[Treatment of idiopathic blepharospasm with botulinum toxin A].

The preparations of botulinum toxin A--Botox and Porton were injected into the orbicular muscle of eye in 18 patients with idiopathic blepharospasm or Meige's syndrome. Improvement was achieved in 17 patients; in 10 injections should be repeated after about 8 weeks. Minor side effects declined after several days. Injection of botulinum toxin could be effective in this disease, otherwise hard to cure.

A long surviving case of Pseudomeigs' syndrome caused by Krukenberg tumor of the stomach.

Meigs syndrome is defined as the triad of benign ovarian tumor with ascites and pleural effusion that resolve after resection of the tumor. Pseudomeigs' syndrome is a serious disease characterized by malignant ovarian tumor, but ascites and hydrothorax usually reveal no malignant cells. Here, we report a 47-year-old pre-menapausal female patient with cardia cancer. Nearly 14 months after D3 dissection, she developed Krukenberg tumors on both ovaries causing a Pseudomeigs' syndrome with benign ascites and right hydrothorax, which resolved dramatically after resection of the tumors and rectouter…

Novel THAP1 gene mutations in patients with primary dystonia from southwest China.

BACKGROUND: Clinical presentation and DYT6/THAP1 mutations among Chinese patients with primary dystonia have not been well studied. METHODS: Patients with primary pure dystonia from Southwest China who did not have a mutation in DYT1 exon 5 were included in the present study. Mutations of the THAP1 gene were screened by direct sequencing. RESULTS: A total of 231 patients were examined. Cervical dystonia (58.47%) was found to be the most frequent form of focal dystonia. Novel heterozygous missense mutation [c.521A>G (p.E174G)] was found in exon 3 of the THAP1 gene in one patient and one inser

[Laryngeal dystonia--personal experience with botulin toxin treatment].

Laryngeal dystonia is a focal dystonia occurring more often than it is diagnosed. Adductor type dystonia was described in 5 patients. In 3 cases it manifested itself as blepharospasm, which later developed into Meige's syndrome. The patients were treated with botulinum toxin A injections under EMG control administering 10 i.m. into laryngeal muscles on both sides with good and very good results. There were no serious side effects.

Blepharospasm: an uncommon adverse effect caused by long-term administration of olanzapine.

BACKGROUND: Blepharospasm is one of the components of drug-induced Meige's syndrome which is reported to be caused by typical antipsychotics. Reports of blepharospasm or Meige's syndrome caused by atypical antipsychotics are rare. CASE: A 30-year-old female patient presented to psychiatry out patient department (OPD) with chief complaints of inability to keep her eyes open for long and excessive blinking for 2 months, irritation of eyes, watery discharge from eyes and photophobia for last 1 month. The patient had been taking olanzapine 10 mg, sertraline 100 mg and divalproex sodium 500 mg per

Blinking-blepharospasm after long-term neuroleptic treatment.

A patient is described who developed frequent blinking and blepharospasm after long-term treatment with trifluoperazine, whose condition improved dramatically after the cessation of the drug. The implications of this for our understanding of the manifestations and natural course of the late-onset side-effects of neuroleptic drugs are discussed. This case further supports the role of dopaminergic mechanisms in the aetiology of Meige's syndrome, which has blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia as its main manifestations.

[Treatment of blepharospasm with botulinum toxin].

Blepharospasm is a relatively frequent cranial dystonia which may be seen either alone or related to orofacial-mandibular dystonia (Meige's syndrome). In its maximum degree it can cause functional blindness.Twelve patients with blepharospasm (4 essential and 8 Meige's syndrome) who had been previously treated unsuccessfully with drugs (trihexyphenidyl, biperiden, carbamazepine, lithium, baclofen, lisuride, imipramine, clonazepam and butyrophenones) were treated for 12 months with periocular injections of botulinum toxin (BOTOX). A "low" dose of 12,5 U per eye was employed. With this dose, elev

Clinical syndromes associated with tumors of the female genital tract.

Tumors of the female genital tract may be associated with a variety of unusual clinical manifestations. Uncommon endocrine and paraendocrine syndromes include production of human chorionic gonadotropin by tumors other than those of germ cell origin, hyperthyroidism associated with struma ovarii and gestational trophoblastic disease, the carcinoid syndrome, the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, hypercalcemia, Cushing's syndrome, hypoglycemia, hypertension related to renin or aldosterone production, hyperprolactinemia, inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, and virilization associated with N

Obsessive-compulsive disorder and executive deficits in two patients with primary dystonia.

In spite of the high prevalence of behavioral and cognitive disturbances found in most basal ganglia disorders and attributed to fronto-striatal dysfunction, the existence of psychiatric and cognitive symptoms in patients with primary dystonia remains controversial. We present a 42-year-old female with primary writer's cramp and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and a 59-year-old male with Meigs syndrome, idiopathic torticollis and OCD. Both patients had mild executive dysfunction. The coexistence of psychiatric, cognitive and motor symptoms of different intensity may be explained by variabl…

The effect of nocturnal physiological sleep on various movement disorders.

Thirty-one subjects affected by different movement disorders underwent polygraphic and videotape monitoring during nocturnal sleep, to assess movement patterns during the night. It was possible to distinguish two categories of disorders according to their pattern of movements. In the largest group (Meige's syndrome, blepharospasm, amyotrophic choreoacanthocytosis, Tourette syndrome, tonic foot, hemiballism) abnormal movements were still present during sleep, but decreased in frequency and amplitude in all stages. The second group presented three syndromes (nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia, noctur

[Primary lymphedema].

Characterized by an aplasia, hypoplasia or dysplasia of the lymphatic network, the primary lymphedema takes part of rare diseases. If 10 % of cases are congenital, the majority of them are detected before 35 years, most of the time due to an intercurrent event suh as a sprain or an infection. Although rarer, some primaries lymphedemas are family forms such the syndromes of Milroy and Meige. The primary lymphedema can also be a part of more complex malformative diseases such as Klinefelter, Turner or Noonan syndromes. If the lymphatic drainage associated with the elastic contention remains the

Progress in MGJWS: A 74-Year Review of Marcus Gunn Jaw-Winking Syndrome.

We present an overview of the epidemiology and differential diagnosis of Marcus Gunn jaw-winking syndrome. We scrutinize various hypotheses regarding its etiology and pathogenesis, encompassing abnormal nerve connections, heredity factors, genetic variation, and the release hypothesis, as proposed in prior studies. Furthermore, we discuss the clinical manifestations of Marcus Gunn jaw-winking syndrome and highlight cases with exceptional clinical presentations or concurrent diseases. Moreover, we not only describe the existing surgical and nonsurgical treatments for Marcus Gunn jaw-winking syn

[Case of Parkinson's disease presenting with unique dyspneic attacks caused by oromandibular dystonia and sleep apnea syndrome].

A 79-year-old woman with a 4-year history of Parkinson's disease was admitted due to unique dyspneic attacks with cyanosis while eating. Dyspneic attacks with cyanosis occurred mainly during actions such as taking meals or rehabilitation. Due to increased tonus of the orbicularis oris muscle, she was unable to open her mouth and breathe out, and finally experienced hypoxemia as revealed by pulse oxymetry. Dystonic hypertonus was relieved by touching the mandible with the fingers, and she was able to open her mouth again. These symptom was compatible with the sensory trick. Based on these findi

Oral rehabilitation with osseointegrated implants in a patient with oromandibular dystonia with blepharospasm (Brueghel's syndrome): a patient history.

Oromandibular dystonia with blepharospasm (also known as Brueghel's syndrome, Meige's syndrome, or idiopathic orofacial dystonia) is characterized by intense and involuntary spasms of the orofacial muscles, with a frequent loss of teeth and occlusal alterations that worsen the dystonic manifestations and cause mucosal lesions that can lead to complete edentulism. The history of a patient with oromandibular dystonia who was rehabilitated with mandibular overdentures supported by endosteal implants is presented. Oral rehabilitation with implant-supported overdentures improved the situation, desp
