Prevalence, risk factors and health-seeking behavior of menstrual disorders among women in India: a review of two-decade evidence.

BACKGROUND: Menstrual health is critical for women of reproductive age. It is also evident that menstrual disorders have contributed to the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases. OBJECTIVE: To our knowledge, no literature review explicitly addresses the prevalence, risk factors, and health-seeking behaviour of menstrual disorders in India. Therefore, the current study aims to synthesize the available scientific evidence on the prevalence and risk factors of menstrual disorders in India over the last two decades. METHODS: We followed PRISMA guidelines to conduct the review. We used G

Practical considerations for diagnosis and treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescence - distilling guidelines into clinical practice.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The diagnostic criteria for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adults may overdiagnose PCOS in adolescents. Since 2015, three guidelines have developed adolescent-specific diagnostic criteria and treatment recommendations. In this review, we compare and contrast the recommendations to assist in the practical application to clinical practice. RECENT FINDINGS: The guidelines agree that hyperandrogenism with menstrual irregularity be diagnostic criteria for PCOS in adolescents yet have slight differences in how to diagnose hyperandrogenism and in the definition of menstrual i

Menstrual Disorders Related to Eating Disorders.

Eating Disorders (ED) are associated with multiple physical complications that strongly affect the physical health of these young and fragile patients and can also cause significant mortality, the highest among psychiatric pathologies. Among the various organic complications, albeit still little known, the gynecological implications, up to infertility, are very widespread. Both among adolescent and adult patients, gynecological symptoms can be very widespread and range from menstrual irregularities to amenorrhea, from vaginitis to ovarian polycystosis, up to complications during the gestationa

Menorrhagia as main presentation sign of severe hypothyroidism in a pediatric patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The relative high frequency of menstrual irregularities in the first two-three years after menarche may lead to the risk of underestimation of associated pathological conditions, which are always to be accurately researched with careful examination and anamnesis. The association between menstrual irregularities and hypothyroidism is described in literature but the available data are scarce and mainly based on adult case series. It is described that low plasma levels of thyroid hormone can shift the hemostatic system towards a hypocoagulable and hyperfibrinolytic state and seem to l

Risk of chronic spontaneous urticaria in reproductive-aged women with abnormal uterine bleeding: A population-based cohort study.

Women with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) have been reported to develop chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). Nevertheless, whether or not AUB women have an increased risk of CSU has not been examined in large-scale epidemiologic studies. This study aimed to investigate the risk of CSU among reproductive-aged women with AUB. A total of 79 595 patients and 79 107 propensity-score matched controls were recruited from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database to conduct a nationwide cohort study. The Cox proportional-hazard regression model was applied to examine the adjusted hazard ra

Efficacy and safety in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Hyperprolactinemia is a neuroendocrine disease that is responsible for a quarter of cases of secondary amenorrhea, which can lead to infertility in women. Dopaminergic agonists (bromocriptine, cabergoline, quinagolide) can be used in the treatment. However, there is a lack of secondary studies that compare their efficacy and safety, especially through a network meta-analysis. Thus, to contribute to the decision-making, a systematic review and network meta-analyses (NMA) were performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dopaminergic agonists in the treatment of

Imperforate hymen presenting with fecal frequency and use of stay sutures at time of hymenectomy. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Imperforate hymen is a rare gynecological disorder that can lead to a number of short-term and even long-term complications. CASE: A 14-year-old girl presented complaining of fecal frequency and urgency for over 1 year. On examination she was found to have an imperforate hymen. CONCLUSION: Although often diagnosed in association with cyclic monthly pelvic pain, we present a case in which imperforate hymen presented with fecal frequency and urgency. Surgical management is the mainstay of treatment. In our experience we found the addition of stay sutures to be quite valuable in fac
