Molecular Typing of Chikungunya Virus at a Regional Advanced Healthcare Facility in Central India: A Three-Year Prospective Study.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has emerged as a significant public health concern due to its tendency to re-emerge, causing massive outbreaks in India and globally. Recent outbreaks demonstrate the virus's ability to spread rapidly, evade the host's immune responses, and lead to debilitating illnesses. Despite advances in public health surveillance and vector control, the cyclical, unpredictable resurgence of CHIKV underscores gaps in our understanding of its molecular dynamics and epidemiological patterns that vary by region. This study investigates the molecular and phylogenetic characteristics o

Molecular typing and seroepidemiology of pathogenic Leptospira spp. of domestic animals in Gilan province, northern Iran during 2021-2023.

BACKGROUND: Leptospira, a pathogenic bacterial organism, causes human leptospirosis when it infects mammals. There are different serovars of Leptospira, each of which is adapted to a specific animal host. Adaptation occurs dynamically in different hosts and changes the distribution and clinical manifestations of serovars. Variable-number tandem repeats (VNTRs) have been used to identify Leptospira interrogans strains. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to conduct seroepidemiology and molecular typing of pathogenic Leptospira isolated from domestic animals in Gilan province. METHODS: A total…

Molecular Characterization of German Acinetobacter baumannii Isolates and Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) Analysis Based on WGS Reveals Novel STs.

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is a major cause of severe nosocomial infections worldwide. The emergence of infections associated with A. baumannii poses a significant health risk in Germany. A. baumannii is part of the ACB complex and is difficult to distinguish from other species phenotypically, necessitating its reliable identification. The current study analyzed 89 A. baumannii strains from human and non-human origins by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI-TOF) and PCR detection of intrinsic blaOXA-51-like carbapenemase, blaOXA-23-like, blaOXA-24-like, blaO

New Short Tandem Repeat-Based Molecular Typing Method for Pneumocystis jirovecii Reveals Intrahospital Transmission between Patients from Different Wards.

Pneumocystis pneumonia is a severe opportunistic infection in immunocompromised patients caused by the unusual fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii. Transmission is airborne, with both immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals acting as a reservoir for the fungus. Numerous reports of outbreaks in renal transplant units demonstrate the need for valid genotyping methods to detect transmission of a given genotype. Here, we developed a short tandem repeat (STR)-based molecular typing method for P. jirovecii. We analyzed the P. jirovecii genome and selected six genomic STR markers located on diffe…

Detection and typing of human herpesvirus 6 by molecular methods in specimens from patients diagnosed with encephalitis or meningitis.

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) was detected in specimens from patients hospitalized with symptoms of encephalitis or meningitis. A real-time PCR assay was developed which has a linear dynamic range of 5 to 5 x 10(6) copies of HHV-6 and a sensitivity of five gene copies per reaction. While the assay detects both subtypes, HHV-6A and HHV-6B, it is specific and does not cross-react with a selected specificity panel. A total of 1,482 patient specimens, which were collected between 2003 and 2007, were tested; 26 specimens from 24 patients were found to be positive for HHV-6 by real-time PCR. The HHV-6
