Radiation Exposure Characteristics among Healthcare Workers: Before and After Japan's Ordinance Revision.

Radioactive materials and ionizing radiation have both medical value and disease risks, necessitating radiation dose measurement and risk reduction strategies. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) lowered the lens of the eye exposure limit, leading to Japan's revised "Ionizing Radiation Ordinance." However, the effects on radiation exposure in medical settings and compliance feasibility remain unclear. To examine the impact of the revision to the "Ionizing Radiation Ordinance" and use it for measures to reduce exposure to radiation, a comprehensive analysis was conduc

Hospitalizations and inpatient resource consumption of patients suffering from chronic disease - Past trend and forecast for Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases are an increasing burden for Swiss healthcare. Demographic change aggravates the problem, with an ageing, multi-morbid population increasing the need for care while also depleting the healthcare workforce. Originally developed to assess the structural quality of and access to primary care, Potentially Avoidable Hospitalizations (PAHs) are an OECD-metric employed as an indicator of inpatient burden for various chronic diseases. So far, evidence on future PAH-burden remains limited. AIMS: (1) To assess the evolution of PAHs and associated resources (bed capacities,

An assessment of the potential impact of eugenol on multidrug-resistant pathogens.

Multi-drug resistance is the ability of some microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, to tolerate the effects of numerous medications. This phenomenon decreases the efficacy of current therapies, which causes longer illnesses and higher mortality rates. As a result, it presents an enormous threat to the healthcare sector. Research and countermeasures are of vital importance to address this global health problem, as the development of multi-drug resistance is frequently associated with inappropriate use of antibiotics or prolonged use. Our objective is to find the medicine that effectively

Space motion sickness: A common neurovestibular dysfunction in microgravity.

This article presents a review of the current findings related to neurovestibular physiology, aetiology, and proposed theories on space motion sickness (SMS) during acute and sustained exposure to microgravity. The review discusses the available treatment options including medication and nonpharmacological countermeasure methods that help to prevent the development of SMS in weightlessness. Ground-based simulations using virtual reality, flight simulations, and Barany's chairs can be applied to study SMS and demonstrate its signs and symptoms to space crew members. Space motion sickness has be

A Framework for Assessing Viral Pathogens: A Key Element of the BARDA Emerging Infectious Diseases Strategy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the need for nations to prepare more effectively for emerging infectious diseases. Preparing for these threats requires a multifaceted approach that includes assessing pathogen threat, building flexible capabilities for rapid medical countermeasure (MCM) development, and exercising, maintaining, and improving those response capabilities. The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) promotes the advanced development of MCMs in response to natural and manmade threats. In this article, the authors describe a BARDA threat assessment tool tha

Defining spaceflight associated dry eye syndrome (SADES): Mechanisms, complications, and countermeasures.

There is a high prevalence of dry eye-related symptoms among astronauts during spaceflight. We propose naming this phenomenon: Spaceflight Associated Dry Eye Syndrome (SADES). In this study, we review the potential mechanisms of dry eye in the spaceflight environment, categorizing them into external (radiation, environmental hazards) and microgravity-related (meibum outflow) mechanisms. One key mechanism is that microgravity impedes the secretion of meibum, the primary contributor to the tear film lipid layer. SADES may impact the ocular surface due to the positive feedback loop of inflammatio

The Single Amino Acid Change of R516K Enables Efficient Generation of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus-Based Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Reporter Virus.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a medically important tick-borne virus, causing severe hemorrhagic diseases in humans. There are no approved vaccines and therapeutics for CCHFV infection. The study of CCHFV authentic virus requires biosafety level 3 facilities, hindering the research and development of antivirals. Here we report the generation of a recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) bearing both CCHFV glycoprotein precursor (GPC) and EGFP reporter (rVSV-CCHFV-GFP). We also find that the acquisition of an unexpected single R516K mutation in the GPC protein enables the

An Engineered Human-Antibody Fragment with Fentanyl Pan-Specificity That Reverses Carfentanil-Induced Respiratory Depression.

The opioid overdose crisis primarily driven by potent synthetic opioids resulted in more than 500,000 deaths in the US over the last 20 years. Though naloxone, a short-acting medication, remains the primary treatment option for temporarily reversing opioid overdose effects, alternative countermeasures are needed. Monoclonal antibodies present a versatile therapeutic opportunity that can be tailored to synthetic opioids and help prevent post-treatment renarcotization. The ultrapotent analog carfentanil is especially concerning due to its unique pharmacological properties. With this in mind, we

Chelation Model Validation: Modeling of a Plutonium-238 Inhalation Incident Treated with DTPA at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Accidental inhalation of plutonium at the workplace is a non-negligible risk, even when rigorous safety standards are in place. The intake and retention of plutonium in the human body may be a source of concern. Thus, if there is a suspicion of a significant intake of plutonium, medical countermeasures such as chelation treatment may be administered to the worker. The present work aimed to interpret the bioassay data of a worker involved in an inhalation incident due to a glovebox breach at Los Alamos National Laboratory's plutonium facility. The worker was treated with intravenous injections …

Therapeutic antibodies as a treatment option for dengue fever.

Dengue fever is the most prevalent mosquito-borne viral disease globally with about 100 million cases of acute dengue annually. Severe dengue infection can result in a life-threatening illness. In the absence of either a licensed vaccine or antiviral drug against dengue, therapeutic antibodies that neutralize dengue virus (DENV) may serve as an effective medical countermeasure against severe dengue. However, therapeutic antibodies would need to effectively neutralize all four DENV serotypes. It must not induce antibody-dependent enhancement of DENV infection in monocytes/macrophages through Fc

TO-207 Mitigates Radiation-Induced Hematopoietic Injury in a Murine Model of Lethal Total-Body Irradiation.

INTRODUCTION: Ionizing radiation exposure can cause acute radiation syndrome (ARS) with life-threatening multi-organ damage. Although several hematopoietic growth factors are FDA-approved as radiation countermeasures, alternative strategies that target inflammatory mechanisms remain urgently needed. TO-207, formerly known as JTE-607, is a selective multi-cytokine inhibitor that suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion in human monocytes and macrophages. TO-207 represents a mechanistically distinct radiation mitigator; however, whether it suppresses the acute post-irradiation cytokine sur
