Three Gorges Dam (TGD) is the largest hydroelectric construction in the world, and its potential impacts on the ecological environment and human health risks have invoked considerable global concern. However, as a mercury (Hg) sensitive system, limited work was conducted on the Hg exposure level of local residents around the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). Thus, 540 human hair samples and 22 species of local food samples were collected to assess the Hg exposure and human health risk to the residents located in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR) and to investigate their dietary exposure to

Human exposure to organic mercury (Hg) as methylmercury (MeHg) from seafood consumption is widely considered a health risk because pure methylmercury is extremely neurotoxic. In contrast, the clinical significance of Hg exposure from amalgam (AMG) dental restorations, the only other major nonoccupational source of Hg exposure, has long been debated. Here, we examined data from the two most recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) on 14 181 subjects to assess the contributions of seafood consumption versus AMG to blood total mercury (THg), inorganic mercury (IHg), and m

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) exposure can induce adverse neurodevelopmental effects in humans and is a global environmental health concern. Human exposure to MMHg occurs predominately through the consumption of fishery foods and rice in Asia, but it is challenging to quantify these two exposure sources. Here, we innovatively utilized MMHg compound-specific stable isotope analyses (MMHg-CSIA) of the hair to quantify the human MMHg sources in coastal and inland areas, where fishery foods and rice are routinely consumed. Our data showed that the fishery foods and rice end members had distinct Δ199HgM

It is the first time to investigate local distribution patterns of mercury (Hg) in mice organs after Hg and Se exposure with detection of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Two batch of adult mice were employed to be exposed to inorganic mercury (iHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) with or without Se at the dose of 55 μmol kg-1. Tissue sections of brain, kidney, liver, and spleen from one batch mice were prepared to get local imaging of Hg by LA-ICP-MS. Tissues from another batch mice were used to quantify Hg and Se in tissues with ICP-MS after acid digestion. T

In the recent decade, the hydroelectric reservoir is identified as a methylmercury (MeHg) hotspot and gained much attention. The artificial water level management in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in China formed a water-level-fluctuation zone (WLFZ) undergoing flooding drying rotations annually. However, the mercury (Hg) methylation and major geochemical driving factors at different elevations in the WLFZ remain unclear. Here we use total Hg (HgT) normalized MeHg (MeHg/HgT ratio) to evaluate Hg methylation degree in a one-year field study at 155, 165 m elevations in the WLFZ and with >175 m

Mercury (Hg) in fish poses a great threat to human health. Consumption of low-Hg-level fish species (e.g., rabbitfish, Siganus canaliculatus) could be one possible solution to balance the nutrient benefits and Hg exposure. However, the underlying mechanisms for the low Hg accumulation in rabbitfish remain unclear. This study quantitatively described the disposition of inorganic Hg(II) and methylmercury (MeHg) in rabbitfish under different exposure routes by constructing a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model. The results strongly suggested that effective elimination (estimated ra

Visualization of Hg(II) and MeHg in their native contexts is significant for examining mercury poisoning, while it is challenging because of indistinguishable fluorescent (FL) signals during FL imaging. Herein, visualizations of mercury methylation and dynamic transformations of Hg(II) and MeHg are achieved in living biological systems. Well distinguishable FL responses (blue emission for Hg(II), yellow emission for MeHg) are obtained by a double-response FL probe (DPAHB) without any interference. As demonstrated by experimental and computational studies, the distinguishable signals are attrib

Mercury (Hg) is one of the chemicals that bring serious adverse effects to the environment and human beings. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxin while inorganic Hg (IHg) is not. Early screening of the neurotoxicity of chemicals may help reduce the occurrence of neurological disorders by minimizing chemical exposure. This work proposed the combined application of gut microbiome, metabolomics and metallomics to differentiate the neurotoxicity between MeHg and IHg in rats. It was found that MeHg caused down-regulated Bacteroides, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, and up-regulated Actinobacteria and

Biotic mercury (Hg) methylation appears to depend on factors such as microbial activity and the concentration and bioavailability of Hg2+ to the Hg-methylating organisms. Recently, the presence of cyanobacteria has been linked with high methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations. The aim of this work was to test MeHg production in microcosms, in relation to the amount of periphytic cyanobacteria, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and phosphorus concentrations, as well as periphytic primary production rates. Water and periphyton samples were collected for cultivation and isolation of cyanobacteria from t

Mercury (Hg) methylation in the Florida Everglades is of great environmental concern because of its adverse effects on human and wildlife health through biomagnification in aquatic food webs. Periphyton and flocculant materials (floc) overlaying peat soil are important ecological compartments producing methylmercury (MeHg) in this ecosystem. These compartments retain higher concentrations of MeHg than did soil at study sites across nutrient and/or sulfate gradient(s). To better understand what controls Hg methylation in these compartments, the present study explored the structures and abundanc

Periodic flooding and drying conditions in floodplains affect the mobility and bioavailability of Hg in aquatic sediments and surrounding soils. Sulfurized materials have been recently proposed as Hg sorbents due to their high affinity to bind Hg, while sulfurizing organic matter may enhance methylmercury (MeHg) production, offsetting the beneficial aspects of these materials. This study evaluated hardwood biochar (OAK) and sulfurized-hardwood biochar (MOAK) as soil amendments for controlling Hg release in a contaminated floodplain soil under conditions representative of periodic flooding and

Exposure to dietary sources of methylmercury (MeHg) is the focus of public health concerns with environmental mercury (Hg) contamination. MeHg is formed in anoxic environments by anaerobic microorganisms. This process has been studied mostly with single-species culture incubations, although the relevance of such studies to Hg(II)-methylation in situ is limited because microbial activities in the environment are critically modulated by interactions among microbial functional groups. Here we describe experiments in which Hg(II)-methylation was examined within the context of various microbial syn

A pot experiment was conducted to analyze the characteristics of mercury (Hg) accumulation during the rice growth period in acidic purple paddy soil. Results showed that the soil total Hg concentration was stable with time during the rice growth period, while methylmercury (MeHg) increased greatly. Therefore, the ratio of MeHg/THg was mainly affected by MeHg concentration. THg concentration in rice plant parts followed the trend:root > grain > stalk > leaf > husk at the mature grain stage, while MeHg concentration followed grain > root > stalk > leaf > husk. The average of MeHg/THg in rice (24

The input of mercury (Hg) to ecosystems is estimated to have increased two- to fivefold during the industrial era, and Hg accumulates in aquatic biota as neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg). Escalating anthropogenic land use and climate change are expected to alter the input rates of terrestrial natural organic matter (NOM) and nutrients to aquatic ecosystems. For example, climate change has been projected to induce 10 to 50% runoff increases for large coastal regions globally. A major knowledge gap is the potential effects on MeHg exposure to biota following these ecosystem changes. We monitored

Cellular uptake and export are important steps in the biotransformation of mercury (Hg) by microorganisms. However, the mechanisms of transport across biological membranes remain unclear. Membrane-bound transporters are known to be relevant, but passive permeation may also be involved. Inorganic HgII and methylmercury ([CH3HgII]+) are commonly complexed with thiolate ligands. Here, we have performed extensive molecular dynamics simulations of the passive permeation of HgII and [CH3HgII]+ complexes with thiolate ligands through a model bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. We find that the difference

Understanding the speciation of divalent mercury (Hg(II)) in aquatic systems containing dissolved organic matter (DOM) and sulfide is necessary to predict the conversion of Hg(II) to bioavailable methylmercury. We used X-ray absorption spectroscopy to characterize the structural order of mercury in Hg(II)-DOM-sulfide systems for a range of sulfide concentration (1-100 μM), DOM aromaticity (specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA254)), and Hg(II)-DOM and Hg(II)-DOM-sulfide equilibration times (4-142 h). In all systems, Hg(II) was present as structurally disordered nanocolloidal metacinnabar (β-Hg

Despite the importance of methylmercury (MeHg) as a neurotoxin, we have relatively few good data on partitioning and kinetics of MeHg among organs, particularly across the blood-brain barrier, for mammals that consume large quantities of fish. The objective of this study was to determine the partition coefficients between blood and brain, liver and kidney and fur for MeHg under steady-state conditions and to measure the half-lives for MeHg in these organs. Captive mink (Neovison vison) were fed a diet enriched with two stable isotopes of Hg, Me(199)Hg and Me(201)Hg for a period of 60 days. Aft

The accumulation and species of mercury (Hg) in mosses and lichens collected from high-altitude Tibetan Plateau were studied. The altitudes of the sampling sites spanned from 1983 to 5147 m, and a total of 130 mosses and 52 lichens were analyzed. The total mercury (THg) contents in mosses and lichens were in the ranges of 13.1-273.0 and 20.2-345.9 ng/g, respectively. The average ratios of methylmercury (MeHg) in THg in mosses and lichens were 2.4 % (0.3-11.1 %) and 2.7 % (0.4-9.6 %), respectively, which were higher than those values reported in other regions. The contents of THg in both mosses

Net formation of methylmercury (MeHg) in sediments is known to be affected by the availability of inorganic divalent mercury (Hg(II)) and by the activities of Hg(II) methylating and MeHg demethylating bacteria. Enhanced autochthonous organic matter deposition to the benthic zone, following increased loading of nutrients to the pelagic zone, has been suggested to increase the activity of Hg(II) methylating bacteria and thus the rate of net methylation. However, the impact of increased nutrient loading on the biogeochemistry of mercury (Hg) is challenging to predict as different geochemical pool

Although there has been a decline in U.S. mercury emissions, the effects of this change on remote ecosystems are not well understood. We examine decadal (2004-2015) responses of atmospheric mercury deposition, along with total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations and fluxes, to decrease in mercury emissions at Arbutus Lake-watershed in the remote forested Adirondack region of New York, a biological mercury hotspot. Although wet mercury deposition remains constant, THg deposition has decreased through decreases in litter mercury inputs (17.9 to 10.8 μg/m2-yr) apparently driven
