[Cholesterol granuloma in paranasal sinus. An unfrequent pseudotumor in maxillary sinuses].

The cholesterol granuloma is well known in the middle ear, in the mastoid antrum and the air cells of temporal bone, mostly related to a chronic infectious process. There are other localizations such as the pleura, lung, pericardium, kidneys, arterial wall, nerves, brain, testicles, lymphatic ganglion and in the paranasals sinuses. Its localization in the mediofacial area is very unfrequent, having only been described 44 cases up to the year 2002. We present a 42 year-old patient, who required surgical treatment because of a increase in the volume of area her left facial of one month's old. It

[Maxillary fungal sinusitis by Zygomicetos. Report of a case in an immunocompetent patient].

We report the clinical case of a 36 years old female without significant previous history who was diagnosed with an acute maxillary sinusitis with not responding to antibiotic treatment. After her admission we asked for a CT which showed an occupation in the left maxillary sinus with a calcified area inside suggesting a mycetoma. The patient was operated by Functional Endoscopy Sinusal Surgery (FESS) plus Caldwell-Luc techniques sending the obtained sample for microbiological study, that was reported as sinusal mycosis by Zygomicetos. The postsurgical evolution was satisfactory.

Diagnostic value of HRCT and 3DCT in the assessment of chronic maxillary sinusitis.

In a group of 37 patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis in whom CT examination had been performed diagnostic value of secondary spatial reconstructions and high-resolution sections was analysed. It was found that the supplementation of standard CT examination with high-resolution sections and spatial pictures increases diagnostic possibilities in the assessment of maxillary sinusitis as for recognising, differentiating and determining anatomical etiologic factors.

[Clinical and biochemical aspects in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis with antioxidants].

A trial has been made of traditional versus antioxidant treatment of acute maxillary sinusitides. The patients were injected a mixture consisting of 4 ml emulsion of 10% dibunol liniment and 2 ml of 5% ascorbic acid made by dilution of 10 g dibunol in 30 ml sterile 0.5% novocaine solution. The mixture was introduced into the sinuses 2 times a day, in one of the study groups it was combined with 500,000 U of ampicillin in cases of purulent sinusitis. In catarrhal form the mixture was injected once a day without the antibiotic. Control groups received 4 ml dioxidine in a single dose after the si

Pneumatization of the paranasal sinuses (maxillary and frontal) in cleft lip and palate.

A comparative study of roentgenograms of the paranasal sinuses between 37 patients with cleft lip and palate and 37 control subjects of the same age group was done using a planimeter. The results indicate that there is no statistical difference in the sizes. The paranasal sinuses increased in size with age in patients as well as in control subjects.

[Endoscopy of the maxillary sinus. Diagnostic and therapeutic value in chronic sinusitis].

Sinus endoscopy is now well established as an essential exploratory procedure for the study of rhinosinus affections. By direct endocavitary … evacuating and aerating properties relieving ostial dyspermeability, the principal cause of chronic maxillary sinusitis. Diagnostic and therapeutic features in this particularly frequent affection are discussed with respect to the use of endoscopy.

[Subdural empyema as a complication of maxillary sinusitis (description of 3 cases)].

The authors report 3 cases of subdural empyema with different course and outcome. In all of them subdural empyema developed as a complication of chronic maxillary sinusitis. In the first case a coexistent brain abscess was the cause of death. In the second case operation carried out when the patient was in extremely severe condition failed to prevent death since the diagnosis had been made too late. Complete recovery was obtained in the third case owing to early clinical diagnosis confirmed with angiography, followed by early surgical treatment of the primary focus and early craniotomy. The im…

Pathophysiology of Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis Arising from Marginal Periodontitis with Ascending Pulpitis.

OBJECTIVE: Ascending pulpitis refers to inflammation of the dental pulp that progresses from the apical region toward the coronal portion of the tooth. The purpose of this study is to investigate novel insights into the pathophysiology of OMS arising from marginal periodontitis with ascending pulpitis. METHODS: Five adult patients diagnosed with OMS arising from marginal periodontitis were examined. Histological analysis of the causative teeth of OMS was conducted. RESULTS: No coronal lesions (e.g., dental carious lesions) were observed in the causative teeth of OMS. Histologically, the peri

Automated detection of maxillary sinus opacifications compatible with sinusitis from CT images.

BACKGROUND: Sinusitis is a commonly encountered clinical condition that imposes a considerable burden on the healthcare systems. A significant number of maxillary sinus opacifications are diagnosed as sinusitis, often overlooking the precise differentiation between cystic formations and inflammatory sinusitis, resulting in inappropriate clinical treatment. This study aims to improve diagnostic accuracy by investigating the feasibility of differentiating maxillary sinusitis, retention cysts, and normal sinuses. METHODS: We developed a deep learning-based automatic detection model to diagnose m…

Correlations between Dental Implant Infectious Pathologies and Maxillary Sinusitis: A Review Article.

(1) Background: The demands of patients for aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of edentulous areas led to the use of dental implants as therapeutic means on an increasingly large scale. This aspect determined the appearance of some infectious pathologies with a peri-implant starting point that can be complicated by various sinus diseases. The purpose of this review article is to synthesize the existing information in the specialized literature regarding the existing correlations between peri-implant and maxillary sinusitis. (2) Methods: The articles published in five databases were resear…

Dental assessment of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, aided by Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVES: To identify tooth diseases as potential causative factors in the development of maxillary sinus lesions, with the aid of clinical examination combined with Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), in the patients with persistent sinus-like ailments, unresponsive to routine treatment offered by otolaryngologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 44 patients with suspected odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, a dental examination with tooth vitality test was carried out, in conjunction with CBCT. The study involved 29 women and 15 men (age range 19-69 years, mean age 43 (SD = 13.9) years). RESUL…

Comparison of bacterial maxillary sinus cultures between odontogenic sinusitis and chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is distinct from other forms of rhinosinusitis. Diagnosing ODS can be challenging because of nonspecific clinical presentations and underrepresentation in the literature. The purpose of this study was to compare maxillary sinus bacterial cultures between patients with ODS and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), to determine whether certain bacteria are associated with ODS. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-control study of 276 consecutive patients from August 2015 to August 2019 who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for bacterial ODS, CR

Long-Term Effectiveness of Balloon Catheter Sinuplasty in Pediatric Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis.

The objective of our study was to assess the long-term effectiveness of balloon catheter sinuplasty in the treatment of pediatric chronic maxillary sinusitis following failed first-line medical and surgical management with adenoidectomy. Pediatric patients younger than 12 years were reviewed for having failed previous adenoidectomy and undergone a balloon catheter sinuplasty between August 2006 and March 2011 for chronic rhinosinusitis. Demographic data and clinical characteristics were recorded in patients who met inclusion criteria. Outcomes were assessed by need for functional endoscopic si…
