The purpose of this study was to longitudinally investigate changes in knee joint kinematics and kinetics from 2 to 8 years post-ACLR. Seventeen subjects with primary unilateral transtibial ACLR performed bilateral gait analysis approximately 2 years and 8 years post-ACLR. Seventeen matched healthy control subjects were also analyzed. Kinematic and kinetic comparisons between the ACLR and contralateral limbs over time were completed using a 2 × 2 (time, limb) repeated-measures ANOVA. Unpaired Student's t-tests were used to compare the ACLR and contralateral kinematics and kinetics to the contr

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the cross-sectional area (CSA) of deep cervical flexors as measured by magnetic resonance imaging in ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) patients with neck pain and, by implication, how this may relate to recruitment of the deep cervical flexors and sternocleidomastoid.
DESIGN: A retrospective case-control study was conducted. All 72 subjects were imaged using plain radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
RESULTS: There was a more limited cervical range of motion in the OPLL group than that i

BACKGROUND: Two-dimensional imaging is not adequate for evaluating ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). This study was designed to evaluate the accuracy of a novel computed tomography (CT)-based three-dimensional (3D) analysis method that we had devised to measure volume changes in OPLL.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty OPLL patients (12 male and 8 female; mean age 63.6 years) who were being followed conservatively were examined twice with an interval of at least 1 year between the two scans. The mean interval was 22 (range 12-45) months. A 3D model was created with DICOM d

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a kind of disease with physical barriers and neurological disorders. The objective of this study was to explore the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in OPLL patient ligament cells and identify the target sites for the prevention and treatment of OPLL in clinic. Gene expression data GSE5464 was downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus; then DEGs were screened by limma package in R language, and changed functions and pathways of OPLL cells compared to normal cells were identified by DAVID (The Database for Annotation, Visualizatio

The optimal treatment strategy for ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) depends on symptoms and is uncertain. Whether the risk of spinal cord injury (SCI) is increased in patients with cervical spinal stenosis or myelopathy caused by OPLL remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of SCI in patients with OPLL of the cervical spine when managed with conservative treatment (no surgery). Study subjects were identified from a nationwide cohort of 26,544,883 people from 1998 to 2005 and were divided into the OPLL group (n=265), who were hospitalized for OPLL but ha

INTRODUCTION: Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a significantly critical pathology that can eventually cause serious myelopathy. Ossification commences in the vertebral posterior longitudinal ligaments, and intensifies and spreads with the progression of the disease, resulting in osseous projections and compression of the spinal cord. However, the paucity of histological studies the underlying mechanisms of calcification and ossification processes remain obscure. The pathological process could be simulated in the ossifying process of the ligament in mutant spinal hy…

A 60-year-old man presented with thoracic myelopathy due to ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). His spinal cord was severely impinged anteriorly by a beak-type OPLL and posteriorly by ossification of the ligamentum flavum at T4/5. He underwent surgical posterior decompression with instrumented fusion (PDF). Immediately after surgery, he developed a Brown-Séquard-type paralysis, which spontaneously resolved without requiring the addition of OPLL extirpation. This example highlights that the risk of postoperative neurological deterioration cannot be eliminated even when P

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Extradural cysts intimately associated with relatively normal lumbar discs have rarely been reported. Histologically nonspecific, most have been designated posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) or annulus fibrosus (AF) "ganglion cysts." Recently, "disc cysts" have been distinguished as a separate entity, mostly on the grounds of cyst-disc communication.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: Three young male patients presented with unilateral sciatica. In all cases, magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated rounded, cystic lesions (i.e., hypointense on T1- but hyperintense on T2-weigh

We have presented a technique for reconstruction of the central band of the interosseous membrane in conjunction with surgical repair of the distal radial joint and radial head prosthesis. With this technique, we address all three anatomic structures that provide longitudinal stability of the forearm, specifically, (1) radial head replacement, (2) interosseous membrane reconstitution, and (3) TFCC repair.

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) may be associated with certain rheumatic conditions including ankylosing spondylitis (AS), diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) or spondylosis. More than 95% of all OPLL are localized at the cervical spine. Herein, we report a case of OPLL at the thoracic spine in an HLA-B27-positive female patient with ankylosing spondylitis. The patient was presented to use with spastic paraparesis. The imaging studies included plain roentgenograms, tomograms, myelo-CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A continuous rod-like ossificatio

The etiology of OPLL still remains obscure. The purpose of this study is to clarify whether OPLL in the cervical spine occurs more often in the Japanese than in the Chinese and the Takasago tribe (native tribe) in Taiwan. Lateral X-ray films of the cervical spine in these inhabitants over the age of 30 years were studied. Results were as follows. The prevalent rate of OPLL in the cervical spine was significantly lower in the Chinese (p less than 0.01) and in the Takasago tribe (p less than 0.05) as compared to the Japanese in Kagoshima. OPLL was found in 2 out of 1,004 Chinese (0.2%), in 2 out

BACKGROUND: Thoracic spinal stenosis (TSS) is a severe spinal disorder that can lead to thoracic myelopathy, particularly in non-ambulatory patients. Thoracic ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (T-OPLL) and thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum (T-OLF) are the primary etiologies, but their differences in clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes remain unclear. This study aimed to compare the clinical features and surgical efficacy between non-ambulatory T-OPLL and T-OLF patients.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 126 non-ambulatory patients (70

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Thoracic ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (T-OPLL) causes severe neurological deficits. Surgical management is challenging due to the thoracic spine's anatomical complexity. This case report aims to describe a novel hybrid open-endoscopic technique for the treatment of severe thoracic OPLL, with the objective of demonstrating its feasibility and safety in a high-risk obese patient.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 29-year-old male with class III obesity was hospitalized for progressive bilateral lower extremity weakness over 2 months, recently worsening

Catheter ablation is widely regarded as a safe and effective treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). However, rare but severe complications may occur, particularly in patients with undiagnosed structural abnormalities. A 60-year-old man with paroxysmal AF developed complete tetraplegia following catheter ablation under moderate sedation. The procedure was uneventful; however, the patient immediately developed profound quadriparesis. An urgent cervical spine Magnetic Resonance Imaging revealed extensive mixed-type ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) from C2 to T2 with sev
