Chronic Mg2+ deficiency is the underlying cause of a broad range of health dysfunctions. As 25% of body Mg2+ is located in the skeletal muscle, Mg2+ transport and homeostasis systems (MgTHs) in the muscle are critical for whole-body Mg2+ homeostasis. In the present study, we assessed whether Mg2+ deficiency alters muscle fiber characteristics and major pathways regulating muscle physiology. C57BL/6J mice received either a control, mildly, or severely Mg2+-deficient diet (0.1%; 0.01%; and 0.003% Mg2+ wt/wt, respectively) for 14 days. Mg2+ deficiency slightly decreased body weight gain and muscl

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of magnesium (Mg) supplements in rats during prolonged restriction of motor activity (hypokinesia [HK]) and in the presence of Mg deficiency, which is characterized by increased rather than decreased plasma Mg concentration, as occurs in ambulatory conditions. The studies were performed during 98 days of HK on 100 13-week-old Sprague-Dawlay male rats weighing 360 to 390 g. They were equally divided into four groups: (1) unsupplemented control animals (UCA), (2) unsupplemented hypokinetic animals (UHA), (3) supplemented control anim

Prolonged treatment of premature infants with the potent diuretic furosemide has resulted in hypercalciuria, sometimes with renal calcinosis and other complications. Furosemide was administered to weanling rats to explore its effect on magnesium and calcium metabolism. The animals were fed purified diets providing 40 mg magnesium/100 g diet or 10 mg magnesium/100 g. Half of each dietary group (40-F or 10-F) received 18 doses of furosemide, 20 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneally between days 7 and 35, and half received normal saline intraperitoneally (40-O or 10-O). Furosemide had little effec

Nearly 30% of adults consume less than the estimated average daily requirement of magnesium (Mg2+), and commonly used medications, such as diuretics, promote Mg2+ deficiency. Higher serum Mg2+ levels, increased dietary Mg2+ in-take, and Mg2+ supplementation are each associated with lower blood pressure, suggesting that Mg2+-deficiency contributes to the pathogenesis of hypertension. Antigen-presenting cells, such as monocytes and dendritic cells, are well-known to be involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension. In these cells, processes implicated as necessary for increased blood pressure inc

UNLABELLED: Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is often noted in patients with coeliac disease (CD). The aim of the study was the analysis of the rea … ithin normal values [GFD(+) mean 1.95 g/24 h, in GFD(-) without diarrhoea 1.7 g/24 h.
CONCLUSIONS: Magnesium deficiency in children with CD depends on the form of the disease, adhering to GFD, diarrhoea with steatorrhea, and/or low Mg intake with the diet.

The calcium, magnesium and iron intakes provided by food must be sufficient to fulfil the physiological demands of each individual, to avoid the clinical manifestations of mineral deficiencies and to ensure an optimal state of health. For these reasons, it is desirable to ensure a sufficient calcium intake (notably by milk products) at all ages and particularly in children, adolescents and young adults up to the age of 25 (and also in elderly people to prevent osteoporosis); to recommend the consumption of magnesium-rich foods, such a little sifted cereals and dry vegetables to ensure sufficie

Clinical and experimental investigations have shown that magnesium depletion causes a marked irritability of the nervous system, eventually resulting in epileptic seizures. Although magnesium deficiency as a cause of epilepsy is uncommon, its recognition and correction may prove life-saving. Two case reports are presented which emphasize the importance of recognizing hypomagnesaemia in patients with acute intractable seizures.

Potassium and magnesium deficiencies, particularly those induced by conventional loop and thiazide diuretic therapy, have been linked in clinical studies to an increased frequency in serious arrhythmias and mortality in acute myocardial infarction. Magnesium repletion has been shown not only to increase magnesium levels, but also to increase muscle potassium and to decrease the frequency of ventricular ectopic beats. Potassium replenishment alone may have a detrimental effect in magnesium-depleted patients. The potassium-sparing diuretic spironolactone (Aldactone) has been shown to spare both
