in Finland in 2003. Nationally representative sample of Finnish adolescents, aged 15-16 (n = 3,321). Response rate 92%. Negative experiences, alcohol use and drunkenness were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between negative experiences and

Counterfactual thinking and posttraumatic stress reactions.

Preoccupation with alternative outcomes (counterfactual thinking) is a central component of the ruminations of trauma victims. The questions investigated were whether such thinking should be distinguished from general rumination and whether elements of counterfactual thinking might relate to the process of adjustment. A sample of assault victims was interviewed. They completed a battery of self-report scales and thought-listing procedures. Frequency of counterfactual thinking was closely associated with continuing levels of posttraumatic distress. However, high availability of counterfactuals

Is knowing believing? The role of event plausibility and background knowledge in planting false beliefs about the personal past.

False memories are more likely to be planted for plausible than for implausible events, but does just knowing about an implausible event make individuals more likely to think that the event happened to them? Two experiments assessed the independent contributions o f plausibility a nd background knowledge to planting false beliefs. In Experiment 1, subjects rated 20 childhood events as to the likelihood of each event having happened to them. The list included the implausible target event "received an enema," a critical target event of Pezdek, Finger, and Hodge (1997). Two weeks later, subjects

The enduring effects of abuse and related adverse experiences in childhood. A convergence of evidence from neurobiology and epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment has been linked to a variety of changes in brain structure and function and stress-responsive neurobiological systems. Epidemiological studies have documented the impact of childhood maltreatment on health and emotional well-being. METHODS: After a brief review of the neurobiology of childhood trauma, we use the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study as an epidemiological "case example" of the convergence between epidemiologic and neurobiological evidence of the effects of childhood trauma. The ACE Study included 17,337 adult HMO members and assessed 8 ad

Rumination and future thinking in depression.

OBJECTIVES: Future thinking is an important domain of cognitive functioning, with reduced ability to imagine positive future events associated with hopelessness in depression and parasuicide. Rumination has been shown to exacerbate negative cognitive biases in depression, and to reduce likelihood estimations for positive future events. We examine the hypothesis that, in depressed patients, rumination would reduce the ability to imagine positive future events, whilst increasing the ability to imagine negative future events. METHOD: The ability to imagine positive and negative future events was

Focal retrograde amnesia and the episodic-semantic distinction.

This article reports a review of focal retrograde amnesia (FRA), or the phenomenon of organically based severe memory loss restricted to retrograde, or pretraumatic, memory. Cases of FRA are classified according to the type of memory loss: episodic, semantic, or both. A few different clusters of the disorder were identified. Lesions to either the anterior temporal lobes or the posterior/visual cortex can result in an FRA that devastates retrograde episodic memory, while having smaller effects on semantic memory. A number of left-hemisphere patients have FRA confined to semantic memory. There a

Stressful life events and skin diseases: disentangling evidence from myth.

The possibility of a causal influence of emotional stress, especially of stressful life events, on the course of various skin diseases has long been postulated. Clinical wisdom and experience, as well as many anecdotal observations and uncontrolled case series, support this opinion. We reviewed the available evidence on the role of stressful life events in triggering or exacerbating skin diseases. The role of stressful events in vitiligo, lichen planus, acne, pemphigus and seborrhoeic dermatitis was either controversial or insufficiently explored. The role of stressful events in psoriasis, alo

Community mental health nurses in Wales: self-reported stressors and coping strategies.

There is evidence to suggest that community mental health nurses experience stress and burnout related to their work. Previous research has been limited by a number of methodological problems. One of the problems is that studies have tended to have small or unrepresentative samples, and many researchers have only examined mental health nurses as a subset within their research, which limits the generalizability of the findings. The All-Wales Community Mental Health Nurse (CMHN) Stress Study was set up in order to address this issue. The total population of CMHNs in Wales was surveyed (N = 614)

Autobiographical recollection and affects of cues in an amnesic patient.

The individual described herein (Y.K.) is a pure amnesic patient with severe anterograde amnesia and a selective loss of specific personal episodes in his remote memories. In this study, we examined whether more concrete cues could elicit specificity in his autobiographical memory. It was found that the richness of his autobiographical memory under the condition with probes was significantly higher than condition without probes, although Y.K.'s performance on recalling autobiographical memory was inferior to that of control subjects under both conditions. These results and our previous finding

Behçet's disease and psychosomatic patterns of thinking. A single case study.

BACKGROUND: A single case of Behçet's disease was studied throughout several consultations during a period of 15 years. METHODS: The evolution of the disease was related to important events in the subject's life, cognitive patterns, psychopathological features and, particularly, his relationships to women and to his family. RESULTS: Some interesting complex correlations between illness course and psychosocial events and states were highlighted. CONCLUSIONS: Future prospective studies could better elucidate this multiple feedback.

Gender roles and interactions in drinking and drug use.

In gender-focused discussions of alcohol and other drug use and problems, the emphasis has usually been on the individual male or female or on the genders as aggregates of individuals. But most drinking and much drug use have strong social and interactional elements, where gender roles and often gendered interactions come into play. Drawing on the existing literature, opportunities for research on gender roles and interactions in drinking and drug use and problems are discussed under the following headings: courtship and affectional preference; sexuality; marriage and partnership; parenthood;

[Psychosomatic aspects of focal dystonia: two case reports].

Dystonic movements and other dyskinesias often cause diagnostic difficulties due to their complex symptomatology. Namely focal dystonias are frequently misdiagnosed as conversion reactions. Idiopathic dystonias are generally considered a nonstructural (neurobiochemical) disorder of the basal ganglia. Many case reports, however, have dealt with patients presenting with "atypical" dystonia whose symptoms were relieved by psychotherapy or hypnosis. We present the histories of two young women exhibiting focal dystonia emerging for the first time under circumstances of profound emotional trouble. W

[Essential hypertension: psychosomatic aspects].

Essential hypertension is a heterogenous disease made up of several still unspecified subgroups. According to the dual theory of hypertension, acquired and genetic factors can lead to vascular muscle defects and increased sympathetic drive, which, either both or each alone, can lead to an increased vascular resistance. Acquired factors can either help a predisposition to become a manifest disease, act by itself to cause a disease or prevent a genetic trait from becoming manifest. Among the acquired factors, we differentiate those lying inside the personality, which means they are early acquire

Rôle of psychosomatic factors in peptic ulcer disease.

Evidence indicates that a link between peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and selected psychosomatic factors may exist. A series of 70 consecutive male and female adult patients were categorized by peptic symptoms and divided into four groups: a) controls; b) gastric ulcer (GU); c) duodenal ulcer (DU); and d) chronic non-ulcer dyspepsia (CNUD). All patients were interviewed and asked to answer a questionnaire that included demographics, medical history and the incidence of negative life events. A decreased level of activity was a predominant finding in GU, DU and CNUD patients. Family history of PUD m
