Waste water bacterial isolates resistant to heavy metals and antibiotics.

Sewage water of Casablanca, an industrial city in Morocco, was studied for microorganisms resistant to heavy metals. Isolates were purified and collected on agar slants to be screened for resistance to heavy metals, including mercury in vitro. The strains that showed high resistance to heavy metals were also studied for their resistance to antibiotics and aromatic hydrocarbons. Results indicated that the strains most resistant to all tested products belonged to Ps. fluorescens, Ps. aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcus sp. These strains exhibit high minimal i…

Contact sensitivity to nickel and other metals in jewelry reactors.

BACKGROUND: Many patients who give a history of a dermatitis reaction to jewelry or metal contact with skin are negative to metals on standard patch testing. Some may be showing false-negative reactions. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to determine whether patients with a history of jewelry reactions but whose standard patch tests were negative have a false-negative reaction or are allergic to metals other than nickel, cobalt, or chromium. METHODS: Four hundred forty-nine patients were studied who gave a history of reacting to jewelry or metal. Of these, 210 were tested to the metals in the Europ…

Sub-lethal effects of heavy metals on activated sludge microorganisms.

The effects of heavy metals, at sub-lethal concentrations, on activated sludge microbial ecosystem were investigated. Adsorption capacity and rate of copper, chromium, lead and zinc on microbial flocs were much faster than that of organic matters. Metals affected not only the adsorption rate of organic matters but also the COD adsorption capacity of the activated sludge. Effects of heavy metals, on wastewater treatment performance of a sequencing batch reactor were also studied. Metal-laden wastewater at sub-lethal levels affected the performance to different extents, depending on the hydrauli…

PBK modeling for metals. Examples with lead, uranium, and chromium.

Physiologically-based models for metals differ in several key respects from models for organic compounds. Although sequestration by binding to specific metal-binding proteins in liver, kidney, and red cell may be important, neither the magnitude and pattern of metabolism nor potential accumulation in fat is a component of models of metal kinetics. In addition, the long residence times of bone-seeking elements require that bone turnover and metabolism be incorporated into physiologically-based models for these elements. Three mechanism (rapid exchange at bone/blood interfaces, trapping or incor…

Concentrations of heavy metals in maternal and umbilical cord blood.

Concentrations of lead, cadmium, methylmercury and total mercury were measured in maternal and umbilical cord blood using graphite atomic absorption spectrometry. Two essential metals, copper and zinc, were also determined using ion chromatography. Lead, copper and zinc were found to be lower in the cord blood whereas methylmercury and total mercury were higher in cord blood than in maternal blood. Little differences were noted for cadmium in maternal and cord blood. Significant positive correlations were observed between the concentrations in maternal and cord blood with regard to lead (corre…

[Waste volatile ashes, a new source of hypersensitivity to metals].

Dermatological examination was done and patch tests were performed in 393 workers employed in contact with waste volatile ashes in electric power stations, and workers employed in construction material industry producing prefabricated construction blocks from these ashes. All studied workers were exposed also additionally to mineral oils. Eczema was found in 17.8% of cases, and oil acne in 8.1%. Chromium hypersensitivity was noted in 21.4% of workers, cobalt hypersensitivity in 12.2% and nickel hypersensitivity in 5.3%. Using the method of atomic absorption spectrophotometry the levels were as

Human circadian rhythms in temperature, trace metals, and blood variables.

The literature supports the concept that circadian changes in body temperature reflect changes in the thermoregulatory set point. We were in … e counts, and several other blood variables were monitored. Circadian rhythms in temperature, trace metals, and various leukocyte populations were demonstrated. The 24-h pattern of changes in plasma concentrations of iron and zinc approximate an inverse relationship with rectal temperature. Although we were unable to detect any IL-1 activity in human pla …

Impact of effects of acid precipitation on toxicity of metals.

Acid precipitation may increase human exposure to several potentially toxic metals by increasing metal concentrations in major pathways to man, particularly food and water, and in some instances by enhancing the conversion of metal species to more toxic forms. Human exposures to methylmercury are almost entirely by way of consumption of fish and seafood. In some countries, intakes by this route may approach the levels that can give rise to adverse health effects for population groups with a high consumption of these food items. A possible increase in methylmercury concentrations in fish from l…

Transition metals mediate enzymatic inactivation caused by favism-inducing agents.

Enzymatic activity of purified or membrane-bound acetylcholine esterase was lost when incubated aerobically in the presence of both favism-inducing agent (isouramil or divicine) and copper ions. The requirement for oxygen could be substituted by hydrogen peroxide. Chelating agents provided total protection to the proteins. The suggested mechanism of enzymatic inactivation is analogous to that suggested earlier for the effects of superoxide and ascorbate, and involves the site-specific formation of hydroxyl radicals in the metal-mediated Haber-Weiss reaction. These findings may be relevant to t

Lead and other metals can substitute for Ca2+ in calmodulin.

We have studied the interaction between some heavy metal ions, as compared with earth alkali ions, and calmodulin, a tissue protein which binds Ca2+ and mediates some of its effects. 1. Calmodulin dependent phosphodiesterase was activated with Pb2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, and Cd2+ (EC50 about 0.8 microM). The maximal activation achieved decreases in the order given. Hg2+, Sn2+, Fe2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Bi3+, and Sb3+ up to 20 microM did not activate. 2. Pb2+ can replace Ca2+ with respect to the calmodulin-dependent phosphorylation of brain membranes. With high Pb2+ concentrations, phosphorylation was inhi

[Pulmonary fibrosis due to working with hard metals (author's transl)].

Hard metals are worked with in numerous small industries. Thus hard metal fibroses are probably more frequent than has been supposed up to now. Observations on three patients have shown that a dry cough may preceed demonstrable manifestations by several months. As the full picture of the disease is hard to influence therapeutically an immediate change of job should be encouraged as soon as suspicious symptoms occur.

[Aspects of enzymatic toxicology of metals. A review (author's transl)].

The adverse and beneficial effects of metals have occupied a great concern in many branches of biology for centuries, but their biochemical roles have been studied systematically only in the last four decades. Almost all the metals, especially those of high toxicity, bind readily to mercapto groups, and these are frequently important in enzyme systems. Furthermore, a large number of in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that toxic metals can replace essential metals in many of their metalloenzymes, with resultant changes in activity. Metals also bind to protein, phospholipid and nucleic acid…

Noble metals: a toxicological appraisal of potential new environmental contaminants.

The public health benefits expected by reducing known hazardous emissions from mobile sources should not be compromised by increasing levels of other potentially hazardous unregulated emissions. Catalytic converters are going to be used to meet the statutory requirements on carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions from light duty motor vehicles. Platinum and palladium metals are the catalytic materials to be used in these emission control devices. Preliminary experimental evidence and analysis of the impact of these control devices on the future use and demand for platinum indicates that this…

Studies of nutritional safety of some heavy metals in mice.

Heavy metals have been proposed as nutrient markers to allow the accurate determination of the time of passage, nutrient intake, or apparent utilization of multiple nutrients. In order to evaluate possible toxic effects of scandium, chromium, lanthanum, samarium, europium, dysprosium, terbium, thulium, and ytterbium oxides, and barium sulfate upon growth, general development, reproduction, and lactation, mice were fed different levels of these compounds for three generations. The amount of elements fed were 0,110, 100, and 1000 times the use amount. The use amounts were (in ppm2.) : Sc, 0.12; …
