Reduction in Severe, Chronic Mid-Back Pain Following Correction of Sagittal Thoracic Spinal Alignment Using Chiropractic BioPhysics® Spinal Rehabilitation Program Following Prior Failed Treatment: A Case Report with 9-Month Follow-Up.

We present the findings of a case showing an improvement in severe, chronic mid-back pain (MBP) and disability following sagittal correction of the thoracic spine using Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP®) spinal rehabilitation with a nine-month long-term follow-up. A 40-year-old female had suffered for years and was referred for spinal rehabilitation by her physicians and physical therapist to treat her severe, chronic MBP. The symptoms had not improved despite several months of physical therapy, traditional chiropractic spinal manipulation, and pain management trigger point injections. The pain w

The Association Between Cervical Spine Manipulation and Carotid Artery Dissection: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

OBJECTIVE: Controversy surrounds the safety of cervical spine manipulation. Ischemic stroke secondary to cervical spine manipulation is a hypothesized adverse event. In Canada, the seriousness of these events and their perceived association to cervical spine manipulation has led some members of the public to call for a ban of the procedure. The primary objective of this study was to determine the incidence of internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection after cervical spine manipulation in patients who experience neck pain and its associated disorders. The secondary objective was to determine whet

Thermographic analysis of chiropractic care on the back health of Mangalarga Marchador horses.

INTRODUCTION: Poor saddle fit can cause back pain and lesions in horses, highlighting the need for preventive therapies. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of chiropractic treatment on the backs of Mangalarga Marchador horses using infrared thermography to monitor thermal changes associated with saddle-induced overload. METHODS: Physiological, environmental, thermographic, and chiropractic parameters were evaluated in 13 horses subjected to a standardized 25-min exercise session. Animals were assigned to either a control group (GC, n = 6) or a chiropractic treatment group (GT, n = 7). Asses

Retrospective review of case records of school-aged children receiving chiropractic care.

BACKGROUND: Chiropractic care is utilized in school aged children for a variety of health complaints, including headaches, postural issues, nocturnal enuresis, neurodevelopmental disorders, and back pain. Chiropractic care, with its ability to impact sensorimotor integration, motor control and the prefrontal cortex, could therefore potentially benefit school aged children. METHODS: In this retrospective case series, records of patients presenting for chiropractic care at an onsite school chiropractic clinic were reviewed. Patients underwent 12 weeks of chiropractic care and completed three qu

The cervico-ocular reflex changes following treatment in individuals with subclinical neck pain: a randomized control trial.

Individuals with subclinical neck pain (SCNP) exhibit altered cerebellar processing, likely due to disordered sensorimotor integration of inaccurate proprioceptive input. This association between proprioceptive feedback and SMI has been captured in cervico-ocular reflex (COR) differences where SCNP showed higher gain than healthy participants. Previous neurophysiological research demonstrated improved cerebellar processing in SCNP participants following a single treatment session, but it is unknown whether these neurophysiological changes transfer to cerebellar function. In a parallel group, r

A systematic review of the literature on the chiropractic care of patients with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: In addition to impacting the affected child and his/her family's quality of life, recent estimates place the lifetime cost for an individual with ASD at $3.2 million and $35 billion for the entire birth cohort. Given the clinical heterogeneity of ASD, treatment approaches are multidisciplinary including alternative therapies, particularly when no pharmaceutical agent is effective for the core symptoms of ASD. Chiropractic is a popular alternative therapy for children. A systematic review of the literature was performed to provide context for future research endeavors in this field.

Who are the chiropractic students favouring a limitless scope of practice? Exploring the relationship with personality, magical thinking, and academic achievement.

INTRODUCTION: Some chiropractors seem to have an inflated belief in the powers of spinal manipulation (SMT), for example aiming at preventing future spinal degeneration and health problems, activities that are without supporting evidence. Non-evidenced health beliefs have been shown to be associated with a tendency toward magical thinking. Holding such beliefs about SMT is associated with a limitless scope of practice (LLSoP). Recent studies have shown that "chiropractic conservatism" (ChiroCon) is also associated with such approaches. We wanted to understand ChiroCon and these attitudes towar

[Acupuncture-moxibustion combined with chiropractic therapy for adolescent psychogenic vomiting with Mallory-Weiss syndrome: a case report].

This paper reports 1 case of adolescent with psychogenic vomiting accompanied by Mallory-Weiss syndrome and antral gastritis treated with acupuncture-moxibustion combined with chiropractic therapy. The case was differentiated as disharmony of liver and stomach, and treated according to the therapeutic principle for unblocking the governor vessel, directing qi, smoothing the liver and harmonizing the stomach. The treatment was composed of acupuncture for "unblocking the governor vessel and conducting qi" and chiropractic therapy. Acupoints in acupuncture included the positive reaction points al

The impact of chiropractic care on prescription opioid use for non-cancer spine pain: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In recent studies, receipt of chiropractic care has been associated with lower odds of receiving prescription opioids and, among those already prescribed, reduced doses of opioids among patients with non-cancer spine pain. These findings suggest that access to chiropractic services may reduce reliance on opioids for musculoskeletal pain. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of chiropractic care on initiation, or continued use, of prescription opioids among patients with non-cancer spine pain. METHODS: We will search for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational st

Neck-tongue syndrome.

Neck-tongue syndrome (NTS) is a rarely reported disorder characterised by paroxysmal episodes of intense pain in the upper cervical or occipital areas associated with ipsilateral hemiglossal dysaesthesia brought about by sudden neck movement. The most likely cause of this clinical entity is a temporary subluxation of the lateral atlantoaxial joint with impaction of the C2 ventral ramus against the articular processes on head rotation. NTS is an under-recognised condition that can be debilitating for patients and challenging for the treating physicians. Here, we report a 47-year-old man who ful

Trigeminal neuralgia in wind musicians.

The author reports 3 patients with trigeminal neuralgia whose pain was triggered by musical performance. Use of the muscles of embouchure activated the trigger zone when playing the clarinet, saxophone, flute, piccolo, trombone, or whistling. In each case, the location of the trigger zone was perioral, regardless of which division of the trigeminal nerve emanated pain. Trigeminal neuralgia is a particularly disabling affliction when it occurs in wind musicians.
