Piracetam facilitates long-term memory for a passive avoidance task in chicks through a mechanism that requires a brain corticosteroid action.

We investigated the effects of piracetam, a nootropic, on learning and memory formation for a passive avoidance task in day-old chicks. To test for the possible cognitive-enhancing properties of piracetam, a weak learning version of this task--whereby chicks maintain a memory to avoid pecking at a bead coated in a diluted aversant for up to 10 h--was used. Post-training (5, 30 or 60 min), but not pretraining, injections of piracetam (10 or 50 mg/kg, i.p.) increased recall for the task when the chicks were tested 24 h later. Because previous studies showed that long-term memory for the passive

A prospective behavioral and imaging study exploring the impact on long-term memory of radiotherapy delivered for a brain tumor in childhood and adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Posterior fossa tumors represent two thirds of brain tumors in children. Although progress in treatment has improved survival rates over the past few years, long-term memory impairments in survivors are frequent and have an impact on academic achievement. The hippocampi, cerebellum and cerebellar-cortical networks play a role in several memory systems. They are affected not only by the location of the tumor itself and its surgical removal, but also by the supratentorial effects of complementary treatments, particularly radiotherapy. The IMPALA study will investigate the impact of i

A randomized EPIREMED protocol study on the long-term visuo spatial effects of very preterm children with a working memory deficit.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm children generally perform poorly in executive functions and particularly in working memory. Adaptive training tasks encouraging these children to work continuously on their personal working memory capacity can be very useful. Above all in preschool-age children, several cognitive training programs focused on improving working memory capacity. Cogmed is a computerized visuospatial cognitive training program that improves working memory in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The main objective is to assess the long-term effects (18 mo

Muscarinic Receptor-Dependent Long Term Depression in the Perirhinal Cortex and Recognition Memory are Impaired in the rTg4510 Mouse Model of Tauopathy.

Neurodegenerative diseases affecting cognitive dysfunction, such as Alzheimer's disease and fronto-temporal dementia, are often associated impairments in the visual recognition memory system. Recent evidence suggests that synaptic plasticity, in particular long term depression (LTD), in the perirhinal cortex (PRh) is a critical cellular mechanism underlying recognition memory. In this study, we have examined novel object recognition and PRh LTD in rTg4510 mice, which transgenically overexpress tauP301L. We found that 8-9 month old rTg4510 mice had significant deficits in long- but not short-te

The Screening of Genes Sensitive to Long-Term, Low-Level Microwave Exposure and Bioinformatic Analysis of Potential Correlations to Learning and Memory.

OBJECTIVE: To gain a better understanding of gene expression changes in the brain following microwave exposure in mice. This study hopes to reveal mechanisms contributing to microwave-induced learning and memory dysfunction. METHODS: Mice were exposed to whole body 2100 MHz microwaves with specific absorption rates (SARs) of 0.45 W/kg, 1.8 W/kg, and 3.6 W/kg for 1 hour daily for 8 weeks. Differentially expressing genes in the brains were screened using high-density oligonucleotide arrays, with genes showing more significant differences further confirmed by RT-PCR. RESULTS: The gene chip resu

Iron deficiency in infancy and neurocognitive functioning at 19 years: evidence of long-term deficits in executive function and recognition memory.

Iron deficiency in infancy negatively impacts a variety of neurodevelopmental processes at the time of nutrient insufficiency, with persistent central nervous system alterations and deficits in behavioral functioning, despite iron therapy. In rodent models, early iron deficiency impairs the hippocampus and the dopamine system. We examined the possibility that young adults who had experienced chronic, severe, iron deficiency as infants would exhibit deficits on neurocognitive tests with documented frontostriatal (Trail Making Test, Intra-/Extra-dimensional Shift, Stockings of Cambridge, Spatial

Latent toxoplasmosis impairs learning and memory yet strengthens short-term and long-term hippocampal synaptic plasticity at perforant pathway-dentate gyrus, and Schaffer collatterals-CA1 synapses.

Investigating long-term potentiation (LTP) in disease models provides essential mechanistic insight into synaptic dysfunction and relevant behavioral changes in many neuropsychiatric and neurological diseases. Toxoplasma (T) gondii is an intracellular parasite causing bizarre changes in host's mind including losing inherent fear of life-threatening situations. We examined hippocampal-dependent behavior as well as in vivo short- and long-term synaptic plasticity (STP and LTP) in rats with latent toxoplasmosis. Rats were infected by T. gondii cysts. Existence of REP-529 genomic sequence of the p

Accelerated forgetting in memory clinic patients with subjective cognitive decline: Results from a 7-day follow-up long-term retrieval assessment.

BackgroundSubjective cognitive decline (SCD) is recognized as an early indicator of preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, individuals with SCD do not exhibit cognitive impairment on standard neuropsychological tests. Accelerated forgetting (AF) has been reported in individuals with preclinical AD and is characterized by intact learning and early retention but impaired retrieval after several days. Currently, AF is not captured by standard neuropsychological testing.ObjectiveThe present study investigated recall performance in memory clinic patients with SCD, without impairment on stan

Effects of Repeated Partial Daily Social Isolation and Treadmill Exercise on Spatial Memory and Hippocampal Long-Term Potentiation in Male Rats.

OBJECTIVES: Stress-related experiences during early developmental periods may influence behavioural outcomes and hippocampal function. Social isolation is widely used as an experimental stress model, while physical exercise is considered a potential behavioural modulator. This study investigated the effects of treadmill exercise on behavioural performance and hippocampal synaptic plasticity following repeated partial daily social isolation in male rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats (postnatal day 28) were assigned to control or repeated partial daily social isolation conditions (6 h/day for 6 we

Amyloid neuropathy, tauopathy, decreased cholinergic and dopaminergic neurons, long-term memory and motor deficits, and sleep disturbance in motopsin deficient mice.

Truncating mutation in motopsin (neurotrypsin/PRSS12) gene causes an autosomal recessive non-syndromic intellectual disability. Since motopsin cleaves agrin, motopsin deficiency causes accumulation of long form agrin. Agrin binds amyloid β (Aβ) and accelerates Aβ fibril formation in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Down's syndrome (DS) exhibits AD-like neuropathological changes. Agrin also contributes to Parkinson's disease (PD). Degeneration of cholinergic neurons is relevant to AD, whereas degeneration of dopaminergic neurons causes PD and PD-associated cognitive impairment and dementia. Although t

Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory-Based Detection of Adverse Drug Reaction Posts Using Korean Social Networking Services Data: Deep Learning Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Social networking services (SNS) closely reflect the lives of individuals in modern society and generate large amounts of data. Previous studies have extracted drug information using relevant SNS data. In particular, it is important to detect adverse drug reactions (ADRs) early using drug surveillance systems. To this end, various deep learning methods have been used to analyze data in multiple languages in addition to English. OBJECTIVE: A cautionary drug that can cause ADRs in older patients was selected, and Korean SNS data containing this drug information were collected. Based

Long-term analysis of humoral responses and spike-specific T cell memory to Omicron variants after different COVID-19 vaccine regimens.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants has raised concerns about the sustainability of vaccine-induced immunity. Little is known about the long-term humoral responses and spike-specific T cell memory to Omicron variants, with specific attention to BA.4/5, BQ.1.1, and XBB.1. METHODS: We assessed immune responses in 50 uninfected individuals who received varying three-dose vaccination combinations (2X AstraZeneca + 1X Moderna, 1X AstraZeneca + 2X Moderna, and 3X Moderna) against wild-type (WT) and Omicron variants at eight months post-vaccination. Lie Recognition with Multi-Modal Spatial-Temporal State Transition Patterns Based on Hybrid Convolutional Neural Network-Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory.

Recognition of lying is a more complex cognitive process than truth-telling because of the presence of involuntary cognitive cues that are useful to lie recognition. Researchers have proposed different approaches in the literature to solve the problem of lie recognition from either handcrafted and/or automatic lie features during court trials and police interrogations. Unfortunately, due to the cognitive complexity and the lack of involuntary cues related to lying features, the performances of these approaches suffer and their generalization ability is limited. To improve performance, this stu

Ras inhibitor S-trans, trans-farnesylthiosalicylic acid enhances spatial memory and hippocampal long-term potentiation via up-regulation of NMDA receptor.

Statins by reducing farnesyl-pyrophosphate or farnesyl transferase inhibitors have been demonstrated to enhance spatial memory and long-term potentiation (LTP). The objective of this study was to investigate effects of the synthetic Ras inhibitor S-trans, trans-farnesylthiosalicylic acid (FTS) on spatial cognitive function in adult mice, synaptic plasticity in hippocampal CA1 regions, and NMDA receptor (NMDAr) activity of pyramidal cells. Here, we show that administering FTS (5 mg/kg, i.p.) enhanced spatial cognitive performance, as assessed via Morris water maze and Y-maze tests. Treating hip

Protective Effects of Enriched Environment Against Transient Cerebral Ischemia-Induced Impairment of Passive Avoidance Memory and Long-Term Potentiation in Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Enriched Environment (EE), a complex novel environment, has been demonstrated to improve synaptic plasticity in both injured and intact animals. The present study investigated the capacity of an early environmental intervention to normalize the impairment of passive avoidance memory and Long-Term Potentiation (LTP) induced by transient bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (2-vessel occlusion, 2VO) in rats. METHODS: After weaning, young Wistar rats (22 days old) were housed in EE or Standard Environment (SE) for 40 days. Transient (30-min) incomplete forebrain ischemia was i

Behavioral assessment of Alzheimer's transgenic mice following long-term Abeta vaccination: task specificity and correlations between Abeta deposition and spatial memory.

Long-term vaccinations with human beta-amyloid peptide 1-42 (Abeta1-42) have recently been shown to prevent or markedly reduce Abeta deposition in the PDAPP transgenic model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using a similar protocol to vaccinate 7.5-month-old APP (Tg2576) and APP+PS1 transgenic mice over an 8-month period, we previously reported modest reductions in brain Abeta deposition at 16 months. In these same mice, Abeta vaccinations had no deleterious behavioral effects and, in fact, benefited the mice by providing partial protection from age-related deficits in spatial working memory in th

Long Short-Term Memory Network for Contralateral Knee Angle Estimation During Level-Ground Walking: A Feasibility Study on Able-Bodied Subjects.

Recent reports have revealed that the number of lower limb amputees worldwide has increased as a result of war, accidents, and vascular diseases and that transfemoral amputation accounts for 39% of cases, highlighting the need to develop an improved functional prosthetic knee joint that improves the amputee's ability to resume activities of daily living. To enable transfemoral prosthesis users to walk on level ground, accurate prediction of the intended knee joint angle is critical for transfemoral prosthesis control. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to develop a technique for estim
