Four-year elevated atmospheric CO2 increases soybean seed yield and reshapes fatty acid composition without consistently altering crude oil content.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO2) can stimulate crop productivity, but whether soybean oil-related responses remain stable under long-term CO2 enrichment remains unclear. We conducted a four-year open-top chamber experiment to examine seed yield, crude oil content, fatty acid composition, and oil quality indices in two soybean cultivars. Elevated CO2 consistently increased seed yield by 18-54%, with an average increase of 31%, but did not consistently increase crude oil content. Linoleic acid remained the dominant fatty acid, followed by oleic, palmitic, linolenic, and stearic acid

Carbohydrate and lipid components of hyphae and conidia of human pathogen Fonsecaea pedrosoi.

The carbohydrate and lipid components of mycelium and conidia of Fonsecaea pedrosoi (Brumpt) were analysed by paper, thin-layer and gas-chromatography, mass spectrometry and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Glucose, mannose, galactofuranose, rhamnose and glucosamine were polysaccharide components identified in F. pedrosoi. Significant changes in the carbohydrate pattern occurred during the conversion of mycelium into conidia. Rhamnose was predominant in conidia whereas galactose was prominent in mycelium. Palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and arachidonic acids were the fatty acids identified in the

Effects of immunosuppressants, calcineurin inhibition, and blockade of endoplasmic reticulum calcium channels on free fatty acid efflux from the ischemic/reperfused rat cerebral cortex.

Elevated levels of free fatty acids (FFA) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of neuronal injury and death induced by cerebral ischemia … )-ATPase ER uptake pump, elicited significant elevations in the efflux of myristic, arachidonic and linoleic acids, in the absence of ischemia. Collectively, the data suggest an involvement of both ER and mitochondrial Ca(2+) stores in the chain of events which lead to PLA(2) activation and FFA formation.

Increased arachidonic acid induced platelet chemiluminescence indicates cyclooxygenase overactivity in schizophrenic subjects.

Platelets were found to emit a burst of chemiluminescence during incubation with arachidonic or linoleic acid. This chemiluminescence response may indicate activation of the enzyme prostaglandin synthase in the arachidonate-induced platelet chemiluminescence as it is inhibited by aspirin. Stimulation of platelets with arachidonic acid and linoleic acid induced a concentration dependent chemiluminescence response. Platelets from drug naive schizophrenic subjects showed significantly increased arachidonic acid metabolism compared to control subjects. No significant difference was observed betwee

Polyunsaturated fatty acids, melatonin, and cancer prevention.

Many nutritional, hormonal, and environmental factors affect carcinogenesis and growth of established tumors in rodents. In some cases, these factors may either enhance or attenuate the neoplastic process. Recent experiments performed in our laboratory using tissue-isolated rat hepatoma 7288CTC in vivo or during perfusion in situ have demonstrated new interactions among four of these factors. Two agents, dietary linoleic acid (C18:2n6) and "light at night," enhanced tumor growth, and two others, melatonin and n3 fatty acids, attenuated growth. Linoleic acid stimulated tumor growth because it i

Essential fatty acid requirements in infancy.

The infant's requirements for essential fatty acids (EFA) have been calculated by different workers from the same limited number of observations which depended on the use of butterfat, linoleic acid, and its esters as the source of EFA. The linoleic acid content of the butterfat employed was determined by a method of known not to be specific for the biologically active linoleic acid (cis cisC18:2omega6). The assay reported (3.3%) is about double that (1+01.6%) usually anticipated. If the butterfat used was actually of average linoleic acid content, then estimates of requirements are about twic

[Skin changes, pathophysiology and therapy in deficiency of essential fatty acids].

Linoleic acid (C18: 2n-6) is a free fatty acid considered as essential in man; this is mainly based on the fact that man is incapable of its synthesis and that its deficiency accounts for a defined clinical picture. Linoleic acid (LA) is an essential component of cellular membranes and plays, therefore, an important role in cells; moreover, it plays a functional part on account of its precursory position of eicosanoids. For these reasons, the skin is a preferential target in case of LA deficiency, which alters the barrier function of the skin as well as the immunoregulation of the epidermic ho

[Changes in myocardial lipid composition during surgery with cold and chemical cardioplegia].

The changes of children myocardium lipid composition were studied for the first time during surgical intervention under cold crystalloid cardioplegia. The surgical intervention was performed as a result of congenital heart disease--atrial septal defect. It was shown that the quantity of short chain fatty acids decreased and the amount of long chain fatty acids increased in the content of phospholipid fraction. Simultaneously the amount of linoleic (C18:2 omega 6), of docosahexaenoic (C22:6 omega 3) and of some other fatty acids decreased in the content of cholesterol esthers. The accumulation

Effect of castration and cryptorchidism on fatty acid content of ovine adipose tissue.

Fatty acid analyses of perinephric and subcutaneous adipose tissue were made on 50 of Mehraban and Bakhriari breeds lambs to determine the effect of castration and cryptorchidism on ovine lipid composition. The level of stearic acid was significantly higher (p < 0·05) in cryptorchids than in wethers. Rams were also higher (p < 0·05) in the percentage of linoleic acid of the internal adipose tissue than wethers. The percentage of palmitic acid of subcutaneous tissue was higher (p < 0·05) in cryptorchid than rams. There was a tendency toward less saturated (palmitic and stearic) acids, but more

Assessing the effect of fatty acids on prostate carcinogenesis in humans: does self-reported dietary intake rank prostatic exposure correctly?

BACKGROUND: Dietary fatty acids may influence prostate carcinogenesis. Although the standard for assessing dietary effects in humans is the semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaire, the extent to which self-reported intake correctly ranks prostatic exposure is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine the correlation between reported intakes of different fatty acids and their concentrations in prostate tissue. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study of 52 men undergoing surgical resection of the prostate gland. Usual dietary intake of saturated, total unsaturated, oleic, and lin

Profiles of the fatty acids in the plasma membrane of human brain tumors.

Several studies demonstrated that certain fatty acids have specific effects on tumor cells. n-3 series fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) may suppress the carcinogenesis, whereas n-6 series fatty acids (arachidonic acid, linoleic acid) may exert tumor promoting effects. In this study, 19 patients with various brain tumors and 12 control brain tissues were studied. n-3, n-6, n-9 unsaturated fatty acids and certain saturated fatty acids levels were measured in the plasma membrane of tumor or control brain tissues by capillary gas chromatography. Mechanistic understanding of KCNQ1 activating polyunsaturated fatty acid analogs.

The KCNQ1 channel is important for the repolarization phase of the cardiac action potential. Loss of function mutations in KCNQ1 can cause long QT syndrome (LQTS), which can lead to cardiac arrythmia and even sudden cardiac death. We have previously shown that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and PUFA analogs can activate the cardiac KCNQ1 channel, making them potential therapeutics for the treatment of LQTS. PUFAs bind to KCNQ1 at two different binding sites: one at the voltage sensor (Site I) and one at the pore (Site II). PUFA interaction at Site I shifts the voltage dependence of the ch

The experimental and clinical pathology of diene conjugation.

The simple spectroscopic measurement of diene conjugation has long been an established but somewhat problematic marker of free-radical activity in biological systems. The main diene-conjugated compounds in human tissues and tissue fluids have now been identified as esters of octadeca-9,11-dienoic acid (18:2(9,11)), a non-peroxide isomer of linoleic acid (18:2(9,12)); and a range of high-performance liquid chromatographic methods has been developed for their detection and measurement. Significant abnormalities of phospholipid-esterified 18:2(9,11) have been found in the serum of chronic alcohol

Stimulation of chloride transport by fatty acids in corneal epithelium and relation to changes in membrane fluidity.

The effect of altering cell membrane lipids on ion transport across isolated corneas was studied. Corneas mounted in Ussing-type chambers showed a rapid increase in short-circuit current following treatment with a variety of unsaturated fatty acids of varying chain length and unsaturation. Measurements of membrane fluidity which utilize immunofluorescence labelling of membrane proteins showed corneal epithelial cell membranes to be significantly more fluid following linoleic acid treatment. Uptake studies indicate rapid incorporation of [14C]linoleic acid into corneal cell membranes. Highly un

Lipoperoxidase activity of Pityrosporum: characterisation of by-products and possible rôle in pityriasis versicolor.

Modification of pigmentation and damage of melanocytes are characteristic features of skin colonisation of Pityrosporum orbiculare hyphae in pityriasis versicolor (PV). The yeast is lipophylic and lipid-dependent, capable of oxidising unsaturated lipid components of skin surface, i.e., unsaturated fatty acids, cholesterol and squalene (SQ). The oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids gives rise to dicarboxylic acids (DA) which behave, in vitro, as competitive inhibitors of tyrosinase. In this work, we further investigate the oxidase activity of Pityrosporum in vitro, by evaluating (a) the generat
