Sport Participation for People with Disabilities: Exploring the Potential of Reverse Integration and Inclusion through Wheelchair Basketball.

Reverse integration is defined as the inclusion of able-bodied people into disability sport. For decades, there have been movements towards integrating people with a disability in mainstream society. There has been a lack of research supporting the movement of able-bodied involvement in disability sport, known as reverse integration. In this study, the real-life experiences and motivations of 11 national wheelchair basketball players (four able-bodied and seven with a disability) were explored, identifying the potential of reverse integration and what influenced the players involvement. Themat

[Epidemiological characteristics of the pediatric population of cochlear implant users in St. Petersburg].

An epidemiological analysis of the pediatric population of cochlear implant (CI) users in St. Petersburg, the second largest metropolis of Russian Federation, was carried out. CI users are 14% of the total number of hearing impaired children, and 26% of children with hearing devices. Only 43% of children who are candidates for cochlear implantation in according to audiological criteria use CI. Since 2012, unilateral cochlear implantation has been carried out for all children in need - their annual number ranges from 25 to 45. Bilateral implantation, mostly sequential with an interval of 1-3 ye

Student Self-Efficacy and Aptitude to Participate in Relation to Perceived Functioning and Achievement in Students in Secondary School With and Without Disabilities.

School-based Physical Education (PE) is important, especially to students with disabilities whose participation in physical activities out of school is limited. The development over time of participation-related constructs in relation to students' perceived functioning and achievement is explored. Students in mainstream inclusive secondary school self-rated their PE-specific self-efficacy, general school self-efficacy, aptitude to participate in PE, and perceived physical and socio-cognitive functional skills at two timepoints, year 7 and year 9. Results were compared between three groups of s

Why is late-life disability declining?

CONTEXT: Late-life disability has been declining in the United States since the 1980s. This study provides the first comprehensive investigation into the reasons for this trend. METHODS: The study draws on evidence from two sources: original data analyses and reviews of existing studies. The original analyses include trend models of data on the need for help with daily activities and self-reported causes of such limitations for the population aged seventy and older, based on the National Health Interview Surveys from 1982 to 2005. FINDINGS: Increases in the use of assistive and mainstream te

Autistic spectrum disorders 2: diagnosis and management.

As many as six in every 1000 children may be affected by an autistic spectrum disorder. The previous article of this two-part series discussed the distinction between autism, Asperger's syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder, and examined the assessment process. This article looks at potential differential diagnoses that must be considered, as well as conditions associated with autism. Many theories about the causes of autism have been suggested, including the MMR vaccine. Recent research has suggested that there is no link between the vaccine and autism. There is no cure for autism, bu

Cochlear Implants in Aviators.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implants (CIs) have revolutionized the management of deafness. Combined with newborn screening, children are being identified earlier and rehabilitated with CIs, allowing them to be mainstreamed in the education system. The aviation community has begun to see a new generation of pilots who are now seeking careers in aviation with the use of CI. METHODS: A literature review using the Ovid Medline database was conducted. A search for airmen within the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airman Medical Certification System with a diagnostic code for CIs was reviewed up t

Best Practice Recommendations for Conducting and Reporting Controlled Trials in Clinical Hypnosis Research.

There is an abundance of outcomes research for clinical hypnosis showing promising results. Nonetheless, hypnosis is still underutilized in clinical care. For a behavioral intervention to enter mainstream clinical care, efficacy needs to be demonstrated with exceptionally high quality of evidence, and its reporting needs to be complete and sufficiently clear to enable replication and clinical use. The present article provides best practice guidelines formulated by the Task Force for Establishing Efficacy Standards for Clinical Hypnosis for conducting and reporting clinical hypnosis research.Th

Community-based breast cancer intervention program for older African American women in beauty salons.

African American women are at high risk for morbidity and mortality from breast cancer. African American women ages 50 and older have been a difficult group to reach through conventional breast cancer intervention programs. Cultural and health beliefs that differ from mainstream society are reported to be factors contributing to the low rates of breast screening among this group. In addition to these attitudinal factors, older African American women are disproportionately represented among uninsured and under-insured Americans. As a result, cost becomes a barrier to mammography screening for m

Moderating Effects of Stigma-related Barriers on Ethnic Identity Dimensions and Mental Health Service Utilization among Black Adults in the US.

BACKGROUND: Significant disparities in mental health service utilization persist, particularly among Black adults in the United States. We focused on ethnic identity dimensions of centrality and assimilation and addressed their distinction from the commonly used term of acculturation. METHOD: This study utilized gamma regression to examine the relationship between ethnic identity and help-seeking behavior within a large sample of Black adults (N = 1,117) and investigated the moderating effects of stigma-related barriers on this relationship. RESULTS: The findings revealed statistically signi

Satisfaction with life in a sample of prelingually deaf cochlear implant users with a good command of spoken Polish as the primary language.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the level of satisfaction with life (SWL) in a group of cochlear implant (CI) users who had been prelingually deaf but were orally educated. They had received one or two CIs (as a child, adolescent, or adult) and were highly competent Polish speakers. This study looked at three factors that may affect SWL - psychosocial, deafness/hearing and communication related, and sociodemographic. METHODS: The participants were prelingually deaf CI users who had learned highly competent spoken Polish as their primary language. They had been educated in mainstream or

"It All Makes Us Feel Together": Young People's Experiences of Virtual Group Music-Making During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We know little about the psychological experiences of children and young people who have participated in virtual group music-making during the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Adopting a mixed-methods design, we worked across three music education hubs in the UK, with a total 13 virtual music groups. These included a range of mainstream ensembles, inclusive ensembles targeting young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities, and inclusive music production spaces, targeting young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Reported progress in intra- and inter-personal

Improving health behaviours and attitudes around podoconiosis in Northern Western Ethiopia: Implementation and intervention effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Assessing how interventions are implemented is essential to understanding why interventions may or may not achieve their intended outcomes. There is little evidence about how interventions against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are being implemented. Guided by the Context and Implementation of Complex Intervention (CICI) framework, we evaluated an ongoing intervention against the NTD podoconiosis to examine the implementation process and its effectiveness in terms of improving shoe wearing practices, increasing knowledge and reducing stigmatizing attitudes towards podoconiosis

Use of health care services among people with Covid-19 symptoms in the first pandemic peak in France.

In France, the first pandemic peak fell disproportionately on the most disadvantaged, as they were overrepresented in contaminations and in developing severe forms of the virus. At that time, and especially during lockdown, the French healthcare system was severely disrupted and limited. The issue of social differences in the use of healthcare by people experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 arose. Based on a random sample of 135,000 persons, we selected respondents who reported Covid-19-like symptoms (cough, fever, dyspnea, anosmia and/or ageusia) during the first lockdown (n = 12,422). The aim of

Adolescents born with spina bifida: experiential worlds and biopsychosocial developmental challenges.

The author used phenomenological (interpretive) ethnography to investigate the experience of physical disability and its attached meanings in relation to self, world, and other for adolescents born with spina bifida. Multiple in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 late-stage adolescents (aged 18-24 years). Analysis of their narrative accounts illustrated commonalities with respect to the biopsychosocial impact of living with the physical disability of spina bifida. The theme, "Experiencing self as dissimilar other" is reported upon. Findings imply that youth born with spina bifida face bio
