Biogeochemical factors influencing net mercury methylation in contaminated freshwater sediments from the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.

The activity of various anaerobic microbes, including sulfate reducers (SRB), iron reducers (FeRP) and methanogens (MPA) has been linked to mercury methylation in aquatic systems, although the relative importance of each microbial group in the overall process is poorly understood in natural sediments. The present study focused on the biogeochemical factors (i.e. the relative importance of various groups of anaerobic microbes (FeRP, SRB, and MPA) that affect net monomethylmercury (MMHg) formation in contaminated sediments of the St. Lawrence River (SRL) near Cornwall (Zone 1), Ontario, Canada.

Warming inhibits HgII methylation but stimulates methylmercury demethylation in paddy soils.

Inorganic mercury (HgII) can be transformed into neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) by microorganisms in paddy soils, and the subsequent accumulation in rice grains poses an exposure risk for human health. Warming as an important manifestation of climate change, changes the composition and structure of microbial communities, and regulates the biogeochemical cycles of Hg in natural environments. However, the response of specific HgII methylation/demethylation to the changes in microbial communities caused by warming remain unclear. Here, nationwide sampling of rice paddy soils and a temperature-ad

Key active mercury methylating microorganisms and their synergistic effects on methylmercury production in paddy soils.

Rice contamination with neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) from paddy soils is an escalating global concern. Identifying the microorganisms responsible for mercury (Hg) methylation in these soils is essential for controlling Hg contamination in the food chain and mitigating health impacts. Current research often focuses on total Hg-methylating microorganisms, overlooking the contributions of active ones, which can lead to either overestimating or neglecting the specific roles of microorganisms in Hg methylation within paddy soils. In this study, active Hg-methylating microorganisms in paddy soils

Geochemical and Dietary Drivers of Mercury Bioaccumulation in Estuarine Benthic Invertebrates.

Sediments represent the main reservoir of mercury (Hg) in aquatic environments and may act as a source of Hg to aquatic food webs. Yet, accumulation routes of Hg from the sediment to benthic organisms are poorly constrained. We studied the bioaccumulation of inorganic and methylmercury (HgII and MeHg, respectively) from different geochemical pools of Hg into four groups of benthic invertebrates (amphipods, polychaetes, chironomids, and bivalves). The study was conducted using mesocosm experiments entailing the use of multiple isotopically enriched Hg tracers and simulation of estuarine systems

Trophic transfer of persistent toxic substances through a coastal food web in Ulsan Bay, South Korea: Application of compound-specific isotope analysis of nitrogen in amino acids.

Trophic magnification factor (TMF) of persistent toxic substances (PTSs: Hg, PCBs, PAHs, and styrene oligomers (SOs)) in a coastal food web (12 fish and four invertebrates) was determined in Ulsan Bay, South Korea. The nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ15N) of amino acids [δ15NGlu-Phe based on glutamic acid (δ15NGlu) and phenylalanine (δ15NPhe)] were used to estimate the trophic position (TPGlu-Phe) of organisms. The TPGlu-Phe of organisms ranged from 1.64 to 3.69, which was lower than TP estimated by δ15N of bulk particulate organic matter (TPBulk: 2.46-4.21). Mercury and CB 138, 153, 187, and

Production and migration of methylmercury in water-level-fluctuating zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China: Dual roles of flooding-tolerant perennial herb.

Water-level-fluctuating zone (WLFZ) is a prevalent water-land ecotone favorable for mercury (Hg) methylation. The succession of flooding tolerance plants in WLFZ gradually changes the landscape, and also brings a new question worth understanding whether these plants would enhance methylmercury (MeHg) production in WLFZ and increase risks to the aquatic environment. Given bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L). Pers) as the dominant perennial herb with high flooding-tolerance in WLFZ of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), we conducted a comprehensive study to investigate its roles in the production a

Distributions of Total Mercury and Methylmercury in Dragonflies from a Large, Abandoned Mercury Mining Region in China.

Dragonflies (Order Odonata) often are considered to be biosentinels of environmental contamination, e.g., heavy metals and/or persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Dragonflies (n = 439) belonging to 15 species of 8 genera were collected from an abandoned mercury (Hg) mining region in China to investigate the bioaccumulation of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg). THg and MeHg concentrations in dragonflies varied widely within ranges of 0.06-19 mg/kg (average: 1.5 ± 2.2 mg/kg) and 0.02-5.7 mg/kg (average: 0.75 ± 0.65 mg/kg), respectively. THg and MeHg were positively correlated with bodywei

Determination of the Intracellular Complexation of Inorganic and Methylmercury in Cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803.

Understanding of mercury (Hg) complexation with low molecular weight (LMW) bioligands will help elucidate its speciation. In natural waters, the rate of this complexation is governed by physicochemical, geochemical, and biochemical parameters. However, the role of bioligands involved in Hg intracellular handling by aquatic microorganisms is not well documented. Here, we combine the use of isotopically labeled Hg species (inorganic and monomethylmercury, iHg and MeHg) with gas or liquid chromatography coupling to elemental and molecular mass spectrometry to explore the role of intracellular bio

Methylmercury biomagnification in aquatic food webs of Poyang Lake, China: Insights from amino acid signatures.

As the dominant mercury species in fish, methylmercury (MeHg) biomagnifies during its trophic transfer through aquatic food webs. MeHg is known to bind to cysteine, forming the complex of MeHg-cysteine. However, relationship between MeHg and cysteine in large-scale food webs has not been explored and contrasted with MeHg biomagnification models. Here, we quantified the compound-specific nitrogen isotopic analysis of amino acids (CSIA-AA), MeHg, and amino acid composition in aquatic organisms of Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. The trophic positions (TPAA) of organisms ranged

[Drug treatments of chronic venous insufficiency: pharmaco-clinical evaluation].

There are many methods for the assessment of venotropic drugs. Clinical trials based on randomized comparison with placebo are essential. The different methodes used for the evaluation of the functional effects are chosen on the basis of their performance and pertinence for the study objectives. These include three aims which we feel are essential: increased venous tone, decreased capillary permeability and reversal of microcirculatory impairment. Calf plethysmography is highly adapted for the evaluation of venous tone. The mercury gauge works well, but the future will tell if air plethysmogra

Demethylation Pathway of Methylmercury in the Spleen and Peripheral Organs of Bluefin Tuna─Implications for Fish Consumers.

Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT, Thunnus thynnus) accumulates and breaks down methylmercury (MeHg) mainly in the spleen, with smaller amounts processed in kidneys and other peripheral organs, and only minimally in the liver. While the spleen is well-known as the body's largest immune organ, its role in detoxification is less recognized. Here, we used high-energy-resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy to examine the chemical forms of mercury (Hg) in ABFT tissues, building on prior analysis of stable Hg isotopes. We found that Hg binds to selenium (Se) in 28 out of 29 tissues, primarily as Hg-tetr

The underappreciated role of natural organic matter bond Hg(II) and nanoparticulate HgS as substrates for methylation in paddy soils across a Hg concentration gradient.

Rice consumption is the major pathway for human methylmercury (MeHg) exposure in inland China, especially in mercury (Hg) contaminated regions. MeHg production, a microbially driven process, depends on both the chemical speciation of inorganic divalent mercury, Hg(II), that determines Hg bioavailability for methylation. Studies have shown that Hg(II) speciation in contaminated paddy soils is mostly controlled by natural organic matter and sulfide levels, which are typically thought to limit Hg mobility and bioavailability. Yet, high levels of MeHg are found in rice, calling for reconsideration

Fate of mercury species in the coastal plume of the Adour River estuary (Bay of Biscay, SW France).

Because mercury (Hg) undergoes significant biogeochemical processes along the estuarine-coastal continuum, the objective of this work was to investigate the distribution and reactivity of methylmercury (MeHg), inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) and gaseous Hg (DGM) in plume waters of the Adour River estuary (Bay of Biscay). Vertical profiles, spatial and tidal variability of Hg species concentrations were evaluated during two campaigns (April 2007 and May 2010) characterized by significant plume extents over the coastal zone. Incubations with isotopically enriched tracers were performed on bulk and fi

Mercury speciation and total trace element determination of low-biomass biological samples.

Current approaches to mercury speciation and total trace element analysis require separate extraction/digestions of the sample. Ecologically important aquatic organisms--notably primary consumers such as zooplankton, polychaetes and amphipods--usually yield very low biomass for analysis, even with significant compositing of multiple organisms. Individual organisms in the lower aquatic food chains (mussels, snails, oysters, silversides, killifish) can also have very low sample mass, and analysis of whole single organisms is important to metal uptake studies. A method for the determination of bo

Chemical contaminants (trace metals, persistent organic pollutants) in albacore tuna from western Indian and south-eastern Atlantic Oceans: Trophic influence and potential as tracers of populations.

Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) is a highly commercial fish species harvested in the world's Oceans. Identifying the potential links between populations is one of the key tools that can improve the current management across fisheries areas. In addition to characterising populations' contamination state, chemical compounds can help refine foraging areas, individual flows and populations' structure, especially when combined with other intrinsic biogeochemical (trophic) markers such as carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. This study investigated the bioaccumulation of seven selected trace metals

Extremely elevated methyl mercury levels in water, sediment and organisms in a Romanian reservoir affected by release of mercury from a chlor-alkali plant.

We examined mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry and biomagnification in the Babeni Reservoir, a system strongly affected by the release of Hg from a chlor-alkali plant. Total mercury (THg) concentrations in river water reached 88 ng L(-1) but decreased rapidly in the reservoir (to 9 ng L(-1)). In contrast, monomethylmercury (MMHg) concentrations increased from the upstream part of the reservoir to the central part (0.7 ng L(-1)), suggesting high methylation within the reservoir. Moreover, vertical water column profiles of THg and MMHg indicated that Hg methylation mainly occurred deep in the water co
