The present paper describes a method that accounts for variation in indoor chemical exposure settings and accompanying human toxicity in life cycle assessment (LCA). Metal degreasing with dichloromethane was used as a case study to show method in practice. We compared the human toxicity related to the degreasing of 1m(2) of metal surface in different exposure scenarios for industrial workers, professional users outside industrial settings, and home consumers. The fraction of the chemical emission that is taken in by exposed individuals (i.e. the intake fraction) was estimated on the basis of o

The paper addresses the problems of environmental and occupational exposures to mercury compounds. Mercury and its compounds are very toxic. Occupational exposure and environmental pollution are the major sources of hazard to human health. Metallic mercury evaporates at room temperature producing inorganic and organic compounds, and forms amalgams with many metals. In more than 50 professions, workers may be exposed to mercury, particularly in the mining and chemical industries and in agriculture. Occupational poisoning is rarely acute but it is usually chronic. The symptoms result from the da

The health status of some 6,000 workers from Latvia who went to clean-up the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) site following the explosion on 26 April 1986 has been analyzed. The data on these workers have been recorded in the Latvian State Register of Occupational disease patients and people exposed to ionizing radiation due to Chernobyl NPP accident (Latvian State Register) that was established in 1994. From these data, estimates have been made of external ionizing radiation to which these workers were exposed together with observations on the impact of exposure to heavy metals (especial

Plasma cutting is a metal fabrication process that employs an electrically conductive plasma arc to cut metals. The metal fume emitted from stainless steel plasma cutting may consist of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), which is a carcinogen, and other toxicants. Overexposure to plasma cutting fume may cause pulmonary toxicity and other health effects. This study was to evaluate the effects of operation parameters (arc current and arc time) on the fume formation rates, Cr6+ and other oxides concentrations, particle size distributions (PSD), and particle morphology. A fume chamber and high-volume pum

Lead is an important toxic metal agent found in many industrial processes in the present day. Lead exposure must be of particular concern because of ongoing exposure to thousands of workers in the industrial plants and recent research indicating that asymptomatic lead exposure can result in chronic toxicity manifestations. Therefore, determination and control lead exposure among the risk workers is very necessary. Like other developing countries, lead pollution becomes an important public health problem of Thailand, especially for the big cities as Bangkok but relatively few of these countries

OBJECTIVE: To assess disease mortality among people with exposure to metal-rich particulate air pollution.
METHODS: We conducted a cohort study on mortality from 1981 to 2005 among 33,573 people living near a nickel/copper smelter in Harjavalta, Finland. Nickel concentration in soil humus was selected as an indicator for long-term exposure. Relative risks--adjusted for age, socioeconomic status, and calendar period--were calculated for three exposure zones.
RESULTS: The relative risks for diseases of the circulatory system by increasing exposure were 0.93 (95% confidence interval = 0.79 to 1

Many etiologies are held accountable for nasal septum perforations. Topical nasal drug usage, previous surgeries, trauma, nose picking, squamous cell carcinoma, some rheumatological disorders such as granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener granulomatosis), some infectious diseases such as syphilis and leprosy are among the causes of the perforations. Occupational heavy metal exposures by inhalation rarely may also cause nasal septum perforation. Here, we present a 29-year-old patient without any known diseases, who is a worker at a metallic coating and nickel-plating factory, referred for in

Epidemiologic evidence on the relation between exposure to metals and cancer is reviewed. Human exposure to metals is common, with wide use in industry and long-term environmental persistence. Historically, the heaviest metal exposures occurred in the workplace or in environmental settings in close proximity to industrial sources. Among the general population, exposure to a number of metals is widespread but generally at substantially lower levels than have been found in industry. The carcinogenicity of arsenic, chromium, and nickel has been established. Occupational and environmental arsenic

There is a scarcity of studies on the interactions between heavy metals and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Using a variety of statistical approaches, we investigated the impact of three common heavy metals on liver enzymes and NAFLD markers in a Korean adult population. We observed that cadmium, mercury, and lead all demonstrated positive correlations with liver enzymes and NAFLD indices. Our findings were mostly robust in secondary analysis, which included three novel mixture modeling approaches (WQS, qgcomp, and BKMR) as well as in silico investigation of molecular mechanisms (ge

Toxic substances produced during welding include heavy metals, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. The study aims to evaluate the heavy metals concentration in welding fumes and the blood of the animals exposed to welding fumes. The fumes were collected from a welding site by a skilled welder and part of it was subjected to metals analysis. A total of 130 rats were divided into 13 groups. 12 groups were given doses calculated to correspond to real-life workers exposure regimes and 1 group served as control. The dosages were administered intratracheally after anesthetization w

BACKGROUND: Nickel, cobalt and chromium are frequent skin sensitizers. Skin exposure results in eczema in sensitized individuals, the risk being related to the skin dose.
OBJECTIVES: To develop a self-sampling method for quantification of skin exposure to metals, to validate the method, and to assess its feasibility.
METHODS: Defined metal doses (0.01-5 µg) were applied to the fingers of 5 participants. Skin areas (2 cm2 ) were sampled with 1% HNO3 , either as 0.1 ml on a swab, or as 0.5 ml on a wipe. Furthermore, 17 participants performed self-sampling by swab after 2 h of leisure activity.

Cytogenetic studies on subjects occupationally or environmentally exposed to cadmium are reviewed and discussed. After a first report of increased chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes of itai-itai patients from Japan, several studies on workers occupationally exposed to cadmium gave conflicting results. These differences may perhaps be explained by the action of co-factors (e.g., nutritional deficiencies in itai-itai patients; concomitant exposure to other metals in some occupational groups), or by different levels of exposure. In a study on cadmium workers with a wide range of cumulative exp

Neurologic and psychiatric symptoms such as headache, tinnitus, defective hearing, changing desorientation and aggressiveness are initial symptoms of methyltin chloride intoxication. Some patients also developed epileptic equivalents, such as dreamy attacks and central ventilation transaminases. Laboratory findings included low levels of serum potassium, leucocytosis and elevated transaminases. The excretion rate of tin in the urine correlated with the severity of the intoxication. There was no measurable effect of plasma separation or d-penicillamine therapy on tin excretion in the urine or o

Lead (Pb) is a metal with a widespread diffusion in the environment. Pb tends to accumulate in the human body and, as a consequence, semen alterations can be present in exposed workers or general population. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect on semen parameters among healthy men exposed to environmental or occupational Pb. A systematic literature search was performed on November 12th, 2022, through MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Observational studies comparing semen parameters in men exposed to Pb and those not exposed were included. Sperm parameters were pooled u
