The Effects of Tobacco Coverage in the Public Communication Environment on Young People's Decisions to Smoke Combustible Cigarettes.

In today's complex media environment, does media coverage influence youth and young adults' (YYA) tobacco use and intentions? We conceptualize the "public communication environment" and effect mediators, then ask whether over time variation in exogenously measured tobacco media coverage from mass and social media sources predicts daily YYA cigarette smoking intentions measured in a rolling nationally representative phone survey (N = 11,847 on 1,147 days between May 2014 and June 2017). Past week anti-tobacco and pro-tobacco content from Twitter, newspapers, broadcast news, Associated Press, an

Understanding and Reducing Appearance Anxiety for Social Media Users: A Study Using Ecological Momentary Assessment and Ecological Momentary Intervention.

Appearance anxiety for social media users (AASMU) is emotional distress linked to social media use (SMU), negatively affecting mental and physical health. However, little is known about the dynamic relationship between AASMU and SMU, and effective interventions. Study 1 used Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) with 206 participants completing daily surveys for 20 days. Dynamic structural equation modeling (DSEM) revealed that AASMU tended to persist from 1 day to the next (β = 1.45) and that higher levels of AASMU and SMU often occurred together on the same day (β = 2.57). A higher level of

Predatory marketing and false health promotion on social media: risk pathways in diet, fitness, and supplement communication.

As the commercial circulation of health content on social media continues to intensify, large volumes of fitness, nutrition, and wellness information lacking scientific grounding are repeatedly pushed to users, heightening the likelihood that psychologically susceptible individuals internalize distorted beliefs and engage in harmful practices. This study examines the mechanism through which exposure to such content influences psychological vulnerability, strengthens false health beliefs, shapes risky behavioral choices, and ultimately affects perceived health status. Using 482 valid survey res

A Media Analysis of Debates on Extended Alcohol Trading Hours Changes in Scotland.

INTRODUCTION: Between 2017 and 2019, different policy processes in two large Scottish cities led to local authorities granting licences for later on-premises alcohol trading hours. As a part of a wider mixed methods study, we examine news media reporting of these licencing changes to understand the content and progression of arguments at the time they were being discussed through to, and after, implementation. METHODS: Forty-four news articles were identified through online searches (published 01/01/2015-01/01/2023) supplemented with hand searches of local publications. A qualitative thematic

The role of attention problems and impulsiveness in media violence effects on aggression.

Previous research has established media violence as a causal risk factor for aggressive behavior. Several theoretical mechanisms have been i … ait anger, and trait hostility). Attention problems and impulsiveness were uniquely related to both media exposure (total weekly hours and violent content) and aggression. Attention problems and impulsiveness were particularly related to impulsive (as opposed to premeditated) aggression. These results suggest that attention problems and impulsiveness may play an …

Prevention of Contrast and Radiation Injury During Coronary Angiography and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, we provide a summary of the recently published literature on various methods of preventing contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) and radiation-related injuries associated with cardiac catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). RECENT FINDINGS: The overall reported incidence of CI-AKI is declining, primarily due to adaptation of a standardized definition for CI-AKI as well as implementation of pre-procedural protocols to prevent or decrease the risk of CI-AKI. The implementation of increasing awareness and establishing radiation pro

Cessation Outcomes Among Quitline Callers in Three States During a National Tobacco Education Campaign.

INTRODUCTION: Antismoking mass media campaigns, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Tips from Former Smokers (Tips) campaign, increase the number of tobacco users calling tobacco quitlines. Few studies have investigated long-term tobacco use cessation for callers during antismoking media campaigns. Studies have suggested that callers during campaigns may be less committed to quitting and have lower quit rates. This study examines tobacco user cessation outcomes 7 months after quitline enrollment during the 2012 Tips campaign (March 19 through June 10, 2012). METHODS: We a

Representation of commercial and traditional tobacco on social media: deconstructing historical narratives to address the Indigenous youth tobacco epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco has significant cultural and spiritual uses in many Indigenous communities. The tobacco industry has long appropriated American Indian or Alaska Native (AI/AN or Indigenous) cultural imagery in print media and signage to advertise commercial tobacco products. In the internet era, little is known about the representation of commercial tobacco product advertising using AI/AN terms and images on social media. METHODS: With structured platform searches, custom data collection approaches and a combination of manual content analysis and natural language processing approaches (NL

Digital Engagement and Sleep Dysregulation in Young Adults: A Narrative Review.

Digital technology is embedded in daily life, and growing evidence suggests that evening and bedtime screen engagement may disrupt sleep in young adults. Associations appear stronger for bedtime exposure and problematic or addiction-like patterns of use than for total screen time alone. This review aims to synthesize current evidence on the relationship between smartphone and social media use and sleep outcomes in young adults, with particular attention to the timing of device use, problematic digital engagement, and psychological or behavioral factors that may influence sleep. A narrative lit

High-flow priapism: a combined interventional approach with angiography and colour Doppler.

Traumatic high-flow priapism caused by a pathologic influx from lacerated arteries to the cavernous bodies is usually treated by transcatheter arterial embolisation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a combined interventional approach with intraoperative perineal colour Doppler ultrasound (US) while performing the embolisation procedure. Our aim was to reduce radiation exposure and application of iodinised contrast media. To achieve an optimal position of the angiography catheter directly before or in the fistula, instead of several x-ray examinations with contrast media, a perineal co

A community-based approach to disseminate health information on the hazards of prenatal mercury exposure in Brooklyn, NY.

Exposure to mercury (Hg) in utero can have neurotoxic effects on the developing fetus. Mercury exposure in women of childbearing age has been associated with frequent fish consumption, coastal proximity, foreign birth, and exposure during ritualistic practices. The aim of this study was to identify culturally-appropriate strategies to disseminate messages on the hazards of in utero Hg exposure in fertile and pregnant women in a predominantly urban immigrant community in Flatbush, Brooklyn, following findings from a recent study on mercury exposure in this community.
