A study of the magnetic properties of haem a3 in cytochrome c oxidase by using magnetic-circular-dichroism spectroscopy.

M.c.d. (magnetic-circular-dichroism) spectroscopy was used to study the magnetization properties of the haem centres in cytochrome c oxidase with magnetic fields of between 0 and 5.3 T over the temperature range 1.5--200 K. The oxidized, oxidized cyanide and partially reduced cyanide forms of the enzyme were studied. In the oxidized state only cytochrome a3+ is detectable by m.c.d. spectroscopy, and its magnetization characteristics show it to be a low-spin ferric haem. In the partially reduced cyanide form of the enzyme cytochrome a is in the diamagnetic low-spin ferrous form, whereas cytochr

Magnetic anisotropy and electronic structure in surface-supported single rare-earth atom magnets: a topical review.

Surface-supported single rare-earth atom magnets represent an ultimate limit of magnetic miniaturisation, where information storage is reduced to the scale of an individual atom. At this limit, magnetism is intrinsically quantum mechanical and governed by the interplay of strong electron correlations, crystal-field (CF) effects, and spin-orbit coupling within the localisedshell. In this review, we summarise and analyse recent theoretical advances in the description of rare-earth adatoms, with particular emphasis on approaches that go beyond conventional static mean-field DFT+, which may exhibi

Combining tethered and untethered magnetic robots via a magnetically triggerable latch for target payload delivery and retrieval.

The reach and scope of minimally invasive surgical procedures can be transformed via the development of continuum robots. Through soft, flexible structures and accurate navigation, previously inaccessible anatomical regions can be safely reached. Dependent on both actuation mode and clinical application, however, rigidity and miniaturization potential can still present substantial challenges. Magnetic soft continuum robots (mSCRs) offer promising solutions to these key questions. Furthermore, micrometer- to millimeter-scale untethered magnetic robots (mUMRs) offer unparalleled miniaturization

Miniaturized 3D Magnetic Force Sensor via Laser-Assisted Folding and Magnetization for Enhanced Robotic Dexterity.

Magnetic tactile sensor with centripetally magnetization designs is capable of efficient 3D force decoupling sensing, which is essential for advancing robotic dexterity. Nevertheless, the miniaturization of sensors remains a challenge, primarily due to the complexities associated with precisely fabricating such planar magnetic structures. Here, we present a laser-assisted folding and magnetization (LAFM) method to create centripetally magnetized films. Laser-etched grooves enable controlled folding, achieving accurate magnetization alignment in films as small as 5 × 5 mm2, which are verified b

Anisotropic magnetic particles with different dimensions, morphologies and surface grafting for magnetic field-assisted biofilm removal.

Microorganisms in biofilms are protected from environmental stressors and therefore exhibit strong resistance to conventional removal strategies, including chemical disinfectants and antibiotics. In this study, we systematically evaluated nanomaterial-based removal methods on Listeria innocua biofilms. Anisotropic magnetic particles, composed of iron oxide, and silver nanoparticles, known for their intrinsic antibacterial properties, were used to assess the potential of nanostructure-triggered biofilm disruption. We investigated how particle surface roughness and size affect biofilm removal un

Ultra-high field magnetic resonance spectroscopy study of transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment in adolescents with depression.

BACKGROUND: Altered glutamatergic and GABAergic signaling is increasingly implicated in the neurobiology of adolescent major depressive disorder (MDD). Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) interventions may restore balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission. To explore these mechanisms, we quantified cortical GABA, glutamate, and glutamine concentrations with ultra-high field (7 T) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in adolescents with MDD treated with TMS for six weeks. METHODS: 7 T-MRS data were collected from the occipital lobe of adolescents with MDD (n = 26) prior t

SCMAS: an IMU-based 6-DOF closed-loop permanent magnet actuation system for magnet agent.

Over the past two decades, the method of controlling magnetic capsule robots for targeted drug delivery in gastrointestinal (GI) environments using external magnetic fields has been frequently discussed. In typical targeted drug delivery tasks, capsule robots must not only possess the ability to navigate across large obstacles but also adjust their orientation upon reaching the target site. However, most reported magnetic actuation systems struggle to simultaneously fulfill these two requirements. In this paper, we present a three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) semi-open closed-loop magnetic actuat

Anomalous Magnetic Hysteresis up to 20 K in a Non-Kramers Light-Lanthanide Single-Molecule Magnet.

Light-lanthanides (Ln), despite their widespread uses in commercial permanent magnets, are among the least explored metal elements as building blocks of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) due to their smaller magnetic moments as well as weaker spin-orbit couplings than those of the heavy-Ln counterparts, and so far, only a neodymium (Nd) complex has been reported showing a small magnetic hysteresis at 2 K. Here, we report a low-coordination praseodymium (Pr) complex, namely, Pr@C81N, featuring a non-Kramers trivalent Pr ion entrapped within an azafullerene cage and behaving as the first Pr-based S

Comparing magnetic resonance enterography and endoscopy findings to the motility of magnetic resonance imaging in pediatric Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can evaluate bowel motility in children with Crohn's disease. As inflammation increases, motility decreases. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to show that quantitative MRI correlates with magnetic resonance enterography (MRE). We hypothesize that the motility score will inversely correlate with the Endoscopic Biopsy Acute Histologic Inflammatory Score (eAIS), the Crohn's Disease Endoscopic Index of Severity (CDEIS) score, and the MR Index of Activity (MaRIA) score. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 50 pediatric patients w

Thin Films of BaM Hexaferrite with an Inclined Orientation of the Easy Magnetization Axis: Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties.

Thin (~50 nm thick) BaM hexaferrite (BaFe12O19) films were grown on (1-102) and (0001) cut α-Al2O3 (sapphire) substrates via laser molecular beam epitaxy using a one- or two-stage growth protocol. The advantages of a two-stage protocol are shown. The surface morphology, structural and magnetic properties of films were studied using atomic force microscopy, reflected high-energy electron diffraction, three-dimensional X-ray diffraction reciprocal space mapping, powder X-ray diffraction, magneto-optical, and magnetometric methods. Annealed BaFe12O19/Al2O3 (1-102) structures consist of close-pack

Harnessing magnetism: evaluation of safety, tolerance and feasibility of magnetic kidney stone retrieval in vivo in porcine models.

The primary objective of urolithiasis therapy is complete stone removal and highest stone-clearance rates possible to minimize recurrence. A novel approach that employs a magnetic suspension and a magnetic probe for the passive collection and removal of small residual fragments was developed. This study assessed the feasibility of this system in porcine models. Five female domestic pigs underwent retrograde intrarenal surgery under general anaesthesia to assess the new magnetic system. Pre-analysed human calculi were endoscopically inserted and comminuted using lithotripsy. The magnetic suspen

Magnetically Guided Synthesis of Anisotropic Porous Carbons toward Efficient CO2 Capture and Magnetic Separation of Oil.

Conventional synthetic strategies do not allow one to impart structural anisotropy into porous carbons, thus leading to limited control over their textural properties. While structural anisotropy alters the mechanical properties of materials, it also introduces an additional degree of directionality to increase the pore connectivity and thus the flux in the designed direction. Accordingly, in this work the structure of porous carbons prepared from resorcinol-formaldehyde gels has been rendered anisotropic by integrating superparamagnetic colloids to the sol-gel precursor solution and by applyi

The effect of magnetic guiding BMSCs on hypoxic-ischemic brain damage via magnetic resonance imaging evaluation.

Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) is a critical disease in pediatric neurosurgery with high mortality rate and frequently leads to neurological sequelae. The role of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in neuroprotection has been recognized. However, using the imaging methods to dynamically assess the neuroprotective effects of BMSCs is rarely reported. In this study, BMSCs were isolated, cultured and identified. Flow cytometry assay had shown the specific surface molecular markers of BMSCs, which indicated that the cultivated cells were purified BMSCs. The results demonstrated that

Accessing new magnetic regimes by tuning the ligand spin-orbit coupling in van der Waals magnets.

Van der Waals (VdW) materials have opened new directions in the study of low dimensional magnetism. A largely unexplored arena is the intrinsic tuning of VdW magnets toward new ground states. Chromium trihalides provided the first such example with a change of interlayer magnetic coupling emerging upon exfoliation. Here, we take a different approach to engineer previously unknown ground states, not by exfoliation, but by tuning the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of the nonmagnetic ligand atoms (Cl, Br, I). We synthesize a three-halide series, CrCl3 - x - y Br x I y , and map their magnetic properti

Transcranial magnetic stimulation and functional magnet resonance imaging evaluation of adductor spasmodic dysphonia during phonation.

BACKGROUND: Reduced intracortical inhibition is a neurophysiologic finding in focal dystonia that suggests a broader problem of impaired cortical excitability within the brain. A robust understanding of the neurophysiology in dystonia is essential to elucidate the pathophysiology of the disorder and develop new treatments. The cortical silent period (cSP) is a reliable, non-invasive method to measure intracortical inhibition in the primary motor cortex associated with a muscle of interest. In adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD), cSP of the laryngeal motor cortex (LMC) which directly correspond

Radio-Frequency Coil Array for Improved Concurrent Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

PURPOSE: To perform concurrent TMS-fMRI on difficult targets, such as the occipital lobe. METHODS: a 3-channel flexible, thin RF coil was constructed that allows for whole head image coverage without impeding TMS placement. A custom MR-safe patient table which mates with typical 3T MR scanners was constructed for the purpose of face-down subject positioning to allow for access to posterior TMS targets. To counterbalance the loading effect of the TMS coil on the RF coil circuits "Dummy Loads" are introduced, which mimic the loading conditions of the TMS coil when it is not present. RESULTS: t
