Biodegradation of Polystyrene by Tenebrio molitor, Galleria mellonella, and Zophobas atratus Larvae and Comparison of Their Degradation Effects.

Plastic waste pollution and its difficult degradation process have aroused widespread concern. Research has demonstrated that the larvae of Tenebrio molitor (yellow mealworm), Galleria mellonella (greater wax moth), and Zophobas atratus (superworm) possess a biodegradation ability for polystyrene (PS) within the gut microbiota of these organisms. In this study, the difference in PS degradation and the changes of the gut microbiota were compared before and after feeding PS. The results showed that superworm had the strongest PS consumption capacity and the highest survival rate during the 30 d

Development of a glial network in the olfactory nerve: role of calcium and neuronal activity.

In adult olfactory nerves of mammals and moths, a network of glial cells ensheathes small bundles of olfactory receptor axons. In the developing antennal nerve (AN) of the moth Manduca sexta, the axons of olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) migrate from the olfactory sensory epithelium toward the antennal lobe. Here we explore developmental interactions between ORN axons and AN glial cells. During early stages in AN glial-cell migration, glial cells are highly dye coupled, dividing glia are readily found in the nerve and AN glial cells label strongly for glutamine synthetase. By the end of this …

Hair and Scalp Manifestations in Secondary Syphilis: Epidemiology, Clinical Features and Trichoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Syphilitic alopecia (SA) is mainly described in single case reports, and there are only a few epidemiological studies. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical and dermoscopic features of SA in patients with secondary syphilis and to record its actual prevalence. METHODS: All patients with a diagnosis of secondary syphilis were clinically and trichoscopically evaluated in search of hair and scalp alterations. RESULTS: Five of 12 patients (41.6%) diagnosed with secondary syphilis had SA. The 'moth-eaten' pattern was detected in 4 patients (80% of cases): 1 had 'essential' SA, where

Insects and other arthropods used as drugs in Korean traditional medicine.

Insects and other arthropods appear in pharmacopoeias of Korean traditional medicine, but little was known about their use in modern South Korea. Interviews were conducted with 20 traditional medicine doctors at clinics in South Korea's Kyeong Dong Shijang in Seoul--one of the world's largest traditional drug markets--to learn about current patterns of usage. Seventeen products are prescribed and the use of arthropod drugs is stable or increasing. Centipedes (Scolopendra spp.) used primarily to treat arthritis and the silk moth fungus (Beauveria bassiana, which infects silk moth larvae) used m

Importance of tropomyosin in the allergy to household arthropods. Cross-reactivity with other invertebrate extracts.

The aim of the study was to investigate the involvement of the actin binding protein tropomyosin in the allergic sensitization of patients to household arthropods, as well as to study its panallergenic character in relation to other invertebrate extracts. Three arthropod extracts were prepared, namely fly (Musca domestica), moth (Ephestia spp.) and spider (Tegenaria spp.), and used to evaluate by cutaneous and RAST tests a population of 100 household arthropod allergic patients. Twenty-nine sera were selected for the subsequent SDS-PAGE Immunoblotting assays. IgE binding bands at 36, 34, 31, 2

Myocardial Infarction in a 7-Year-Old Girl with Polyarteritis Nodosa.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare systemic vasculitis that affects small to medium-sized arteries. It could affect any organ including the heart. However coronary artery involvements are very rare. We describe a young girl who presented following a histopathological diagnosis of PAN with acute chest pain, high serum troponin, and progressive ischemic changes in the electrocardiogram (ECG). Induction of remission of her disease was done with six-moths Cyclophosphamide infusions and pulse corticosteroids. In addition to anticoagulation and dual antithrombotic therapy, the disease remission wa…

[The treatment of atopic rhinitis in children with an accelerated variant of specific immunotherapy].

An intensified course of specific immunotherapy (36 days) has been tried in 72 children with atopic vasomotor rhinitis. The age of the patients ranged from 5 to 15 years. The effectiveness of the treatment was assessed by nasal mucosa function, cellular and humoral immunity measured throughout the treatment and 6 moths after it. Good results were obtained in 71.1% of the patients, satisfactory in 24.4%, unresponsive children made up 4.2%. No complications occurred. During the treatment adverse reactions were noted in 11 children. Short-term discontinuation of the allergen administration correc…

[Unexpected recurrence of malaria].

Malaria should always be ruled out in patients with fever who visited the tropics in the recent past. Even a long period of time after returning or after antimalarial treatment, malaria may be present due to relaps, recrudescence or a postponed first episode. Hypnozoites of P. vivax and P. ovale are dormant stages in the liver and not detectable in the blood, but can wake moths after inoculation. In this case, we show a patient with a mixed infection with P. falciparum and P. ovale. However, due to the absence of the erythrocytic stage of P. ovale, this species was not detected and caused symp…

Hepatitis and bone destruction as uncommon manifestations of early syphilis. Report of a case.

We describe a patient with a painful lytic lesion of the clavicle and a granuloma of the liver in late secondary syphilis. The classic "moth-eaten" alopecia of the scalp as well as eyebrows and eyelashes suggested syphilis, although an initial false-negative VDRL test for syphilis (prozone phenomenon) caused a delay in diagnosis. Bone as well as liver involvement in early syphilis may be more common than previously recognized.

The microbiome of the wood-dwelling Cossus cossus (Lepidoptera: Cossidae): a functional approach.

Microorganisms associated with insects can offer diverse benefits to their host, but the degree to which hosts rely on them varies across insect groups. Although research has increasingly focused on Lepidoptera, many of which are important pest species, key aspects of their microbiome's stability and functional importance remain ambiguous and seem context-dependent. The caterpillars of the goat moth, Cossus cossus (Linnaeus), which develop over 2 to 5 years within trunks of deciduous trees and consume a wood-based diet rich in recalcitrant lignin, provide an intriguing model to examine potenti

Novel acetylcholinesterase target site for malaria mosquito control.

Current anticholinesterase pesticides were developed during World War II and are toxic to mammals because they target a catalytic serine residue of acetylcholinesterases (AChEs) in insects and in mammals. A sequence analysis of AChEs from 73 species and a three-dimensional model of a malaria-carrying mosquito (Anopheles gambiae) AChE (AgAChE) reported here show that C286 and R339 of AgAChE are conserved at the opening of the active site of AChEs in 17 invertebrate and four insect species, respectively. Both residues are absent in the active site of AChEs of human, monkey, dog, cat, cattle, rab

Novel insect orcokinins: characterization and neuronal distribution in the brains of selected dicondylian insects.

Orcokinins are a family of myotropic neuropeptides identified in various decapod crustaceans and recently in a cockroach. Their presence in the crustacean nervous system and hemolymph suggests that they act as hormones and as locally acting neuromodulators. To provide further evidence for the existence of orcokinins in insects, we identified a novel orcokinin-related peptide in the locust Schistocerca gregaria and used an antiserum against Asn13-orcokinin for immunostaining in the brains of selected dicondylian insects, including a silverfish, three polyneopteran species (a cockroach and two l

Venomous protease of aphid soldier for colony defense.

In social aphids, morphological, behavioral, and physiological differences between soldiers and normal insects are attributed to differences in gene expression between them, because they are clonal offspring parthenogenetically produced by the same mothers. By using cDNA subtraction, we identified a soldier-specific cysteine protease of the family cathepsin B in a social aphid, Tuberaphis styraci, with a second-instar soldier caste. The cathepsin B gene was specifically expressed in soldiers and first-instar nymphs destined to be soldiers. The cathepsin B protein was preferentially produced in

Host-specific pathogenicity of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora in Galleria mellonella and Plodia interpunctella larvae.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are useful as biological agents for the control of insect pests and disease vectors. They are also important for understanding nematode pathogenicity and host anti-nematode response. The pathogenic properties of EPNs towards insects are attributed to effector molecules, which are produced by both the nematodes and their symbiotic bacteria during infection. Here, we hypothesized that the contribution of the mutualistic bacterium Photorhabdus luminescens to the virulence of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is host-dependent. To test this hypothesis, we compared the

A study on the clinical manifestations in lepidopterism.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to hairs of caterpillars and moths are collectively termed as lepidopterism. Clinical manifestations include cutaneous presentation of localized stinging reaction with wheals or vesiculation, acute urticarial papules and plaques, ophthalmic, oropharyngeal involvement to severe life-threatening anaphylactic reactions with angioedema. AIMS: In this study we have determined the prevalence of various cutaneous, oropharyngeal and ophthalmic manifestations of lepidopterism at a tertiary health care center. METHODS: All clinically diagnosed cases of lepidopterism were recruited…

Genome assembly of Thaumatotibia leucotreta, a major polyphagous pest of agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa.

The false codling moth (FCM; Thaumatotibia leucotreta, Meyrick; Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a highly polyphagous, major agricultural pest indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa. With growing international trade, there is an increasing concern about introducing this pest into other countries. In South Africa, FCM poses a risk to multiple crops, and is currently suppressed through a combination of chemical, microbial, cultural, augmentative biological control, and the sterile insect technique. Compared with other lepidopteran agricultural pests, such as codling moth Cydia pomonella, genetic and other

Youngest reported Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis case.

PURPOSE: Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis (SHAPU) is a mysterious but rapidly devastating intraocular inflammatory disease reported only from Nepal during odd years after monsoon. Though it predominantly affects children, it has been reported between 9 months and 50 years age. But herein, we report a case of SHAPU in a 38-days-baby during 2017 SHAPU outbreak. OBSERVATIONS: Parents of a 38-days-healthy male baby from Pokhara noticed redness in child's right eye since 5 days (October 2017). They noticed the fall of a white moth from the tubelight over the child's face 1-day prior to symptom onset

Stem cell autotomy and niche interaction in different systems.

The best known cases of cell autotomy are the formation of erythrocytes and thrombocytes (platelets) from progenitor cells that reside in special niches. Recently, autotomy of stem cells and its enigmatic interaction with the niche has been reported from male germline stem cells (GSCs) in several insect species. First described in lepidopterans, the silkmoth, followed by the gipsy moth and consecutively in hemipterans, foremost the milkweed bug. In both, moths and the milkweed bug, GSCs form finger-like projections toward the niche, the apical cells (homologs of the hub cells in Drosophila). W…

Entomopathogenic nematodes: natural enemies of root-feeding caterpillars on bush lupine.

A new species of soil-dwelling entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis hepialus killed up to 100% (mean=72%) of root-boring caterpillars of a ghost moth Hepialus californicus in coastal shrub lands. When unchecked, ghost moth caterpillars killed bush lupine, Lupinus arboreus. Here we describe this strange food chain. Although unappreciated by ecologists, entomopathogenic nematodes are widespread and probably one of the most important groups of natural enemies for underground insects. The free-living infective juvenile (IJ) of entomopathogenic nematodes searches for host insects in the soil.
