BACKGROUND: Discoid meniscus (DM) and femoral trochlear dysplasia (FTD) are common knee disorders. Both as congenital malformation, whether there is a connection between them is unclear and the research on their prevalence in the general population is inadequate. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of FTD and DM in the general population through a large sample size, and to explore the relationship between them.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
METHODS: Patients undergoing knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations at our outpatient clinic were screened and 1003 patients …

BACKGROUND: Medial discoid meniscus (MDM) is an exceedingly rare anatomic abnormality that presents similarly to other meniscal pathologies. Symptomatic MDM is typically managed arthroscopically with mixed short-term and long-term outcomes, although the existing knowledge about MDM is limited. The purpose of this study was to describe the presentation and surgical treatment of MDM in pediatric and adolescent patients.
METHODS: Medical records of 12 knees with MDM in 8 pediatric and adolescent patients treated between 1991 and 2016 were reviewed retrospectively for patient characteristics, cli…

The meniscus is important for load distribution, shock absorption and stability of the knee joint. Meniscus injury or meniscectomy results in decreased function of the meniscus and increased risk of knee osteoarthritis. To preserve the meniscal functions, meniscal repair should be considered as the first option for meniscus injury. Although reoperation rates are higher after meniscal repair compared with arthroscopic partial meniscectomy, long-term follow-up of meniscal repair demonstrated better clinical outcomes and less severe degenerative changes of osteoarthritis compared with partial men…

OBJECTIVE: The hypermobile lateral meniscus of the knee is a rarely described entity. In this case report we aim to draw attention to the clinical presentation and MR imaging findings of this pathology.
CASE REPORT: We review the clinical and imaging findings that led to the diagnosis of hypermobile lateral meniscus with transient subluxation causing intermittent locking, and which subsequently led to successful surgical treatment.
CONCLUSION: Hypermobile lateral meniscus is rarely diagnosed prospectively on MR imaging. A better understanding of this uncommon condition will lead to prompt di…

Current surgical treatments for meniscal tears suffer from subsequent degeneration of knee joints, limited donor organs and inconsistent post-treatment results. Three clinical scaffolds (Menaflex CMI, Actifit® scaffold and NUsurface® Meniscus Implant) are available on the market, but additional data are needed to properly evaluate their safety and effectiveness. Thus, many scaffold-based research activities have been done to develop new materials, structures and fabrication technologies to mimic native meniscus for cell attachment and subsequent tissue development, and restore functionalities …

PURPOSE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease in the elderly population. Most of the previous OA-related researches focused on articular cartilage degeneration, osteophyte formation and synovitis etc. However, the role of the meniscus in these pathological changes has not been given enough attention. The goal of our study was to find the pathological changes of the meniscus in OA knee and determine their relationship.
METHOD: 20 months old female Chinese rabbits received either knee damaging operations with articular cartilage scratch method or sham operation randomly on one of their knees…

The aim of this study is to compare the hold in bone of Meniscus Arrows and Smart Nails, followed by the report of the results of the clinical application of Meniscus Arrows as fixation devices. First, pull-out tests were performed to analyse the holdfast of both nails in bone. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference; therefore, the thinner Meniscus Arrow was chosen as fixation device in the patient series of two patients with a symptomatic Osteochondritis dissecans fragment and three patients with an osteochondral fracture of a femur condyle. The cartilage margins were glued wit…

MR imaging is the preferred imaging modality for evaluating the meniscus. Overall, when strict criteria are followed, it is accurate in diagnosing meniscal tears in patients who have not had prior meniscal surgery. However, an accurate interpretation requires a through knowledge of the normal meniscal anatomy, common meniscal variants, and common diagnostic pitfalls. In this article, the author emphasizes the importance of describing meniscal tears properly and discusses treatment options. Diagnosing a recurrent tear is more complicated in patients who have had prior partial meniscal resection…

Partial meniscectomy is the most widely used intervention in the arthroscopic treatment of meniscal disorders. Despite improved arthroscopic techniques and instrumentation, surgery of the lateral compartment is still challenging. The "wheel track" technique, first described here, will facilitate partial meniscectomy in cases where surgical intervention presents difficulties, in particular at the corpus or the anterior horn of the menisci, and the discoid meniscus. In this technique, an incomplete groove resembling a "wheel track" is created on the surface of the meniscus with the use of the ti…

The meniscus of the knee joint is a fibrocartilage mainly composed of type I collagen and smaller amounts of type II collagen. The distribution of type II collagen in the canine meniscus and its spatial relationship to type I collagen was examined by immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy. Dorsal and coronal slices of the mid-section of medial and lateral menisci from the knee joints of skeletally mature dogs were predigested with Streptomyces hyaluronate lyase and bacterial Protease enzyme XXIV. Monoclonal antibodies against type I collagen (CP17L) and type II collagen (II-II6B3) and an…

Orthopedic treatment with radiofrequency energy (RFE) was first used in shoulder surgery, and its effectiveness has been reported. The purpose of RFE treatment of soft tissue is to induce qualitative changes in collagen and obtain stability. Hypermobile lateral meniscus (HLM) is characterized by abnormal mobility resulting from rupture or defects of the popliteomeniscal fasciculi, but no satisfactory treatment has been reported. We followed up patients with HLM who underwent monopolar RFE treatment and confirmed its short-term effects by magnetic resonance imaging and second-look arthroscopy.

Generally, ganglion or synovial cysts have been reported to originate from numerous structures in and around the knee joint, including the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, popliteal tendon, and menisci. Nevertheless, a ganglion is not a synovial cyst and there is no synovial lining. Meniscal cysts present a subgroup of ganglion cysts that occur in association with meniscal tears. We report 2 cases of unusual meniscal cyst from the anterior segment of the lateral meniscus without any meniscal tear and discuss the possibility of their pathogenesis and treatment.

In twenty rabbits with completion of bone growth, the medial meniscus was replaced with an allograft meniscus that had been preserved at -80 degrees C for 6 to 14 days. As a control, the medial meniscus was removed and reattached without cryopreservation in 14 rabbits. Replaced menisci were examined histologically and microangiographically. Allografted menisci were found to attach to the capsule at 4 weeks. However, the attachments of the anterior and posterior horns were not stable in the majority of rabbits, because the nylon thread for anchoring was broken in these cases. There was osteophy…

The activity and distribution of 10 enzymes was determined in the ruptured knee meniscus of 23 patients, when meniscus was operatively removed. The activities of NADH and SDH indicating oxydative energy metabolism were low in the ruptured meniscus as well as in the synovium close to it. On the contrary, NADPH and LDH, indicating anaerobic energy metabolism and G-6-PDH as an indicator of pentose-phosphate shunt, showed moderate or high activity. The activities of GLDH, ATPase, AcPase, AlPase, and LAPase were low in the meniscus tissue, but moderate and sometimes high in synovial tissue and fibr…

A preliminary study of the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed. Ten asymptomatic volunteers with no clinical history of TMJ disorder and five patients with a recent history of trauma to the TMJ were examined using a special surface coil. The meniscus, which is only slightly brighter than the surrounding tissue, gave a high signal and was demonstrated very clearly in its normal position in the controls and shown to be dislocated in the post-trauma cases. Four criteria for identification of the temporo-mandibular meniscus were established in the norma…

The topographic relation of the popliteus bursa to the peripheral rim of the lateral meniscus is described with particular attention to the arthroscopic appearance. The arthroscopic findings are compared to sections of knee joints obtained after amputation. As a constant result we found a peripheral separation of the lateral meniscus in the posterior part which extends for 2-3 cm. In consequence of these physiological defects in the superior and inferior attachments to the joint capsule the popliteus bursa communicates with the central part of the joint cavity on the femoral and in the majorit…
