Translational and rotational accuracy of the mandibular proximal segment after virtual surgical planning-guided bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy in skeletal Class III patients.

Previous studies on proximal segment accuracy after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy have mainly focused on condylar position. This retrospective cohort study evaluated landmark-specific and direction-sensitive proximal segment discrepancies relative to the virtual surgical plan in 108 skeletal Class III patients who underwent virtual surgical planning-guided orthognathic surgery with bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Postoperative cone-beam computed tomography data obtained within 1 week after surgery were superimposed on the planned dataset. Five landmarks were evaluated on e

Evaluation of the Lingual Splitting Patterns and the Lateral Bone Cut Ends Following Mandibular Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).

The bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is the most popular orthognathic procedure performed by maxillofacial surgeons to treat skeletal class II and class III and to correct mandibular asymmetries. The study aimed to evaluate the lingual splitting patterns and lateral bone cut end (LBCE) in bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) and their relation with the ramal thickness and the presence of impacted third molars using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). This prospective observational study included patients with mandibular prognathism who were treated with BSSO with or without Le

No differences in infections between patient-specific implants and conventional mini-plates in mandibular bilateral sagittal split osteotomy - Up to 3-year follow-up.

The use of individually designed osteotomies, combined with individually manufactured osteosynthesis material, is rapidly becoming a standard for more challenging maxillofacial surgery. The benefits of patient-specific implants (PSI) in orthognathic surgery are clear in complex cases. PSIs can enhance precision and ease up the surgical protocol. We previously reported on the benefits of PSIs as reposition and fixation systems during Le Fort I osteotomy. The aim of this study was to evaluate a cohort of 28 patients, treated with bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) and PSIs for fixation, w

Masticatory function and neurosensory disturbance after mandibular correction by bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy: a comparison between miniplate and bicortical screw rigid internal fixation.

Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy is commonly used to treat mandibular prognathism. Several fixation methods for bony segments have been described. The present study compared masticatory function and neurosensory recovery patterns after mandibular correction between two methods of rigid fixation, bicortical screw (n = 38) and monocortical miniplate (n = 32). Patients who had undergone bilateral sagittal split osteotomy for Class III malocclusion were reviewed, and masticatory function and neurosensory recovery were studied with the appropriate indicators at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperative

Evaluation of Mandibular Lingual and Foramen Location in Class I, Class II, and Class III Patients and its Significance in Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy.

The precise location of the mandibular lingual (ML) and foramen (MF) is clinically significant because they are crucial anatomic markers for the inferior alveolar nerve protection in sagittal split ramus osteotomy. To determine the position of the ML and MF among subjects with class I, class II, and class III skeletal patterns to obtain information that could be useful for interventions in mandibular ramus. A retrospective study of 324 mandibular ramus from 162 patients was performed to evaluate the distance from the MF to the occlusal plane (OP) and the distance of the ML to the MF, OP, and t

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Transverse Width of Hard Tissue and Soft Tissue After Mandibular Setback Surgery Using Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy: A Retrospective Study.

PURPOSE: Some clinicians are concerned that if an intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) is used to position the mandible posteriorly, the proximal segments should be positioned laterally to the distal segment, which could increase the transverse mandibular width, leading to esthetically unfavorable results. This study investigated short- and long-term postoperative transverse mandibular width changes in the soft and hard tissue after IVRO for mandibular prognathism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 44 patients who were treated with mandibular setback surgery using an IVRO. They

Presence of mandibular third molars during bilateral sagittal split osteotomy increases the possibility of bad split but not the risk of other post-operative complications.

Timing of third molar removal in relation to bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is controversial, especially with regard to post-operative complications. We investigated the influence of mandibular third molar presence on complications after BSSO with sagittal splitters and separators, by a retrospective record review of 251 patients (502 surgical sites). Mandibular third molars were present during surgery at 169 sites and removed at least 6 months preoperatively in 333 sites. Bad splits occurred at 3.0 % (5/169) and 1.5% (5/333) of the respective sites. Presence of mandibular third mol
