BACKGROUND: In common with many South East Asian countries, Malaysia is endemic for dengue. Dengue control in Malaysia is currently based on reactive vector management within 24 h of a dengue case being reported. Preventive rather than reactive vector control approaches, with combined interventions, are expected to improve the cost-effectiveness of dengue control programs. The principal objective of this cluster randomized controlled trial is to quantify the effectiveness of a preventive integrated vector management (IVM) strategy on the incidence of dengue as compared to routine vector contro

In this paper, we propose a sex-structured entomological model that serves as a basis for design of control strategies relying on releases of sterile male mosquitoes (Aedes spp) and aiming at elimination of the wild vector population in some target locality. We consider different types of releases (constant and periodic impulsive), providing sufficient conditions to reach elimination. However, the main part of the paper is focused on the study of the periodic impulsive control in different situations. When the size of wild mosquito population cannot be assessed in real time, we propose the so-

Insecticide resistance poses a significant threat to the efficacy of current vector control interventions and jeopardizes recent gains in malaria control. Several insecticides developed for agricultural pest control have demonstrated promising efficacy against malaria vectors, particularly Anopheles mosquitoes. This review critically evaluates existing research on the potential repurposing of agricultural insecticides as tools to overcome resistance challenges associated with conventional vector control methods. We synthesize recent evidence highlighting the effectiveness of agricultural insec

Control of malaria uses a variety of tools including drugs, vaccines, and insecticidal strategies to reduce parasite transmission by mosquito vectors. A new tool that eliminates parasites in mosquitoes by delivering antimalarials to the insects rather than infected people is emerging as a simple, relatively inexpensive malaria control strategy. In this Chapter, we review antimalarials that show efficacy in mosquitoes, effective methods to deliver compounds into the insects, and strategies to optimize this new tool as a useful component of the arsenal of strategies to combat malaria.

Despite significant progress in malaria control over the past two decades, the disease remains a major challenge. This review explores novel mosquito-targeting and transmission-blocking solutions to combat the growing concerns of antimalarial and insecticide resistance. The emergence of drug-resistant Plasmodium spp. parasites and insecticide-resistant mosquitoes, coupled with changes in vector behaviour and the spread of invasive species, necessitates the development of new control strategies. We examine a range of approaches ranging from low-tech repurposing of existing technologies to high-

To maintain effective malaria control, endemic countries must reinforce their short-term commodity-based approaches with sustainable, longer-term strategies. In Africa, where only a few highly-efficient Anopheles vectors drive most malaria transmission, we propose a two-tier strategy to safeguard control gains. First, aggressively pursue an expanded interpretation of species sanitation by targeting ecological vulnerabilities of primary vectors to suppress or eliminate them. Second, gradually build structural resilience through improved housing and environmental management. Future innovations,

Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral illness transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, continues to be a significant public health burden in tropical and subtropical regions. Traditional vector control methods, primarily reliant on insecticides and larvicides, face challenges because of emerging insecticide resistance and limited community engagement. This narrative review explores co-creation as a collaborative approach to dengue control, where communities actively participate in designing and implementing solutions. Through an examination of existing literature, we discuss the rationale for co-creati

BACKGROUND: Odour-baited traps are useful for vector surveillance and control. However, most existing traps have shown inconsistent recapture rates across different mosquito species, necessitating the need for more effective and efficient traps. The MTego trap with integrated thermal stimuli has been developed as an alternative trap. This study was undertaken to determine and compare the efficacy of the MTego trap to that of the Biogents (BG) modular BG-Pro (BGP) trap for sampling different mosquito species in a semi-field system.
METHODS: Fully balanced Latin square design experiments (no-ch

Malaria is among the world's deadliest diseases, predominantly affecting Sub-Saharan Africa and killing over half a million people annually. Controlling the principal vector, the mosquito Anopheles gambiae, as well as other anophelines, is among the most effective methods to control disease spread. Here, we develop a genetic population suppression system termed Ifegenia (inherited female elimination by genetically encoded nucleases to interrupt alleles) in this deadly vector. In this bicomponent CRISPR-based approach, we disrupt a female-essential gene, femaleless (fle), demonstrating complete

Many factors influence the success or failure of malaria vector control program such as political will, leadership, sustained funding, robustness of healthcare system and others. In addition, updated knowledge and information about the triad of host, parasite, and vector is of paramount importance. Vector bionomics studies that determine mosquito behavior in terms of feeding, resting, biting, mating, breeding, longevity, vectorial capacity, and response to different insecticides are a step towards enhancing our understanding. In the present work, we have compiled studies conducted in India ove

BACKGROUND: Vector surveillance is an essential public health tool to aid in the prediction and prevention of mosquito borne diseases. This study compared spatial and temporal trends of vector surveillance indices for Aedes vectors in the southern Philippines, and assessed potential links between vector indices and climate factors.
METHODS: We analysed routinely collected larval and pupal surveillance data from residential areas of 14 cities and 51 municipalities during 2013-2018 (House, Container, Breteau and Pupal Indices), and used linear regression to explore potential relationships betwe

Dengue remains one of the most serious and widespread mosquito-borne viral infections in human beings, with serious health problems or even death. About 50 to 100 million people are newly infected annually, with almost 2.5 billion people living at risk and resulting in 20,000 deaths. Dengue virus infection is especially transmitted through bites of Aedes mosquitos, hugely spread in tropical and subtropical environments, mostly found in urban and semiurban areas. Unfortunately, there is no particular therapeutic approach, but prevention, adequate consciousness, detection at earlier stage of vir

Mosquitoes are the main vectors of many infectious diseases, including malaria and yellow fever, which seriously threaten human health across the world. In addition to the use of chemical insecticides, genetic control is a new attempt to currently available interventions used for mosquito vector control. In terms of ecological safety, however, symbiotic control as a novel approach has been proposed for mosquito control. Since there are multiple symbiotic microflora inhabiting in a variety of tissues of mosquitoes, including the digestive tract, they may affect the transmission of mosquito-born…

Mosquitoes constitute the major living beings causing human deaths in the world. They are vectors of malaria, yellow fever, dengue, zika, filariases, chikungunya, among other diseases. New strategies to control/eradicate mosquito populations are based on newly developed genetic manipulation techniques. However, genetic transformation of mosquitoes is a major technical bottleneck due to low efficiency, the need of sophisticated equipment, and highly trained personnel. The present report shows the transgenerational genetic transformation of Aedes aegypti, using the particle inflow gun (PIG), by

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) represent a key threat for millions of humans and animals worldwide, vectoring important pathogens and parasites, including malaria, dengue, filariasis, and Zika virus. Besides mosquito-borne diseases, cancers figure among the leading causes of mortality worldwide. It is expected that annual cancer cases will rise from 14 million in 2012 to 22 million within the next two decades. Notably, there are few contrasting evidences of the relationship between cancer and mosquito-borne diseases, with special reference to malaria. However, analogies at the cellular level

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Mosquito vectors are disease-causing insects, responsible for various life-threatening vector-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, malaria, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis. In practice, synthetic insecticides are used to control the mosquito vector, but, the continuous usage of synthetic insecticides is toxic to human health resulting in communicable diseases. Non-toxic biocontrol agents such as bacteria, fungus, plants, and mosquito densoviruses play a vital role in controlling mosquitoes. Community awareness of mosquito biocontrol agents is required to control ve

BACKGROUND: Novel interventions for mosquito-borne disease control which release modified mosquitoes that are sterilised or genetically modified to cause offspring inviability are progressing towards field applications. Cluster randomised control trials (CRCTs) could provide robust assessment of intervention efficacy in suppressing mosquito populations in field environments, but guidance on designing CRCTs to detect mosquito suppression impacts is limited.
RESULTS: We developed statistical models to simulate CRCTs, informed by a 5-year time series measuring densities of malaria vector species
