Socioeconomic differences in cancer incidence and mortality.

This chapter summarizes accumulated data on the presence, magnitude and consistency of socioeconomic differentials in mortality and incidence of all malignant neoplasms and 24 individual types of neoplasms in 37 populations in 21 countries. More or less consistent excess risks in men in lower social strata were observed for all respiratory cancers (nose, larynx and lung) and cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, and, with a number of exceptions, liver, as well as for all malignancies taken together. For women, low-class excesses were consistently encountered for cancers

Alveolar Echinococcosis Mimicking Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma Leading to Liver Transplant: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a slowly progressive parasitic disease that primarily affects the liver and resembles primary or secondary liver neoplasms. Differentiating AE from other primary or secondary liver malignancies is of paramount importance, due to differing therapeutic approaches. The disease is uncommon in developed countries. Initial extrahepatic manifestation mimicking a primary biliary neoplasm is extremely rare. A broad differential diagnosis and low disease prevalence make the diagnosis of primary biliary AE extremely challenging. CASE REPORT We present a 32-year-…

An Overview of Neoplasia in Captive Wild Felids in Southern Italy Zoos.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of neoplasms in captive wild felids in Southern Italy zoos over a 13-year period (2008-2021) and to investigate macroscopic and histologic tumor findings in these animals. A total of 24 cases were necropsied, 9 males and 15 females, with age ranging from 6 to 19 years, including 12 tigers (Panthera tigris), 7 leopards (Panthera pardus), 4 lions (Panthera leo), and 1 black jaguar (Panthera onca). Diagnosis of neoplasm was made in 14/24 cases (58.3%). Tumors diagnosed were two cholangiocarcinomas, two hemangiosarcomas of the liver, two uterine

[Interventional therapeutic strategies for metastatic liver cancer].

Metastatic liver cancer is a common terminal manifestation of malignant neoplasms, with colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) being particularly prevalent. Surgical resection is applicable only to a small proportion of patients. In recent years, interventional therapy has become an important local treatment modality for patients with unresectable metastatic liver cancer, offering advantages such as minimal invasiveness, precision, and repeatability, thus supporting downstaging, bridging, and salvage therapy. The role of interventional therapy is shifting from terminal palliative care towar

Idiopathic Vanishing Bile Duct Syndrome in a Young Female: A Case Report.

Vanishing bile duct syndrome (VBDS) is characterized by the progressive loss and destruction of the intrahepatic bile ducts, leading to bile stasis and associated symptoms such as jaundice. This condition is commonly associated with drug side effects, infections, neoplasms, and autoimmune diseases, but the precise mechanism of its development is unclear. Although VBDS can be diagnosed based on the patient's symptoms and disease progression, a liver biopsy is essential for confirmation, and the prognosis can vary significantly. This paper presents a rare case of a young female patient diagnosed

[Biliary-duodenal fistula following radiofrequency ablation therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma].

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant neoplasms occurring worldwide. Surgical resection currently provides the best chance of long-term tumor free survival, but the most HCCs are not candidates for surgical excision due to poor liver function or poor medical background. Numerous noninvasive alternatives to surgical resection have been introduced to treat liver cancers. Radiofrequency thermal ablation has begun to receive much attention as an effective and minimally invasive technique for the local control of HCC. The biliary system related complications after radio

'Teratoid' Hepatoblastoma: An Intriguing Variant of Mixed Epithelial-Mesenchymal Hepatoblastoma.

Liver neoplasms are quite rare in childhood. They often involve 6.7 cases per 10 million children aged 18 years or younger. Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most frequent tumor, but this neoplasm's rarity points essentially to the difficulty of performing biologic studies and large-scale therapeutic trials. On the pathological ground, HB is separated into an entirely epithelial neoplasm or a mixed neoplasm with epithelial and mesenchymal components. This last category has been further subdivided into harboring teratoid features or not. The 'teratoid' HB includes a mixture of components with heterolo…

Pulmonary hemorrhage after radioablation of liver metastases.

Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of primary or secondary liver neoplasm is a minimally invasive new technique that is useful in high-risk surgical patients. We describe a case of pulmonary hemorrhage in a patient undergoing percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of liver metastases under general anesthesia. The patient subsequently had an uneventful recovery. We believe that radiofrequency energy caused injury to the diaphragm, pleura, and lung tissue.

[Radiographic, sonographic and computer tomographic appearance of hydatid disease of the liver (author's transl)].

Hydatid disease of the liver is no rare condition nowadays. The radiographic, angiographic, sonographic and computer tomographic manifestation of three typical cases out of twelve are described. The routine X-ray film can be successful in establishing the diagnosis in about 30% of the cases. Computer tomography is the diagnostic method of choice. The morphologic differences to Echinococcus alveolaris are mentioned. This lesion can simulate a primary or secondary neoplasm of the liver.

IgE Plasma Cell Leukemia Harboring t(11;14) and 1q Amplification.

IgE plasma cell neoplasm is the rarest subtype of plasma cell neoplasms and is known for its poor prognosis and high incidence of t(11;14). However, t(11;14) has been classified as a standard-risk rather than high-risk cytogenetic abnormality in multiple myeloma. We have been unable to explain the discrepancy that the hallmark of IgE plasma cell neoplasm with a poor prognosis is a standard-risk cytogenetic abnormality. Here, we report a case of IgE primary plasma cell leukemia with extramedullary lesions of the liver, stomach, and lymph nodes. Plasma cell infiltration was pathologically confir

Primary hepatic malignant fibrous histiocytoma: report of a case and review of the literature.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a common sarcoma of adulthood, frequently arising in the extremities, but also in the abdomen and the retroperitoneum. Primary MFH of the liver, however, remains extremely rare and is one of the least diagnosed primary hepatic sarcoma. Another case of primary MFH of the liver is reported. The patient presented with a 12 cm mass involving the right and left lobes of the liver. The histopathologic examination revealed a typical MFH swirling (storiform) pattern composed of atypical spindle and giant cells. The radiologic, histologic, and clinical behavior o

Hydroxylamine effects on cryptogenic neoplasm development in C3H mice.

The effect of administration of hydroxylamine (HA) to male and female mice was studied because of reports suggesting an anticarcinogenic effect and an enhancement of lifespan. In this study, two C3H sublines were used: the C3H/HeN which carries a germinal provirus of the mouse mammary tumor virus and the C3H/HeJ(+) which also carries the milk-transmitted exogenous virus. Lifetime administration of 10 mM HA in the drinking water resulted in a decrease in mammary neoplasm incidence in female C3H/HeN mice, but not in female C3H/HeJ(+) mice. Ovarian neoplasms and cysts were common in all groups, i

Expanding the spectrum of mesenchymal neoplasms with NR1D1-rearrangement.

Undifferentiated mesenchymal neoplasms can be morphologically subclassified based on cell shape; epithelioid tumors may be diagnostically challenging, particularly since they can show morphologic and immunohistochemical overlap with epithelial neoplasms. Following the recent report of an NR1D1::MAML1 gene fusion in an undifferentiated pediatric neoplasm, we performed a retrospective archival review and identified four additional cases of undifferentiated mesenchymal neoplasms with NR1D1-rearrangement. All four tumors occurred in adult women. The tumors involved superficial and/or deep soft tis

Proposed Diagnostic Criteria and Classification of Canine Mast Cell Neoplasms: A Consensus Proposal.

Mast cell neoplasms are one of the most frequently diagnosed malignancies in dogs. The clinical picture, course, and prognosis vary substantially among patients, depending on the anatomic site, grade and stage of the disease. The most frequently involved organ is the skin, followed by hematopoietic organs (lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and bone marrow) and mucosal sites of the oral cavity and the gastrointestinal tract. In cutaneous mast cell tumors, several grading and staging systems have been introduced. However, no comprehensive classification and no widely accepted diagnostic criteria have

A morphologic and immunocytochemical study of hepatic neoplasms in cats.

A retrospective study was done of 47 neoplasms of the hepatic and biliary systems from 47 cats brought to The Animal Medical Center over a period of 10 years (1980 to 1989). Histologic examination of specimens taken at necropsy revealed that 87% (41/47) of the hepatic neoplasms were epithelial and 13% (6/47) were nonepithelial. Of the epithelial tumors, 25/47 (53%) were of intrahepatic bile duct origin, 9/47 (19%) were of hepatocellular origin, 5/47 (11%) involved the extrahepatic bile ducts, and 2/47 (4%) were adenocarcinomas of the gall bladder. Of the nonepithelial neoplasms, hemangiosarcom

Presumptive metastatic leiomyosarcoma in a feedlot steer.

A 14-month-old feedlot steer was depressed and died while being examined. The gross post-mortem examination of the steer conducted at the feedlot identified numerous masses within the abdomen and thorax, including a large mass in the liver that eroded into the vena cava. Many masses in the lungs appeared to be the result of hematogenous distribution. Histologic examination of the masses confirmed the presence of neoplasia. Although the histologic appearance of the neoplasms was not typical of well-differentiated leiomyosarcoma, immunohistochemical staining supported that diagnosis. Leiomyosarc

Small intestinal angiosarcoma leading to perforation and acute abdomen: a case report and review of the literature.

A 76-year-old man presented to the emergency room with abdominal pain and fatigue. The patient had a history of gastrointestinal bleeding. An abdominal computed tomographic scan showed collections of free air in the abdomen with obstruction of the distal small intestine and multiple masses in the liver. Laparotomy revealed a widespread malignant neoplasm in the abdomen, with multiple tumor nodules in the ileal wall, mesentery, and liver. The ileal wall was perforated within the area of one of the tumors. Pathologic examination of the lesion showed a neoplasm composed of solid sheets of spindle

A practical approach to liver metastasis from unknown primary cancer: What surgeons need to know.

The liver is a site of metastasis in 25% of metastatic cancers (Abbruzzese et al., 1995). In Western countries, metastases are the most common type of malignant neoplasms in the liver. The majority of liver metastases arise from carcinomas, but other primary tumor types should also be considered, such as lymphomas, sarcomas, melanomas, and germ cell tumors. Of primary liver malignancies, hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common (Hertz et al., 2000). The differentiation between metastatic carcinoma to the liver and primary hepatocellular carcinoma is sometimes challenging. In the last decade

[Pathology of liver tumors].

Neoplasms of the liver may arise from any cell type within the liver parenchyma. Hepatocellular carcinoma is by far the most common primary malignant tumour of the liver in adults. Indeed, it is one of the most common tumours in the world with striking geographic differences. These incidence rates can be explained by differences in Hepatitis-Virus carrier rates which they closely reflect. Nearly 10% of malignant liver tumors are represented by cholangiocarcinoma which originates from small intrahepatic bile ducts. Hepatoblastoma accounts for approximately 5% of malignancies in childhood. Most
