Narrative therapy group intervention for nurses' moral resilience: A feasibility study.

BackgroundEthically complex care exposes nurses to persistent moral distress, harming well-being, integrity, and care quality. Moral resilience offers a targeted response, but intervention evidence is scarce. Because narrative therapy enables meaning-making and identity re-authoring, it may cultivate moral agency and integrity.AimTo develop and refine a narrative therapy-based group intervention for nurses' moral resilience and to examine its feasibility and acceptability in a pilot study, with exploratory assessment of outcome trends.DesignA preliminary group intervention program aimed at sup

A cognitive model of moral and nonmoral self-criticism: the role of judgment criteria.

Several authors have developed authoritative theoretical models of self-criticism (SC), each offering unique perspectives that emphasize different aspects of its phenomenology. Through a critical examination of these models, this article proposes a new cognitive framework: the Cognitive model of self-criticism. The primary aim is to conceptualize the judgment criteria through which individuals evaluate themselves as a central cognitive component of the self-critical process and to provide a theoretical framework for explaining the heterogeneity of SC. The model emphasizes the judgment criteria

Sustaining Emergency Medicine: Workforce Wellbeing, Moral Integrity and the Power of Action.

Sustainability in emergency medicine is often framed in environmental terms, yet workforce wellbeing is equally central to the specialty's long-term viability. Across Australasia, EDs are experiencing sustained access block, rising demand and staffing pressures, contributing to high rates of burnout, moral injury and workforce attrition. These phenomena are not individual failings but signals of systemic strain. This article reframes ED workforce wellbeing and retention as core sustainability issues. It argues that clinician involvement in organisational redesign, high-value care initiatives a

The Moral Competence Test in healthcare education: a critique based on informal logic.

The article critically examines Georg Lind's Moral Competence Test, which is often used to assess the moral abilities of healthcare professionals and students. Test results have purportedly shown that students' moral competence declines during their studies; they have also failed to demonstrate the effectiveness of most ethics education methods. Based partly on Kohlberg's theory of moral development, the test presents moral dilemmas followed by arguments for and against the protagonists' decisions. Each argument corresponds to one of Kohlberg's stages of moral development. Participants rate ho

Moral injury in Dutch treatment-seeking veterans: a latent profile analysis.

Background: Moral injury (MI) is a construct distinct from, yet related to, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To date, no study has assessed MI among Dutch treatment-seeking veterans using a validated measure. Objective: This study aimed to (a) examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Dutch Expressions of Moral Injury Scale - Military Version (EMIS-M); (b) to identify profiles of PTSD and MI outcomes among treatment-seeking Dutch veterans, as well as their associations with comorbid psychopathology and family functioning.Method: Participants were 455 Dutch treatment-

Ritualized embodiment and moral self-cultivation: a Confucian model of psychological transformation.

This article develops a cross-cultural theoretical model of moral-psychological transformation by reinterpreting Confucian self-cultivation as a system of ritualized embodiment. Situated within theoretical and philosophical psychology, the article asks how bodily discipline, ritual form, and culturally mediated repetition may reorganize attention, affect, conduct, habit, and moral agency. Drawing on embodied cognition, moral psychology, ritual theory, cultural psychology, and Confucian philosophical discourse, the study proposes the Confucian Embodied Self-Cultivation Model. The model is groun

Acute lorazepam administration does not significantly affect moral attitudes or judgments.

Recent scientific studies exploring the neuropsychological foundations of moral decision-making have shown that moral attitudes and evaluations are significantly influenced by emotion, particularly negative emotionality, as well as personality traits such as neuroticism. Further psychopharmacological research has observed that GABAergic agonists are capable of influencing moral decision-making by modifying anxiety-related emotional negativity and/or through cognitive modulation. The aim of this double-blind, crossover design, placebo-controlled study is to evaluate said GABAergic modulation on

The Effect of Moral Judgment on Bystander Cooperation Behavior: The Role of Personal Force.

BACKGROUND: While extensive research has examined the antecedents of utilitarian moral judgment, its subsequent social consequences remain less explored. Drawing on the moral reciprocal partner selection model and the moral intuition modular myopia hypothesis, this study investigates the impact of utilitarian moral judgment on bystander cooperation behavior and the moderating role of personal force. OBJECTIVES: This research aims to determine whether utilitarian moral judgments, compared to non-utilitarian ones, decrease bystander cooperation (Hypothesis 1), and whether this effect is more pr

Moral Injury in Mental Health Nursing-A Qualitative Descriptive Study in Switzerland.

Moral injury (MI) is the damage done to one's conscience or moral compass when one perpetrates, witnesses, or fails to prevent acts that transgress one's own moral beliefs. There are numerous associations between MI and various mental health outcomes, including burnout, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and increased job turnover. However, there has been no research or official study investigating MI in mental health nurses (MHNs) in Switzerland. This study aimed to examine and describe the spectrum and impact of MI in Swiss MHN. Demographic data and descriptions of MI in mental health nur

Navigating the ethical landscape of parenteral nutrition: Balancing care and moral principles.

Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a life-sustaining therapy for patients unable to meet nutrition needs via enteral routes, but its use presents significant ethical complexity. This narrative review provides clinicians with a practical, principle-based framework to navigate the ethical dilemmas inherent in PN across diverse clinical contexts. Grounded in the four pillars of medical ethics-autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice-the review explores decision-making challenges in vulnerable populations, long-term PN, and end-of-life care. Clinically relevant scenarios are examined, includin

Parents (of minors) are not surrogates: acknowledging (finally) the unique moral space of parents.

A common conflation happens both in everyday discussions in medicine as well as in the medical literature-namely, equating 'parents of minors' with 'surrogate decision makers.' It is important for pediatric clinicians and ethicists to stop using language that confuses and obscures the important difference between surrogates and parents in ways that affect the ethics of decision-making for minors. Specifically, parents of minor children are morally different than surrogates, and by using surrogate language, a misunderstanding arises that distorts the moral space and relevant obligations that pe

Why moral judgements change across variations of trolley-like problems.

In the standard 'trolley problem', respondents must decide whether to save a condemned group of individuals by sacrificing a safe bystander. Although respondents often are willing to sacrifice the bystander in some circumstances (e.g., by pulling a lever), they are loath to sacrifice the bystander in others (e.g., by pushing the bystander off a footbridge). This difference in responding has been explained via a Dual Process theory of moral judgements (DPT). DPT, however, is a classic boxes-and-arrows model that only makes directional predictions. Iranian perioperative nurses' lived experiences of moral distress: A phenomenological study.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was performed with the aim of exploring the experiences of moral distress among perioperative nurses in Iran, specifically focusing on their encounters with anaesthetised patients. Despite its significance, this issue has received limited attention from researchers. METHODS: A phenomenological study based on Van Manen's six-research-activities approach was employed in this study. The phenomenon was perioperative nurses experience of moral distress. Perioperative nurses in two general hospitals in Iran were purposefully invited as participants. Semi-structured indi

Explicating the process of moral courage in clinical nurses: a grounded theory study.

Moral courage in nurses is the product of a complex process and can be enhanced by identifying the steps through which nurses make morally courageous decisions. This qualitative study aimed to explicate the process of moral courage in clinical nurses and present a descriptive model. The study was conducted in Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences in 2022 using the grounded theory approach. Twenty-one clinical nurses were selected through purposive and theoretical sampling. Data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's 2015 approach and data management was supported by MAXQDA software (vers

Will Human-Animal Chimeras Cause Moral Confusion? Exploring Public Attitudes.

Recent medical research involving human-monkey chimeras, human brain organoids in rats, and the transplantation of a gene-edited pig heart and gene-edited pig kidneys in living human beings have intensified the debate about whether we should create human-animal chimeras for biomedical purposes and, if so, how we should treat them. Influential views in the debate frequently appeal to assumptions regarding how people will react to such chimeras. It has, for example, been argued that the most important objection against creating such chimeras is that this will result in inexorable moral confusion

A matter of right or wrong: Divisive attributes of moralized science and technology attitudes.

In recent years, scholars have theorized that one factor enflaming public divides over science and technology is moralization: an individual's perception that their position on an issue is rooted in fundamental moral right and wrong. In this article, I provide evidence for this proposition across five pre-registered hypotheses about the divisive attributes of moralized attitudes in the context of science and technology. Using public opinion data in the United States on three issues-combating climate change, developing gene editing therapies for humans, and labeling genetically modified food-th

Exploring the potential of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for moral injury: A scoping review.

This scoping review addresses the need to comprehensively explore the potential of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) to facilitate recovery from moral injury. Moral injury (MI), characterized by profound psychological distress arising from morally challenging experiences, has garnered increased attention as a complex mental health concern with significant functional sequelae, especially in the context of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There is growing interest in exploring alternative therapeutic approaches, with psychedelics emerging as an exciting potential intervention, as mo

Alcohol attention bias modulates neural engagement during moral processing.

The neurobiology of typical moral cognition involves the interaction of frontal, limbic, and temporoparietal networks. There is still much to be understood mechanistically about how moral processing is disrupted; such understanding is key to combating antisociality. Neuroscientific models suggest a key role for attention mechanisms in atypical moral processing. We hypothesized that attention-bias toward alcohol cues in alcohol use disorder (AUD) leads to a failure to properly engage with morally relevant stimuli, reducing moral processing. We recruited patients with AUD (n = 30) and controls (

Social decision making in binge drinking: An exploration through moral dilemmas.

OBJECTIVE: The continuum hypothesis proposes that binge drinking and severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD) share qualitatively similar cognitive and emotional impairments. In SAUD, these deficits have a demonstrated impact on social decision making, resulting in a utilitarian bias. Namely, when confronted with moral dilemmas, patients with SAUD tend to focus on the consequences of their actions rather than on social norms. However, social decision-making abilities remain unexplored in binge drinking. We offered the first insights on the generalization of the continuum hypothesis to social decisio

BCG and bladder cancer. Forty-eight years after Morales report.

Although BCG use as an anticancer drug was nearly abandoned due to the poor results in most tumors, in 1976 Morales reported a relevant reduction in recurrence with intravesical BCG in few patients affected by NMIBC. Since then BCG was globally accepted as an empirical and effective therapy in treating Tis and preventing recurrence of intermediate and high risk NMIBC. Forty-eight years after Morales' report, although some open questions remain object of debate, we have been able to find answers to many doubts improving BCG activity and toxicity. We better select patients undergoing BCG and man
