Modified Dead-Alive Test for the assessment of semantic and episodic memory performance of older patients with neurocognitive disorder.

The aim of this study is to provide a test that allows for evaluation of both semantic memory (SM) and episodic memory (EM). The study sought to examine psychometric characteristics of the Modified Dead-Alive Test (M-DAT) in patients with neurocognitive disorders and the healthy elderly (HE). The M-DAT consists of 45 names of celebrities who have died in the remote past (15), died in the last five years (15), and are still alive (15), and participants are asked whether they are alive or dead. The M-DAT performances of patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (DSM-5

Impaired episodic-like memory in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease is associated with hyperactivity in prefrontal-hippocampal regions.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative brain disorder with a long prodromal period. An APPNL-G-F knock-in mouse model is a preclinical model to study incipient pathologies during the early stages of AD. Despite behavioral tests revealing broad cognitive deficits in APPNL-G-F mice, detecting these impairments at the early disease phase has been challenging. In a cognitively demanding task that assessed episodic-like memory, 3-month-old wild-type mice could incidentally form and retrieve 'what-where-when' episodic associations of their past encounters. However, 3-month-old APPNL-G-F mice, co

Delayed episodic memory recall after one week is associated with executive functions and divided attention in pediatric epilepsy patients.

AIM: Recent studies suggest that although children with epilepsy may show normal learning and memory performance, accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) may become evident over time. Our study examined associations between delayed episodic memory performance (recall 1-week after learning) and executive functions. METHOD: A consecutive sample of children with a diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy with focal or generalized seizures, without morphologic or metabolic abnormalities (n = 20, mean age: 11.70 years) was compared to an IQ-matched healthy control group (n = 20, mean age: 11.55 years). Alzheimer's Disease Polygenic Scores Predict Changes in Episodic Memory and Executive Function Across 12 Years in Late Middle Age.

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is highly heritable, and AD polygenic risk scores (AD-PRSs) have been derived from genome-wide association studies. However, the nature of genetic influences very early in the disease process is still not well known. Here we tested the hypothesis that an AD-PRSs would be associated with changes in episodic memory and executive function across late midlife in men who were cognitively unimpaired at their baseline midlife assessment.. METHOD: We examined 1168 men in the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA) who were cognitively normal (CN) at their first of

Transcranial direct current stimulation over the right and left VLPFC leads to differential effects on working and episodic memory.

Previous research suggests that the left VLPFC is involved in working memory, whereas right VLPFC is involved with subsequent episodic memory. High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS) was used to test whether excitation of the left or right VLPFC would show differential effects of negative and neutral stimuli on working memory and episodic memory tasks. While receiving HD-tDCS over the left or right VLPFC or sham stimulation, participants completed a working memory task with negative and neutral distractors followed by a surprise recognition test for the distractors. Transfer of episodic self-referential memory across amnesic identities in dissociative identity disorder using the Autobiographical Implicit Association Test.

Individuals with dissociative identity disorder (DID) often report having no access to autobiographical experiences encoded by other identities. This research used the autobiographical Implicit Association Test (aIAT) to determine whether there was transfer of episodic self-referential memory events across amnesic identities. Nineteen DID individuals, 16 DID simulators, and 41 comparison participants (divided into amnesic and nonamnesic groups) engaged with an audio vignette of embarrassing scenarios to produce the experience of episodic self-referential events. Results showed transfer of epis

Subchronic glucocorticoid receptor inhibition rescues early episodic memory and synaptic plasticity deficits in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

The early phase of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by hippocampus-dependent memory deficits and impaired synaptic plasticity. Increasing evidence suggests that stress and dysregulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, marked by the elevated circulating glucocorticoids, are risk factors for AD onset. How these changes contribute to early hippocampal dysfunction remains unclear. Using an elaborated version of the object recognition task, we carefully monitored alterations in key components of episodic memory, the first type of memory altered in AD patients, in early sym

Sex differences in the effect of acute tryptophan depletion on declarative episodic memory: a pooled analysis of nine studies.

Acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) studies have shown that serotonin plays a role in learning and memory processes. In this study, we performed a pooled analysis of nine ATD studies in order to examine the nature of the memory-impairing effects of ATD and mediating factors, such as gender, age and vulnerability for disease in which disturbed serotonin was hypothesized to play a role. All studies that were used in this pooled analysis assessed declarative episodic memory using a verbal learning task paradigm. Immediate recall, delayed recall, and delayed recognition scores were examined. A total

Identification of famous faces and famous names in early Alzheimer's disease. Relationship to anterograde episodic and general semantic memory.

We assessed remote memory in 33 patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT) with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores between 17 and 30, and 30 matched controls using a Famous Faces Test and Famous Names Test designed to assess face recognition, identification and naming, and name recognition and identification, respectively, together with a range of anterograde episodic and semantic memory tests. Patients with DAT were impaired on all components of the remote memory tests, i.e. famous face recognition, identification and naming, and famous name recognition and identification. Ther

The impact of physiological arousal on negative and neutral episodic memories in young and middle-aged adults.

The relationship between physiological arousal and emotional memory enhancement is well established, but how this relationship changes with age remains unclear, especially in understudied middle-aged adults. The present study investigated the impact of physiological arousal on memory for emotional and neutral information across young adulthood and middle age. In this experiment, healthy young (ages 18-35; n = 55) and middle-aged (ages 36-59; n = 41) adults encoded scenes containing negative or neutral objects superimposed on neutral backgrounds, while their physiological arousal was recorded.

Association of serum BMP2 with delayed memory impairment in first-episode, drug-naïve schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments, particularly in the domain of memory, are core and enduring features of schizophrenia. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), members of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily, are involved in neurodevelopment and synaptic plasticity, but few studies have investigated their relevance to cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. METHODS: In this study, we measured circulating levels of BMP2, BMP9, and BMP10, and evaluated correlations with cognitive performance and psychopathological symptoms among first-episode, drug-naïve (FEDN) patients with schizophrenia. Disruption of gamma-delta relationship related to working memory deficits in first-episode psychosis.

Working memory (WM) deficits constitute a core symptom of schizophrenia. Inadequacy of WM maintenance in schizophrenia has been reported to reflect abnormalities in the excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance between pyramidal neurons and parvalbumin basket cells, which may explain alterations of the dynamics of gamma and delta oscillations. To address this issue, we assessed event-related gamma (35-45 Hz) and delta (0.5-4 Hz) oscillatory responses in a visual n-back WM task in patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) and healthy controls (HC). Periodicity analyses of oscillations were computed

Dissociation of long-term verbal memory and fronto-executive impairment in first-episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Verbal memory is frequently and severely affected in schizophrenia and has been implicated as a mediator of poor clinical outcome. Whereas encoding deficits are well demonstrated, it is unclear whether retention is impaired. This distinction is important because accelerated forgetting implies impaired consolidation attributable to medial temporal lobe (MTL) dysfunction whereas impaired encoding and retrieval implicates involvement of prefrontal cortex. METHOD: We assessed a group of healthy volunteers (n=97) and pre-morbid IQ- and sex-matched first-episode psychosis patients (n=97

Higher sodium intake is associated with episodic memory decline in cognitively unimpaired older males: A 6-year longitudinal study.

Recent evidence has suggested an association between high sodium intake and development of cognitive impairment. However, while animal studies demonstrate consistent relationships between sodium intake and cognitive impairment, this relationship remains less clear in humans. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between self-reported baseline sodium intake and cognitive decline over 72 months. Cognitively unimpaired participants (n = 1208) from the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle study were included (70.87 years of age; 41 % male). Participants completed a food frequency que

Severe PTSD symptoms magnify episodic memory-encoding deficits and amygdala-ACC attenuation during unpredictable threat in male combat veterans.

PTSD is marked by atypical coupling between emotion and learning, yet it remains unclear how threat that is situational (the presence of potential danger) shapes episodic memory. We investigated whether unpredictability-driven threat alters incidental memory formation as a function of PTSD symptom severity (PTSDss). Sixty male combat veterans underwent fMRI scanning during incidental encoding of everyday objects presented under unpredictable threat (U), predictable threat (P), or no threat (N). Threat was operationalized as potential exposure to a highly aversive sound. An unexpected recogniti

Stress-related psychopathology shapes episodic memory development in youth: Network-level brain predictors and relations with early-life stress.

BACKGROUND: Episodic memory processes and their underlying neural circuitry have been closely linked with stress-related psychopathology; however, the temporal and directional nature of these links remains unclear. Understanding how large-scale brain networks and psychopathology symptoms relate to changes in episodic memory across development is important for identifying at-risk youth and guiding developmentally-tailored interventions. METHODS: We used latent change score modeling to examine longitudinal associations between stress-related psychopathology and episodic memory in N = 3,466 yout

Associations Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Macro-Scale Glymphatic Coupling, and Episodic Memory Impairment in Middle-Aged and Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are highly prevalent among middle-aged and older adults and represent a crucial modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. Impaired brain waste clearance is hypothesized to underlie this association, but clinical evidence remains limited. We utilized global blood-oxygen-level-dependent and cerebrospinal fluid (gBOLD-CSF) coupling as a non-invasive macro-scale surrogate of fluid clearance dynamics to investigate its associations across distinct clinical phenotypes, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), insomnia, and comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISsA) a

Amyloid and tau may moderate practice effects in semantic and episodic memory in a cognitively unimpaired at-risk sample.

Previous studies in pre-clinical Alzheimer's disease have found associations between amyloid and practice effects. Additionally, studies within our research group have found associations between practice effects and cognitive tests, including language-based measures, as well as associations between language-based measures and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers. The purpose of this study is to bridge the gaps between these areas to further understand how practice effects may or may not explain additional variance between biomarker groups and to expand on current literature by incorporating tau stat

Long Term Improvement of Episodic Memory in Stroke Patients Following a Short Treatment with Prism Adaptation and Serious Games.

Episodic memory deficits are frequently encountered following stroke. Rehabilitation of these deficits is often associated with short term effects that do not persist at follow up times. Neuromodulation tools acting on alterations of excitation/inhibition dynamics could be useful for rehabilitation of episodic memory. Prism adaptation with visual field deviation ipsilateral to the affected hemisphere can specifically modulate brain excitability and lead to improvement of cognitive deficits in post-stroke patients. Here we investigated whether prism adaptation followed by digital cognitive trai
