Purpose To examine whether maternal cancer during pregnancy is associated with increased risks of stillbirth and infant mortality. Methods On the basis of nationwide health registers, we conducted a study of 3,947,215 singleton births in Sweden from 1973 through 2012. Exposure was defined as maternal cancer diagnosed during pregnancy (number of births = 984) or during the year after pregnancy (number of births = 2,723). We calculated incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for stillbirth and infant mortality, comparing exposed births to unexposed births. Small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and preterm births

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality is a major health problem concentrated in resource-poor regions. Accurate data on its causes using rigorous methods is lacking, but is essential to guide policy-makers and health professionals to reduce this intolerable burden. The aim of this study was to accurately describe the causes of maternal death in order to contribute to its reduction, in one of the regions of the world with the highest maternal mortality ratios.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a prospective study between October 2002 and December 2004 on the causes of maternal death in a tertiary-le…

Almost two decades after the safe motherhood initiative, maternal mortality figures remain very high in Nigeria. Very few studies are available on the features of maternal mortality in rural Nigeria. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence and causes of maternal mortality in a rural referral hospital in the Niger Delta, Nigeria. An audit of 115 consecutive maternal mortalities over a 10-year period at a rural-based tertiary hospital was undertaken. There were 5,153 deliveries and 115 maternal deaths during the study period, with a maternal mortality ratio of 2,232/100,000 li…

OBJECTIVE: Given interventions implemented in recent years to reduce maternal deaths, we sought to determine the incidence and causes of maternal deaths for 1998-2003.
METHOD: Records of public hospitals and state pathologists were reviewed to identify pregnancy-related deaths within 12 months of delivery and determine their underlying causes.
RESULTS: Maternal mortality declined (p=0.023) since surveillance began in 1981-83. The fall in direct mortality (p=0.0003) included 24% fewer hypertension deaths (introduction of clinical guidelines, reorganization of antenatal services) and 36% fewer…

A retrospective analysis of 78 maternal deaths was performed during 1991-1992 to estimate maternal mortality at the maternity unit of the main tertiary level hospital in The Gambia. The non-abortion maternal mortality ratio (MMR) was 736 per 100 000 live births. Among the direct causes, haemorrhage caused most deaths (24%), followed by hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) (21%). Sepsis was the main cause of death in 15%. Anaemia led among the indirect causes of death (8%) and was a co-factor in 41% of all deaths. Substandard care factors other than medical causes were determined involving…

The maternal mortality in Bahrain during the 10-year period, 1977-1986, was 33.9 per 100,000 livebirths; the second 5-year period showed a significant reduction (26.9) compared to the first 5-year period (42.3). Haemorrhage, pulmonary embolism, hypertensive diseases of pregnancy and infection were the main causes of maternal mortality. Sickle cell disease was found to be an underlying cause in about one third of the maternal deaths. Avoidable factors were present in 38% of the cases, the majority being due to the failure of the patients to seek medical care or follow medical advice. Health edu…

We investigated perinatal and maternal deaths occurring among women who were members of a religious group in Indiana; these women received no prenatal care and gave birth at home without trained attendants. Members of the religious group had a perinatal mortality rate three times higher and a maternal mortality rate about 100 times higher than the statewide rates. These findings suggest that, even in the United States, women who avoid obstetric care have a greatly increased risk of perinatal and maternal death.
