Acarofauna of Neotropical reptiles: Integrative morphology and vector competence of zoonotic pathogens.

The Neotropical region stands out as a megadiverse area in terms of herpetofauna, hosting more than 4457 species, 2233 of which are distributed across South America. Reptiles are recognized as amplifiers and reservoirs of several pathogens, yet their role in disease cycles and the vectorial potential of their mites and ticks remain poorly understood. These hosts are infested by over 500 species of mites and ticks, classified into 61 genera across 13 families within the orders Trombidiformes (Acariformes), Mesostigmata, and Ixodida (Parasitiformes). Some of these arthropods may serve as vectors

An Itchy Problem: A Clinical Case of Crusted Scabies.

UNLABELLED: Scabies is an infestation of the skin by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. A more severe form called crusted or Norwegian scabies may occur in immunosuppressed patients and the elderly. Crusted scabies mostly differs from normal scabies by the exuberance of its lesions, body distribution and high contagiousness, and requires different and more prolonged treatment. Early recognition of the lesions and isolation precautions are crucial for disease control and prevention of transmission. The authors describe a clinical case of crusted scabies with pruritus and exuberant cutaneous lesions.

Infectious Disease: Bedbugs, Lice, and Mites.

Bedbugs, mites, and scabies are ectoparasites that commonly affect humans. Bedbugs (Cimex species) were once rare in the United States but are now common. They cause intensely pruritic lesions on areas of exposed skin. The bites are highly allergenic and can cause asthma exacerbations or anaphylaxis. Management of bedbug bites involves symptomatic relief of itching and dealing with patient anxiety. Identification and elimination of infestation are most important. Another ectoparasite of concern is lice (Pediculus and Pthirus species), which causes head, body, and pubic infestations. Patients c

The parasitic fauna of the Chiloe wigeon Mareca sibilatrix (Anseriformes: Anatidae) from Ñuble region, Chile.

The Chiloe wigeon, Mareca sibilatrix (Anseriformes: Anatidae), is a native duck distributed mainly in Chile and Argentina. Although it is a common species in the Neotropical realm, studies on its parasitic fauna remain limited. This study aimed to gather additional data on host-parasite associations in M. sibilatrix. Thus, 18 birds from Ñuble region, central Chile, were subjected to parasitic examination. Ectoparasites and endoparasites obtained were stored in 70 % and 80 % ethanol, respectively. A total of 787 parasite individuals were isolated; all birds were parasitized by at least one para

Mites and lice: biology and control.

Dogs and cats frequently encounter a diverse variety of mite and lice species, which may result in mild to severe consequences depending on husbandry conditions, the severity of the infestation, and the nature of the localized or systemic defense mechanisms mobilized by the host in response to the parasite. Some of these external parasites are obvious to detect, identify, and control, although others may offer a significant challenge to the practitioner. Traditional acaricide and insecticide formulations, including dips, sprays, powders, and shampoos, have been used to treat and control these

Records of ectoparasites collected on ospreys from Ontario.

Ectoparasites were collected from ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) in four study areas within the Great Lakes basin of Ontario, Canada. Two parasitic mite (Acari) species, Bonnetella fusca and Analloptes sp., were collected from nestlings. One chewing louse (Mallophaga) Kurodaia haliaeeti was collected from nestlings and adults. Prevalence and intensity of K. haliaeeti were greater in the most northern of the four study areas. Bonnetella prevalence and intensity did not seem to vary greatly across the study areas. New range and host records are presented for B. fusca and Analloptes sp., respectivel

Facial dermatosis associated with Demodex: a case-control study.

Demodex has been considered to be related with multiple skin disorders, but controversy persists. In this case-control study, a survey was conducted with 860 dermatosis patients aged 12 to 84 years in Xi'an, China to identify the association between facial dermatosis and Demodex. Amongst the patients, 539 suffered from facial dermatosis and 321 suffered from non-facial dermatosis. Demodex mites were sampled and examined using the skin pressurization method. Multivariate regression analysis was applied to analyze the association between facial dermatosis and Demodex infestation, and to identify

Mite sensitization in the Scandinavian countries and factors influencing exposure levels.

Mites are the common sources of indoor allergen and play a major role in sensitization and elicitation of allergic disease. In the Scandinavian countries, mite infestations in the home were not common in the past decades. Recent studies show that sensitization to mites among children, particularly in Sweden, is increasing. Similar trends have also been reported in Norway. Poor indoor climate, e.g., high humidity and poor ventilation as a consequence of energy-saving measures, are cited as a possible explanation of this increase. Modern furnishings, e.g., carpets and various kinds of upholstery…

Mite-sensitive asthma of childhood. Trial of avoidance measures.

A trial of the effects of measures designed to reduce exposure to house-dust mites was performed on 14 children with mite-sensitive asthma. These measures reduced mite infestation of the beds and were associated with clinical improvement of asthmatic symptoms. Immunological studies revealed a tendency for levels of total serum IgE to fall during the course of the trial, but no such changes were apparent in the levels of anti-mite specific serum IgE. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. The conclusion of the study is that the use of a plastic mattress cover and the other inexpen

Cheyletiella dermatitis.

A mild dermatitis probably due to Cheyletiella yasguri was observed in 2 persons whose pet dog was infested with this parasite. Cheyletiella mites differ morphologically from sarcoptic mites, which cause canine and human scabies. Treatment of man and dog with 1% gamma benzene hexachloride is usually successful in clearing this condition.

The efficacy of selamectin in the treatment of naturally acquired infestations of sarcoptes scabiei on dogs.

Selamectin, a novel avermectin, was evaluated for its effect on naturally occurring infestations of Sarcoptes scabiei in 42 dogs. In two controlled and masked laboratory studies conducted in the USA and Italy, infested dogs received treatment with either selamectin (6mgkg(-1); range: 6-12mgkg(-1)) or the vehicle only (negative control). Treatments were administered topically to the skin on each animal's back at the base of the neck in front of the scapulae. Study day 0 was defined as the first day of treatment administration. Dogs were treated on days 0 and 30, and efficacy was assessed by cou

Suppressive modulation of host immune responses by Dermanyssus gallinae infestation.

The poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae, PRM) is a blood-sucking ectoparasite in chickens and is one of the most serious threats to poultry farms. Mass infestation with PRMs causes various health problems in chickens, resulting in significant productivity reduction in the poultry industry. Infestation with hematophagous ectoparasites, such as ticks, induces host inflammatory and hemostatic reactions. On the other hand, several studies have reported that hematophagous ectoparasites secrete various immunosuppressants from their saliva to suppress host immune responses to maintain blood suckin

A key volatile infochemical that elicits a strong olfactory response of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus, an important natural enemy of the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae.

Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) emitted from lima bean leaves infested with the two-spotted spider mites Tetranychus urticae strongly attract the predatory mites Neoseiulus californicus. Among these HIPVs, methyl salicylate and linalool can attract the predators. Three green-leaf volatiles (GLVs) of (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate and (E)-2-hexenal, found in the odor blends from T. urticae-infested leaves and physically damaged leaves, can also attract the predators. To search for a strong predator attractant, the olfactory responses of N. californicus to each synthetic compo

Scalp involvement by Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis resembling seborrhoeic dermatitis in two immunocompromised patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Scabies is a common condition in New Zealand but scalp infestation by the mite is not often considered. Topical treatments traditionally do not involve the scalp. We report two cases of immunocompromised patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who had scalp infestation clinically mimicking seborrhoeic dermatitis.
