Case Report: A rare and recurrent case of primary corneal keratosis: diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

BACKGROUND: Ocular surface keratosis typically presents as a focal, hyperkeratotic lesion. While commonly associated with actinic damage on the eyelid margin or conjunctiva, primary corneal involvement is exceptionally rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old Asian female presented with a 10-year history of a recurrent white mass on the right cornea. Slit-lamp examination revealed a 3 × 3 × 4 mm, irregular, broad-based keratotic lesion at the nasal limbus, extending 1 mm onto the clear cornea. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) confirmed superficial stromal infiltration. The pa

Crescentic Tuck in Lamellar Keratoplasty-A Novel Technique in a Case of Advanced Pellucid Marginal Corneal Degeneration.

PURPOSE: To describe a new surgical technique "crescentic tuck in lamellar keratoplasty" for the management of advanced pellucid marginal corneal degeneration (PMCD). METHODS: A 45-year-old man with advanced PMCD and maximal thinning in the inferior juxtalimbal periphery underwent a crescentic lamellar keratoplasty in the right eye. Best-corrected visual acuity was 6/60 with no further improvement because of severe irregular astigmatism. Thinnest pachymetry in the peripheral cornea was 280 μm. Peripheral crescent-shaped lamellar corneal dissection of 3.5-mm width was performed, and an intrast

Use of supero-temporal free conjunctivo-limbal autograft in the surgical management of pterygium: our technique and results.

BACKGROUND: A pterygium is a fibro-vascular, wing shaped encroachment of the conjunctiva on to the cornea. The prevalence rates ranges from 0.7 to 31% among different populations and also influenced by age, race, and exposure to solar radiations. Ultraviolet light-induced damage to the limbal stem cell barrier with subsequent conjunctivalisation of the cornea is the currently accepted aetiology of this condition. Indication of surgery include visual impairment, cosmetic disfigurement, motility restriction, recurrent inflammation and interference with contact lens wear. This Study was conducted

Excess FGF-7 in corneal epithelium causes corneal intraepithelial neoplasia in young mice and epithelium hyperplasia in adult mice.

We hypothesized that human ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) may result from the continuous growth stimulation of corneal epithelial progenitor cells. In the present study, we analyzed the effects of excess fibroblast growth factor-7 (FGF-7) on both the proliferation and differentiation of corneal epithelium in a novel Krt12-rtTA/tet-O-FGF-7 double transgenic mouse model in which cornea-specific FGF-7 overexpression is achieved by doxycycline (Dox) treatment. When such adult mice were exposed to Dox, they exhibited epithelial hyperplasia with increases in phospho-extracellular signal-re

Heterogeneous expression of transketolase in ocular tissues.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that transketolase is preferentially expressed in the corneal epithelium and comprises up to 10% of the soluble protein of the mature mouse cornea. The aim of this study is to evaluate the expression and distribution of TKT in the different ocular tissues. METHODS: We have used in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry to localize TKT mRNA and protein in the developing and adult mouse eye. RESULTS: TKT were found to be widely distributed throughout the adult mouse eye. Among the ocular tissues examined, the corneal epithelium exhibited the highest le

Symblepharon secondary to ophthalmomyiasis externa in a dog.

A 4-month-old crossbred female dog presented with complaints of poor vision and odd appearance of the eyes. At the age of a month, the animal was found lying in a railway road in a very bad condition and was rescued from death. At that time, the patient was presented with severe bilateral ocular discharge, and from both eyes, dipterous fly larvae were extracted. The dog was given symptomatic treatment (deworming, topical and systemic antibiotics, nutritional support) but never regained a normal eye appearance. At the time of the initial presentation, it had severe vision impairment because of

Isolation and characterization of rabbit limbal niche cells.

Limbal niche cells (LNCs) are one of the most important supporting cells for corneal epithelial stem cells (CES), however, research on LNCs has been mostly limited to humans and rats previously. To expand the research work into the rabbit animal model, one of the most often used animals in stem cell study, this study was carried out for the in vitro isolation and identification of rabbit LNCs. Rabbit LNCs were isolated by collagenase A digestion method and single cells were obtained, the cells were then seeded on 5% Matrigel-coated plastic surface and cultured in modified embryonic stem cell m

Corneal Reconstruction with EGFP-Labelled Limbal Mesenchymal Stem Cells in a Rabbit Model of Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency.

Ocular surface reconstruction is essential for treating corneal epithelial defects and vision recovery. Stem cell-based therapy demonstrates promising results but requires further research to elucidate stem cell survival, growth, and differentiation after transplantation in vivo. This study examined the corneal reconstruction promoted by EGFP-labeled limbal mesenchymal stem cells (L-MSCs-EGFP) and their fate after transplantation. EGFP labeling allowed us to evaluate the migration and survival rates of the transferred cells. L-MSCs-EGFP seeded onto decellularized human amniotic membrane (dHAM)

[Peripheral ulcerative keratitis in a 24-year-old patient].

A 24-year-old female patient was admitted to hospital with a deep stromal corneal defect on the right eye and a melting marginal keratitis on the left eye with a differential diagnosis of Mooren's ulcer. Despite intensive topical and systemic therapy, the ulcer perforated 3 days later and perforating keratoplasty à chaud was performed. The histological examination of the cornea showed a mainly intact corneal structure with a sharp demarcation line between the melting process close to the limbus and the unaffected tissue. The limbal area was interspersed with inflammatory cells. During the subs

[Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the epibulbar connective tissue with diffuse intraocular epithelial invasion].

PATIENT: A 55-year-old man was treated twice with local excision and crycoagulation for a recurrent limbal mass of the left eye. The original histologic diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma. Three months after the last recurrence the globe was enucleated because of a spontaneous perforation at the corneoscleral limbus with iris prolapse. Histologic examination, including PAS and mucicarmine stains, revealed a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the epibulbar conjunctiva with infiltration of the cornea, sclera, iris and ciliary body. CONCLUSIONS: Examination of specially stained sections (e.g. with m

The phlycten, a come-back?

In February 1980 acute keratoconjunctivitis was seen in a girls' class in a school in Rotterdam. Bacteriological and virological examination was performed on 20 girls. The agent causing this epidemic could not be demonstrated. Three patients had phlyctens at the limbus. In the year following this observation (March 1980 till March 1981) 42 cases of phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis were examined prospectively. The condition was most commonly seen in 13- to 18-year old girls. The phlycten can be considered as an elementary form of inflammation in the conjunctiva and cornea, based on an immune r

PAX6 Deficiency Compromises the Ability of Limbal Epithelial Stem Cells to Properly Differentiate Into Mature Corneal Epithelial Cells.

PURPOSE: Aniridia, driven by PAX6 mutations, causes aniridia-associated keratopathy (AAK), a progressive condition linked to limbal stem cell deficiency. A major hurdle to developing targeted therapies for AAK is the incomplete understanding of the molecular abnormalities in affected corneas. To address this, we leveraged Pax6± (Pax6 het) mice, a model of AAK, and applied single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to profile the transcriptomic changes at a single-cell resolution. METHODS: ScRNA-seq of corneal/limbal tissues of wild type (WT) and Pax6 het mice were conducted. Immunostaining was pe
