Black stain may develop on the coronal surfaces of human teeth, and this type of stain is common in the Hong Kong Chinese population. The present study was undertaken to ascertain if the deposit conforms in composition to the black stain found elsewhere, and to describe its ultrastructure using the scanning electron microscope. Gram-stained smears were made from black stain on the teeth of 11 adult Hong Kong Chinese and studied microscopically. A 47-year-old man suffering from colitis ulcerosa developed serious anaemia, oedema, stomatitis with burning tongue, dry skin and erosive lesions with peripheral spreading on the ankles. Histology and electron microscopy showed characteristic signs for necrolytic migratory erythema, zinc deficiency acrodermatitis, or pellagra. Decreased serum zinc level and response to oral zinc substitution finally proved the diagnosis of acquired zinc deficiency.

Malignant liver tumors of infancy are uncommon. In this report the histological and ultrastructural features of a congenital mixed hepatoblastoma in a female infant are described. This report describes light and transmission electron microscopy (LM and EM, respectively) studies of kidneys from five cases of hepatorenal syndrome. The kidneys were removed and fixed for LM and EM between 30 and 120 min after death. All patients had progressive renal failure after admission to the hospital. Scanning electron microscopic evaluation of two intraocular lenses removed at keratoplasty for pseudophakie bullous keratopathy demonstrated apparently viable endothelial cells adherent to their surfaces. These presumably adhered to the lens implants at the time of their insertion and confirm this as a mechanism for endothelial damage and subsequent corneal edema from intraocular lens implantation.

A combined scanning/transmission electron microscopic (SEM/TEM) technique was used to analyze the third cerebral ventricle and underlying tissue of the median eminence of 6 mature rhesus monkeys. In two new cases of centronuclear myopathy, histochemical findings included failure to differentiate fiber type with oxidative enzymes, the presence of core glycogenosis, and core acid phosphatase activity. A case of lymphogranulomatosis inguinalis is reported, in which the definite diagnosis was made by the electronmicroscopical demonstration of Chlamydia lymphogranulomatosis in the lymphnode. The value of this diagnostical method is discussed in regard to verifying the diagnosis and in comparison with other methods. The lifecycle of the Chlamydia lymphogranulomatosis could be demonstrated electronmicroscopically. Its exceptional position in microbiological classification is discussed.
