Enhanced immobility of Pb(II) during ferrihydrite-Pb(II) coprecipitates aging impacted by malic acid or phosphate.

Metastable ferrihydrite is omnipresent in environments and can influence the fate of Pb(II) during ferrihydrite transformation. Ferrihydrite is rarely pure and often coexists with impurities, which may influence the mineralogical changes of ferrihydrite and Pb(II) behavior. In this work, we investigated the effect of malic acid or phosphate on Pb(II)-ferrihydrite coprecipitates (Fh-Pb) transformation and the subsequent fate of Pb(II) during the 10-day aging of Fh-Pb. Results showed that both malic acid and phosphate retarded Fh-Pb transformation and prevented the release of Pb(II) from Fh-Pb b

Acetaldehyde metabolism by wine lactic acid bacteria.

Acetaldehyde is a volatile flavor compound present in many fermented foods and is important in the production of red and white wines. Nine strains of the genera Lactobacillus and Oenococcus were able to metabolize acetaldehyde in a resting cell system, whereas two Pediococcus strains were not. Acetic acid and ethanol were produced from its degradation. A Lactobacillus and an Oenococcus were able to degrade SO(2)-bound acetaldehyde, as well. A coincubation of resting cells of Saccharomyces bayanus Première Cuvée and Oenococcus oeni Lo111 showed that strain Lo111 metabolized acetaldehyde produce

Extracellular release by Trichomonas vaginalis of a NADP+ dependent malic enzyme involved in pathogenicity.

This report presents evidence showing that Trichomonas vaginalis releases in the extracellular environment a functional form of NADP(+)-dependent malic enzyme. The protein which is likely responsible for the oxidative decarboxilase activity had already been identified in previous studies as P65, one of the five adhesive proteins of the protozoan. The same protein had also been described as AP65 by other authors, which identified it as one of the four surface proteins specifically responsible for binding of the parasite to the target cell in a ligand-receptor fashion. Gene characterization stud

Effects of almitrine on the release of catecholamines from the rabbit carotid body in vitro.

1. Almitrine increases ventilation by stimulating the carotid body (CB) arterial chemoreceptors but neither its intraglomic target nor its mechanism of action have been elucidated. 2. We have tested the hypothesis that chemoreceptor cells are targets for almitrine by studying its effects on the release of 3H-catecholamines in an in vitro rabbit CB preparation. 3. It was found that almitrine (0.3 and 1.5 x 10(-6) M; i.e. 0.2 and 1 mg ml-1) increases the resting release of 3H-catecholamines from CBs (previously loaded with [3H]-tyrosine) incubated in a balanced 95% O2/5% CO2-equilibrated solutio

The early metabolic cardiac targets of empagliflozin during the development of heart failure, independent of SGLT2 inhibition.

BACKGROUND & PURPOSE: Cardiac metabolic changes are known early drivers of heart failure (HF). Recent preclinical research showed that protection against HF by sodium glucose transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) is independent of SGLT2 inhibition. Here, we unravel the SGLT2-independent metabolic effects of SGLT2i during early HF, to shed light on the early cardiac metabolic mechanisms through which SGLT2i may confer protection against HF. METHODS: Short-term HF was induced through transverse aortic constriction (TAC) and deoxycorticosterone (DOCA) administration in WT and SGLT2 KO mice, in the p

Metabolic checkpoints in rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid Arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease affecting 0.5-1 % of the population. Despite a growing therapeutic armamentarium, RA remains incurable, and many patients suffer significant morbidity over time. The strongest genetic risk derives from HLA class II polymorphisms, implicating T cells as pathogenic drivers. Innate immune cells, e.g. monocytes and macrophages (Mⱷ) contribute to chronic tissue inflammation through an array of pro-inflammatory functions but also present antigen to autoreactive T cells. Differentiation, survival, and effector functions of both T cells

Mechanistic assessment of tolerance to iron deficiency mediated by Trichoderma harzianum in soybean roots.

AIMS: Iron (Fe) deficiency in soil is a continuing problem for soybean (Glycine max L.) production, partly as a result of continuing climate change. This study elucidates how Trichoderma harzianum strain T22 (TH) mitigates growth retardation associated with Fe-deficiency in a highly sensitive soybean cultivar. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soil TH supplementation led to mycelial colonization and the presence of UAOX1 gene in roots that caused substantial improvement in chlorophyll score, photosynthetic efficiency and morphological parameters, indicating a positive influence on soybean health. Although

Palestinian infantile visceral leishmaniasis caused by a genetic variant of Leishmania infantum belonging to a new zymodeme.

The parasites causing a Palestinian case of infantile visceral leishmaniasis (IVL) and those from four dogs from the Jenin District were identified serologically, biochemically and molecular biologically as Leishmania infantum, showing dogs act as a reservoir. The strain from the human case was distinct because of its unique 200-bp kDNA-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) component in its restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) profile after digestion with the endonuclease RsaI, and by the electrophoretic mobility of its malate dehydrogenase (MDH(140)), designating it the reference strain

[Role of oxidative processes in the realization of the adaptive mechanisms of the human placenta].

Redox reactions were studied in 217 placentas obtained after partus maturus and pathological labor (premature labor, gestoses, incompatibility by Rh antigen, uterine inertia, placentas at early therapeutic and spontaneous abortions). Several uniform alterations were observed in activities of NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase, lactate-, glutamate- and malate dehydrogenases. Increase in the activity of these enzymes was accompanied by alteration in distribution of LDH isoenzymes and by elevated formation of glutamic acid; activities of transaminases, cytochrome c and cytochrome oxidase wer

Plasma-SELEX for Acute Myocardial Infarction Biomarker Discovery and Diagnosis.

Early diagnosis of acute diseases is fundamentally constrained by the lack of chemically tractable methods for biomarker discovery directly from a complex plasma. Here, we report PSABD (plasma-SELEX-enriched aptamer-based biomarker discovery and diagnosis), a chemical platform that integrates carboxylate magnetic-bead-mediated plasma protein capture within situ aptamer SELEX, enabling molecular-recognition-driven identification of disease-associated biomarkers. With this strategy, enriched aptamers not only serve as affinity probes but also function as structurally programmable molecular handl

Behaviors of Organic Ligands and Phosphate during Biochar-Driven Nitrate Adsorption in the Presence of Low-Molecular-Weight Organic Acids.

A batch experiment was conducted to examine the behavior of nitrate, organic ligands, and phosphate in the co-presence of biochar and three common low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs). The results show that citrate, oxalate, and malate ions competed with nitrate ion for the available adsorption sites on the biochar surfaces. The removal rate of LMWOA ligands by the biochar via adsorption grew with increasing solution pH. The adsorbed divalent organic ligands created negatively charged sites to allow binding of cationic metal nitrate complexes. A higher degree of biochar surface protonat

Role of the polycarboxylic compounds in the response of Silene vulgaris to chromium.

This work aims to investigate the nature and the specific mechanisms by which polycarboxylic compounds participate in the tolerance of Silene vulgaris to Cr with special attention given to the rhizosphere system. This knowledge is important to use this species in the implementation of phytoremediation technologies in Cr-polluted soils. According to the results, chromium is chelated and mobilized by the citric and malic acids in plant tissues, while oxalic acid might participate in the reduction and chelation of Cr in the rhizosphere. At the applied doses, the response of both exudation rate an

Effects of phenobarbital on activity of mitochondrial enzymes in peripheral blood lymphocytes and oxidative phosphorylation in liver mitochondria.

Treatment with phenobarbital (30 mg/kg) for 2 weeks increased succinate dehydrogenase activity in peripheral blood lymphocytes of male rats. In 38% phenobarbital-treated rats succinate-cytochrome c oxidoreductase activity was lower than in the control due to accumulation of cells exhibiting no enzyme activity; in 44% animals this parameter was higher than in the control. The rates of state 3 respiration (oxidation substrate succinate), phosphorylation, and uncoupled respiration in liver mitochondria (oxidation substrate glutamate/malate mixture) increased after 35-day treatment with phenobarbi

Characterization of Egyptian isolates of Trichomonas vaginalis I. Isoenzyme patterns.

Three T. vaginalis isolates from Egypt were compared for their isoenzyme electrophoretic patterns on cellulose acetate. The enzymes studied were: glucose-6-dehydrogenase (G6PD); malate dehydrogenase (MDH); phosphoglucomutase (PGM); glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI); malic enzyme (ME); hexokinase (HK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The three isolates shared the same isoenzyme banding patterns of MDH; GPI; HK and LDH. Two of these isolates were similar in their banding patterns of G6PD, PGM and different from those of the third isolate. The latter was similar to one of the two isolates and dif

Effect of citrulline on post-exercise rating of perceived exertion, muscle soreness, and blood lactate levels: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Citrulline is one of the non-essential amino acids that is thought to improve exercise performance and reduce post-exercise muscle soreness. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effect of citrulline supplements on the post-exercise rating of perceived exertion (RPE), muscle soreness, and blood lactate levels. METHODS: A random effects model was used to calculate the effect sizes due to the high variability in the study design and study populations of the articles included. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov was perf
