The role of U.S. military physical therapists during recent combat campaigns.

U.S. military physical therapists have a proud history of providing medical care during operational deployments ranging from war to complex humanitarian emergencies. Regardless of austerity of environment or intensity of hostility, U.S. military physical therapists serve as autonomous providers, evaluating and treating service members with and without physician referral. This perspective article suggests that the versatility of U.S. military physical therapist practice enables them not only to diagnose musculoskeletal injuries but also to provide a wide range of definitive care and rehabilitat

Seroconversion to Japanese Encephalitis Virus Among U.S. Infantry Forces in Korea.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is endemic in the Republic of Korea (ROK), posing a medical threat to more than 29,000 U.S. Forces military personnel currently deployed in the ROK. The objective of this study was to provide data on the risk of JEV exposure among U.S. Forces in the ROK. One thousand U.S. Army Soldiers were randomly selected for the study from the cohort of infantry Soldiers deployed in the ROK for a period of at least 330 days from 2008 to 2011. Pre- and post-deployment serum specimens were tested for the presence of JEV antibodies by plaque reduction neutralization test. A t

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) among UK military personnel whilst deployed in Afghanistan in 2011.

INTRODUCTION: mTBI has been termed the 'signature injury' of recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Most mTBI research uses retrospective accounts of exposure and point of injury symptoms; mTBI is reportedly less common among UK than US Forces. METHODS: This study examined the rate of mTBI exposure and symptoms in 1363 UK military personnel deployed in Afghanistan in 2011 using a self-report questionnaire. Data were collected in the operational location during the 5th month of a 6-month deployment. Personnel reported injuries and symptoms related to six events including fragmentation, blas

Disordered eating among military adolescents presenting for annual health visits at a naval clinic.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to estimate disordered eating behavior (DEB) prevalence in military dependent adolescents, compare it to previous reports in the general adolescent population, and investigate whether obesity, sex and gender, or key military-specific demographics (parent in the military, parental active duty [AD] status, military branch, number of lifetime moves, number of parental deployments) are associated with higher DEB risk. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study of military dependents aged 11-19 years seen in an adolescent clinic at a naval medical cent

Does past military experience impact fear reactivity in active-duty firefighters? Well, it is complicated.

OBJECTIVE: A significant proportion of military veterans successfully transition out of the military into civilian careers as first responders, such as firefighters. Like military service, being a firefighter is a high-risk profession involving exposure to aversive environments. Thus, it is possible that military experience might serve to buffer or exacerbate risk for negative psychological outcomes in firefighters. However, both occupations are associated with increased risk for psychopathology, such as PTSD, and little research has examined the effect of military service on processes that un

Deployment risk and resilience inventory-2 (DRRI-2): an updated tool for assessing psychosocial risk and resilience factors among service members and veterans.

The Deployment Risk and Resilience Inventory (DRRI) is a widely used instrument for assessing deployment-related risk and resilience factors among war veterans. A revision of this instrument was recently undertaken to enhance the DRRI’s applicability across a variety of deployment-related circumstances and military subgroups. The resulting suite of 17 distinct DRRI-2 scales is the product of a multiyear psychometric endeavor that involved (a) focus groups with Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) veterans to inform an assessment of the content validity of original DRRI

Patterns and predictors of treatment delay for mental disorders in a nationally representative, active Canadian military sample.

BACKGROUND: Although mental disorders constitute a significant public health problem in military populations, little is known about whether military members seek mental health treatment in a timely manner. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine delays in making the initial treatment contact for various mental disorders in a military population. DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey-Canadian Forces Supplement. SUBJECTS AND MEASURES: Participants (N = 8441) were assessed for mood and anxiety disorders, using the Wo

Respiratory Illness and Diarrheal Disease Surveillance in U.S. Military Personnel Deployed to Southeast Asia for Military Exercises from 2023-2025.

The Indo-Pacific region hosts several annual military exercises that involve the deployment of thousands of U.S. and partner-nation military personnel. Respiratory and diarrheal diseases pose a significant health risk to exercise participants and represent a substantial portion of medical encounters and lost duty days. We conducted surveillance for respiratory and diarrheal illness at the Cobra Gold and Balikatan military exercises in Thailand and the Philippines from 2023-2025. Through coordination with health providers in the field, military personnel that reported acute symptoms were asked

Pre-deployment aggressiveness, combat exposure and moral injury as contributors to posttraumatic stress symptoms among combatants: A two-year prospective study.

Combatants who are exposed to events which transgress deeply held moral beliefs might face lasting psychopathological outcomes such as Moral Injury (MI) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). However, insight about pre-deployment personality factors which might facilitate the MI process and its negative consequences is sparse. In this prospective study, we examined pre-deployment aggressiveness as a possible predictor of exposure to combat and potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), trauma-related guilt and shame and PTSS among Israeli active-duty combatants. A sample of 335 active-du

Medical problems in military personnel associated with burn pit exposure: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Military personnel serving in Southwest Asia have had frequent exposure to fumes from burn pits. These pits provide a crude way to eliminate waste, including unused food, chemicals, plastic, etc. These exposures can have toxic effects on the respiratory system and other organ systems. This review will provide an overview of the toxic effects of burn pits on the respiratory system and the health of military personnel. METHODS: The PubMed database was searched using the terms military medical, military burn pit AND dyspnea OR deployment OR respirator OR toxicity. All a

Parent or Child Driven? Associations Over Time Between Parental Depressive Symptoms, Parental Locus of Control, and Child Negative Emotionality in US Military Families.

Military personnel are at an elevated risk of depression after combat exposure, which can create significant stress for both the civilian spouses/partners and their children. However, the complex associations between parental mental health, family dynamics, and child characteristics have rarely been examined in post-deployment populations. This study examined the associations between parental depressive symptoms, parental locus of control, and child negative emotionality using a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model in US military families. The findings indicated that for mothers, increase

Intimate Partner Violence in the Canadian Armed Forces: The Role of Family Stress and Its Impact on Well-Being.

Unique demands of military life (e.g., deployment) can have a significant impact on family life. Although most families cope effectively with military life stressors, some may have difficulty adjusting, experiencing marital conflicts, and violence. Evidence suggests that unmanaged occupational demands may create family stress by interfering with efforts to fulfill family duties. This study examined the effects of work-family conflict and marital satisfaction on intimate violence experienced by Canadian Armed Forces members, and the impact of such violence on their psychological well-being (N =

The hidden war: humanitarian surgery in a combat zone.

BACKGROUND: Humanitarian surgical care (HSC) provided during wartime plays a substantial role in military operations, but has not been described or quantified beyond individual experiences. METHODS: Prospective survey was conducted of all military members deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan between 2002 and 2011. RESULTS: There were 266 responses. On average, surgeons had been in practice for 3 years at their 1st deployment and the majority were not fellowship trained. HSC was performed on all body systems and patient populations, including surgery for malignancy. Although 30% of responders perf

Quantitative lung particulate analysis links increased anthracotic pigment burden to burn pit exposure in post-9/11 veterans with distal lung disease.

Military deployment to Southwest Asia and Afghanistan is linked to complex hazardous airborne exposures, but ascertaining the contributions of specific environmental toxicants in causing or contributing to deployment-related distal lung diseases (DDLD) remains challenging. We applied a quantitative microscopy for particulate matter (QM-PM) technique to measure the in situ burden of pigmented and birefringent lung particulates in 24 veterans with DDLD, 10 smokers with respiratory bronchiolitis (RB), and 10 healthy controls. Veterans were more likely to be male (88%) and were significantly young

Perceived Stress Mediates the Association between Deployment Sexual Trauma and Nicotine Dependence in Women Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Rates of smoking and related health consequences are higher for women veterans as compared with their civilian counterparts, and trauma is a known risk factor associated with smoking. Military sexual trauma is prevalent among women veterans and associated with deleterious health outcomes, including tobacco use. However, research has not examined variables that may explain this association. The purpose of the present study was to examine the association between deployment sexual trauma (DST; military sexual trauma that occurs during deployment) and nicotine dependence, and whether p

Sexually transmitted infections and travel.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review considers recent evidence on travel-associated sexual intercourse and sexually transmitted infection (STI) risks and travel with regards to risk behavior and implications of travel on communities. It highlights the lack of research in this area and topics for consideration. RECENT FINDINGS: A population-based study, and others, shows significant levels of sex abroad and risk behavior with inconsistent condom use despite increasing travel advice about risks. There is an increasing association of STIs in military personnel from local rather than deployment-

The structure of PTSD in active-duty marines across the deployment cycle.

OBJECTIVE: There has been significant debate about the optimal factor structure of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In military and veteran samples, most available studies have employed self-report measures, assessed PTSD cross-sectionally, used treatment-seeking samples, and assessed symptoms years after deployment. We extend previous studies by comparing the factor structure of clinician-assessed and self-report Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) PTSD in a nontreatment seeking sample at 4 time points spanning the deployment cycle. METHOD: The
