Re-Modelling 99m-Technetium Pertechnetate Thyroid Uptake; Statistical, Machine Learning and Deep Learning Approaches.

Background: While normal ranges for 99mTc thyroid percentage uptake vary, the seemingly intuitive evaluation of thyroid function does not reflect the complexity of thyroid pathology and biochemical status. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in nuclear medicine has driven problem solving associated with logic and reasoning that warrant re-examination of established benchmarks in thyroid functional assessment. Methods: There were 123 patients retrospectively analysed in the study sample comparing scintigraphic findings to grounded truth established through biochemistry status. Convent

The use of statistical modelling to identify important parameters for the shape of the torso following surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

The surgical strategy in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) aims to recreate the symmetry of the torso. This requires the minimisation of both the size of the scoliosis and the angulation between the sides of the torso, along with the recreation of a normal thoracic kyphosis. This study uses predictive modelling to identify the significance of the value of the pre-operative parameters, and the change in the magnitude of the parameters as a result of an operation on the shape of the torso using the 'most prominent points'; two areas of maximum prominence on either side of the spine with x, y

Statistical method for modeling sequencing data from different technologies in longitudinal studies with application to Huntington disease.

Advancement of gene expression measurements in longitudinal studies enables the identification of genes associated with disease severity over time. However, problems arise when the technology used to measure gene expression differs between time points. Observed differences between the results obtained at different time points can be caused by technical differences. Modeling the two measurements jointly over time might provide insight into the causes of these different results. Our work is motivated by a study of gene expression data of blood samples from Huntington disease patients, which were

A statistical model to identify determinants of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes with different pharmacotherapeutic profiles.

AIM: To develop a statistical model to identify determinants of glycemic control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A database was extracted from patients' records with at least one glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) analysis and with antidiabetic therapy established and stabilized. A logistic regression model was designed to identify the statistical significance of factors associated with glycemic control. RESULTS: Higher probability of success (HbA1c ≤8% [64 mmol/mol]) was found for those who were older in age, those who were men, and those with higher education levels. Increased values for the following va

Research on the Mechanical Properties of Recycled Aggregate Concrete under Uniaxial Compression Based on the Statistical Damage Model.

In this paper, uniaxial compression tests were carried out for recycled aggregate concrete with water cement ratios of 0.38, 0.49, and 0.66 and replacement ratios of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, respectively. The influence of the replacement ratio of recycled aggregate and water cement ratio on the strength, elastic modulus, and deformation characteristics of concrete was discussed. The results show that the replacement rate of recycled aggregate has a significant effect on the macro stress-strain behavior of concrete. In the case of a constant water cement ratio, the peak nominal stress first

Statistical shape modelling provides a responsive measure of morphological change in knee osteoarthritis over 12 months.

OBJECTIVES: Responsive biomarkers are needed to assess the progression of OA and their lack has hampered previous clinical trials. Statistical shape modelling (SSM) from radiographic images identifies those at greatest risk of fast-progression or joint replacement, but its sensitivity to change has not previously been measured. This study evaluates the responsiveness of SSM in knee OA in a 12-month observational study. METHODS: A total of 109 people were recruited who had undergone knee radiographs in the previous 12 months, and were grouped based on severity of radiographic OA (Kellgren-Lawr

A Novel, Dynamic Statistical Model for Predicting Patient Satisfaction with Fundoplication Based on Pre-Operative Symptom Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Fundoplication provides excellent control of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), but there remain a number of unsatisfied patients who have proven difficult to identify pre-operatively. We hypothesised that pre-operative symptom patterns can predict of the risk of post-operative dissatisfaction. METHODS: Pre-operative symptoms and post-operative satisfaction were measured using standardised questionnaires along with routine investigations. These data were used to calculate our novel pre-operative risk of dissatisfaction (PROD) score. Potential pre-operative prognostic marker

Simulation, identification and statistical variation in cardiovascular analysis (SISCA) - A software framework for multi-compartment lumped modeling.

It has not yet been possible to obtain modeling approaches suitable for covering a wide range of real world scenarios in cardiovascular physiology because many of the system parameters are uncertain or even unknown. Natural variability and statistical variation of cardiovascular system parameters in healthy and diseased conditions are characteristic features for understanding cardiovascular diseases in more detail. This paper presents SISCA, a novel software framework for cardiovascular system modeling and its MATLAB implementation. The framework defines a multi-model statistical ensemble appr

To be or not to be associated: power study of four statistical modeling approaches to identify parasite associations in cross-sectional studies.

A growing number of studies are reporting simultaneous infections by parasites in many different hosts. The detection of whether these parasites are significantly associated is important in medicine and epidemiology. Numerous approaches to detect associations are available, but only a few provide statistical tests. Furthermore, they generally test for an overall detection of association and do not identify which parasite is associated with which other one. Here, we developed a new approach, the association screening approach, to detect the overall and the detail of multi-parasite associations.

Statistical modeling of occupational chlorinated solvent exposures for case-control studies using a literature-based database.

OBJECTIVES: Occupational exposure assessment for population-based case-control studies is challenging due to the wide variety of industries and occupations encountered by study participants. We developed and evaluated statistical models to estimate the intensity of exposure to three chlorinated solvents-methylene chloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and trichloroethylene-using a database of air measurement data and associated exposure determinants. METHODS: A measurement database was developed after an extensive review of the published industrial hygiene literature. The database of nearly 3000 me

Modeling and optimization of biopolymer (polyhydroxyalkanoates) production from ice cream residue by novel statistical experimental design.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are thermoplastic polyesters synthesized by Ralstonia eutropha and other bacteria as a form of intracellular carbon and energy storage and are accumulated as lipid inclusions in the cytoplasm of these bacteria. The modeling and optimization of PHA production by fermentation from industrial waste (ice cream residue) was studied by employing statistical experimental design methods. A series of iterative experimental designs was used to find optimal factor conditions (medium components and fermentation process time) in the order of fractional factorial design, path of

Performance of a statistical model to predict stroke outcome in the context of a large, simple, randomized, controlled trial of feeding.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Statistical models to predict the outcome of stroke patients have several uses. Their utility depends on their predictive accuracy in patients other than those on whom they were developed (ie, external validity). We sought to test the external validity of some recently described models in patients enrolled in the FOOD (Feed Or Ordinary Diet) trial: a large randomized trial evaluating feeding policies in patients with stroke. METHODS: The predictive variables were collected during a telephone call to randomize the patient a median of 5 days after stroke onset. Patients

Statistical modelling of injury severity, with special reference to driver and front seat passenger in single-vehicle crashes.

First, the statistical analysis of injury severity is introduced by considering the following topics: Interpretation of the recorded grades of injury severity (e.g. fatal, serious, slight, none) as divisions of a continuous scale. The possible presence of errors in recording injury severity. How this is used in the statistical analysis of injury severity data, including discussion of computing methods. Secondly, attention is turned to data in which the severities of injury to two people in the same crash is given. British accident data for 1969-72 has been processed to give a cross-tabulation

Early prediction of the outbreak risk of dengue fever in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, Vietnam: An analysis based on Google trends and statistical models.

Dengue fever (DF), caused by the Dengue virus through the Aedes mosquito vector, is a dangerous infectious disease with the potential to become a global epidemic. Vietnam, particularly Ba Ria-Vung Tau (BRVT) province, is facing a high risk of DF. This study aims to determine the relationship between the search volume for DF on Google Trends and DF cases in BRVT province, thereby constructing a model to predict the early outbreak risk of DF locally. Using Poisson regression (adjusted by quasi-Poisson), considering the lagged effect of Google Trends Index (GTI) search volume on DF cases, and rem

Characterisation of long-term cancer survivors and application of statistical cure models: a protocol for an observational follow-up study in patients with colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Improved colorectal cancer (CRC) survival rates have been reported over the last years, with more than half of these patients surviving more than 5 years after the initial diagnosis. Better understanding these so-called long-term survivors could be very useful to further improve their prognosis as well as to detect other problems that may cause a significant deterioration in their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Cure models provide novel statistical tools to better estimate the long-term survival rate for cancer and to identify characteristics that are differentially associ

Time series patterns of dengue and associated climate variables in Bangladesh and Singapore (2000-2020): a comparative study of statistical models to forecast dengue cases.

This study explores the effect of climate factors on dengue incidence in Bangladesh and Singapore from 2000 to 2020. Various forecasting models, including Seasonal ARIMA, Poisson regression, artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), and other statistical techniques, were applied to forecast dengue trends and generate future datasets. The results showed that Bangladesh has higher mean temperatures. The Poisson regression indicated that rainfall positively correlated with dengue cases in Bangladesh, while humidity and sunshine showed negative associations. In Singapore, te

Linking shape and clinical outcomes: Statistical shape model of Bidirectional Glenn connection in congenital single ventricle patients.

In patients with congenital single ventricle physiology, the Bidirectional Glenn procedure is a critical intermediate step toward Fontan circulation. Despite technical advances, morbidity and mortality remain significant. While left pulmonary artery (LPA) stenosis is a recognized complication, the broader impact of 3D anatomical variations on outcomes remains poorly understood. We aimed to characterize morphological variability of the superior cavopulmonary connection (SCPC) following the Bidirectional Glenn and assess its relationship with clinical outcomes. Statistical Shape Modeling (SSM) w
