[Somatoform disorder or neurological syndrome? Complex mental and movement disorder and autonomic dysfunction in a 65-year-old patient - Case 1/2011].

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 65-year-old female patient presented with increasing vertigo, tendency to fall, dry cough and, in addition … ting an affection of the brain stem. A magnetic resonance imaging of the head showed atrophy of the mesencephalon. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: In light of these findings the patient was diagnosed Steele-Richardson-Olszewksi syndrome. The therapy which comprises training measures and medication with a cholinesterase inhibitor aims to retain neuropsychological and …

Comparative distribution of neurotensin-like immunoreactivity in the brain of a teleost (Carassius auratus), an amphibian (Hyla meridionalis), and a reptile (Gallotia galloti).

The distribution of neurotensin (NT) was studied in the brain of three species belonging to the three major classes of cold-blooded vertebra … dditional immunoreactive (ir) structures were observed in the optic tectum and the tegmentum of the mesencephalon. In the goldfish pituitary, an extensive innervation was consistently observed at the level of the rostral pars distalis, whereas in both frog and lizard, positive fibers were only detected in the external layer of the median eminence. In the three …

Distribution of FMRFamide-like immunoreactivity in the brain of the elasmobranch fish Scyliorhinus canicula.

The distribution of FMRFamide-like-immunoreactive peptides was investigated in the brain and pituitary of the elasmobranch fish Scyliorhinus … eus lobi lateralis hypothalami and in the nucleus periventricularis hypothalami. More caudally, the mesencephalon and the caudal brainstem only contained scattered varicose FMRFamide-immunoreactive fibers. Stained fibers were also identified in the median eminence and several FMRFamide-like-positive cells were detected in the dorsal and rostral parts of the neu …

Neurotoxicity of thallium: biochemical and morphological study of organic lesions.

A biochemical study of experimental thallium intoxication in newborn rats and its morphological consequences upon the brain of developing animals was undertaken. The thallium content was analyzed in the following encephalic regions: hippocampus, hypothalamus, mesencephalon, cerebellum, and cortex. One day after application of the toxic substance, a homogeneous distribution of the metal in the brain was found. Thallium concentrations in the mentioned regions were twice as high as those found in an adult rat, at the same dosage, 20 newborn Wistar rats were used for the histopathological study. 5…

[Changes in cerebral level of monoamines by Japanese encephalitis virus infection].

The changes in monoamine levels of different brain regions following Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) intraperitoneal inoculation were exam … e in other cerebral regions. 3) The viral antigen was detected in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, mesencephalon and diencephalon in addition to the substantia nigra and striatum. From these results, it is presumed that clinical manifestation of JEV infection may involve the changes in the metabolism of neurotransmitter, especially those of DA and serotonin in …

Necrotizing effects of kainic acid on neurons in the pigeon brain: histological observations.

The neurotoxin kainic acid (KA) has been shown to destroy neurons in the pigeon paleostriatal complex (PC), the avian analogue of the caudato-putamen and globus pallidus. In this earlier study the movement disorders in pigeons were strikingly similar to those reported by others in rats following intracerebral injection of KA into the corpus striatum. The toxic influences of KA on other parts of the pigeon brain have not been described. Therefore, KA was injected into areas of the telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon and cerebellum. Areas sensitive to KA showed a marked cell loss and the …

Quantifying Spontaneous Ca2+ Fluxes and their Downstream Effects in Primary Mouse Midbrain Neurons.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder caused by the degeneration of dopaminergic (DA) neurons. Excessive Ca2+ influx due to the abnormal activation of glutamate receptors results in DA excitotoxicity and has been identified as an important mechanism for DA neuron loss. In this study, we isolate, dissociate, and culture midbrain neurons from the mouse ventral mesencephalon (VM) of ED14 mouse embryos. We then infect the long-term primary mouse midbrain cultures with an adeno-associated virus (AAV) expressing a genetically encoded calcium indicator, GCaMP6f under co…

Follow-up brain CT revealed newly developed hydrocephalus and compression of the mesencephalon. His symptoms fully resolved after a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt operation. In this case report, we describe the case of a patient exhibiting tonic upward eyeball deviation induced by hydrocephalus that was not associated with a seizure.

CO2-induced c-fos expression in the CNS catecholaminergic neurons.

In these studies we examined c-fos expression in catecholaminergic neurons following exposure of unanesthetized rats to hypercapnic stress. … the locus coeruleus (A6 noradrenaline cells). However, over 90% of TH-immunoreactive neurons in the mesencephalon and diencephalon (dopaminergic cells) did not express Fos-like immunoreactivity in response to CO2. These results indicate that the brainstem noradrenaline-containing neurons are part of the neuronal networks that react to hypercapnic exposure.

Partial characterization of the proteome of the mouse striatum.

Many diseases of the mammalian CNS, including Parkinson's (PD) and Lesch Nyhan disease (LND), are associated with programmatic neurodegeneration or dysfunction of dopaminergic neurons in the mesencephalon, the nigrostriatal pathway, and its projections in the striatum [1-4]. Proteomic studies on brain tissue of both animal models and human PD patients have provided evidence for dysfunction and damage of many pathways, including oxidative stress-related damage, ubiquitin-proteasome dysfunction, mitochondrial energy metabolism deficiencies, and synaptic function [5-11]. To date no such proteomic…

In contrast, the infratentorial structures (cerebellar hemispheres, brain stem, mesencephalon, and hypothalamus), which are predominantly affected by the atrophic process, showed distinct and symmetric hypometabolism. [Visual evoked potentials as an indicator of supratentorial and infratentorial herniation].

The VEP was investigated in 172 patients with infratentorial and in 100 patients with supratentorial space occupying lesions. In each group … erefore, that VEP investigations enable the registration of a compression or torsion of the cranial mesencephalon (mesencephalo-diencephalic mechanical irritation) or the presence of a clinical silent transtentorial herniation in space occupying lesions. The loss of the VEP appears to yield an early and certain signal of the progressing mid-brain syndrome.

Oculomotor nerve paresis is a rare neurological manifestation in rheumatological disease. It is most commonly described in connection with s … e subsequent discussion, the neuroanatomical relationships of the oculomotor nuclear complex in the mesencephalon are described together with the fasciculi and the course of the peripheral nerve. On the basis of selected case histories, the possible anatomical localization of the lesion in oculomotor paresis of vascular origin is discussed.
