The Impact of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico's Long-Term Care Settings.

In September 2017, Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, devastating the island for years to come. Puerto Rico has a rapidly aging population and does not have the long-term care (LTC) infrastructure of the United States mainland. This research describes experiences of individuals working in, residing in, and providing disaster response to LTC settings in Puerto Rico during and after Hurricane Maria. From January to March 2019, N = 20 in-person interviews were conducted with nursing home staff in three Puerto Rican nursing homes; in-home caregivers; and individuals providing disaster response. T

COVID-19 Vaccination in a Former Fukushima Nuclear Accident Evacuation Area: COVID-19 Vaccination for Former Evacuees.

After the Fukushima accident in 2011, approximately 160000 residents were forced to evacuate the site. The evacuation order has since been lifted and the Japanese government is now advancing a return strategy. As the return proceeds, deterioration of health indicators and measures in the municipalities around the nuclear power plant remains unchanged. This affected the local governments' coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination drive during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japan, municipalities keep track of residents' information and implement health-related measures. However, many residents evacu…

Schistosomiasis-related perceptions, attitudes and treatment-seeking practices in Magu district, Tanzania: public health implications.

A study on perceptions, attitudes and treatment-seeking practices related to schistosomiasis was conducted among the Wasukuma in the rural Magu district of Tanzania at the shore of Lake Victoria where Schistosoma haematobium and mansoni infections are endemic. The study applied in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and a questionnaire survey among adults and primary school children. The perceived symptoms and causes were incongruous with the biomedical perspective and a number of respondents found schistosomiasis to be a shameful disease. Lack of diagnostic and curative services at the

Community-based ivermectin distributors: onchocerciasis control at the village level in Plateau State, Nigeria.

The use of community residents as agents for distributing mass ivermectin therapy for onchocerciasis provides a component of community participation absent from mobile team delivery methods. Community-based distribution, however, presupposes preexisting human resources in the endemic villages capable of fulfilling the essential functions of an ivermectin distribution process: mobilizing and educating the population, dispensing the drug, maintaining records, and monitoring and treating adverse reactions. Even when such human resources exist, the community workers must continue to receive tangib

Governing socio-ecological transition in an industrial city: public institutions' prominence and the risk of a top-down process.

This article examines the governance of the socio-ecological transition in the industrial city of Taranto (Italy) as it strives to move beyond its historical dependence on the steel industry and towards a more sustainable model of development. Based on the qualitative evidence, the article shows the protagonism of local public institutions, namely, the Puglia Region and the Municipality of Taranto. Through a mix of ideational, political, and economic mechanisms, local public institutions have adopted a post-industrial economic model and articulated a vision for Taranto's transition aligned wit

State and Local Policies as a Structural and Modifiable Determinant of HIV Vulnerability Among Latino Migrants in the United States.

We explore how state and local policies in labor, health, education, language, community and neighborhood environments, deportation, and state-authorized identification can reduce or exacerbate HIV vulnerability among Latino migrants in the United States. We reviewed literature on Latino migrants and HIV risk, on the structural-environmental contexts experienced by Latino migrants, and on the many domains in which policies influence those contexts. To illustrate the pathways through which policies across multiple sectors are relevant to HIV vulnerability, we describe how policies shape 2 media

The COVID-19 pandemic and economic recovery: The mediating role of governance, a global perspective.

The COVID-19 pandemic, arguably the most extensive economic shock after the Great Depression, has drawn attention from policy custodians over the past three years. Governments' response brought to the limelight the role that governance plays in mitigating the economic shrinking effects of a pandemic. This study investigated the mediating role of governance in the post-pandemic recovery process using structural equation modelling of cross-sectional data from 125 countries for the years 2020 and 2021. The results show that governance did not mediate economic recovery at the global level. However

Building the speech-language pathology workforce in Cambodia through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals.

PURPOSE: Current speech-language pathology (SLP) services in Cambodia are limited in scope, service accessibility and integration into government systems. This paper examines the depth and breadth of SLP support available to people with communication and/or swallowing difficulties in relation the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). METHOD AND RESULT: Qualitative interview data collected from service facilities (n = 13) and speech therapy practitioners (n = 27) were mapped and analysed for accessibility and sco

Acute hepatic porphyrias in Mexico: A tale of challenges and achievements facing rare diseases.

Worldwide, patients with porphyrias face critical delays in diagnosis. In Mexico this situation is no exception and, due to the characteristics of the local health system, population distribution and lack of access to health services and specialized porphyria centers, diagnosis and treatment are complex. Much work remains to be done, in collaboration with government authorities, physicians, advocacy groups and the pharmaceutical industry, to provide knowledge, diagnostic tools and targeted therapies to all porphyria patients in need.

Outcomes of the first round of local authority air quality Review and Assessments under the UK's air quality strategy.

In 1997, the UK government instigated the practice of Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) in the UK. This process is based on local authorities undertaking Review and Assessments of air quality within their areas. The first round of Review and Assessments have now been completed and represents the most extensive and coordinated analysis of air pollution ever undertaken in the UK, and probably in Europe. This paper takes a broad look at the outcomes of this process so far and identifies some of the key areas where lessons have/can be learnt both about patterns of air pollution in the UK and abo

Local public health systems and the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the associations of local public health system organization and local health department resources with county-level sexually transmitted disease (STD) incidence rates in large US health jurisdictions. METHODS: We linked annual county STD incidence data (2005-2008) to local health department director responses (n = 211) to the 2006 wave of the National Longitudinal Study of Local Public Health Systems, the 2005 national Local Health Department Profile Survey, and the Area Resource File. We used nested mixed effects regression models to assess the relative contribution o

Everyday territories: homelessness, outreach work and city space.

This article develops a situational approach to understanding urban public life and, in particular, the production of urban territories. Our aim is to examine the ways in which city space might be understood as comprising multiple, shifting, mobile and rhythmed territories. We argue that such territories are best understood through attending to their everyday production and negotiation, rather than handling territory as an a priori construct. We develop this argument from the particular case of the street-level politics of homelessness and street care. The experience of street homelessness and

Local health department food safety and sanitation expenditures and reductions in enteric disease, 2000-2010.

OBJECTIVES: In collaboration with Public Health Practice-Based Research Networks, we investigated relationships between local health department (LHD) food safety and sanitation expenditures and reported enteric disease rates. METHODS: We combined annual infection rates for the common notifiable enteric diseases with uniquely detailed, LHD-level food safety and sanitation annual expenditure data obtained from Washington and New York state health departments. We used a multivariate panel time-series design to examine ecologic relationships between 2000-2010 local food safety and sanitation expe
