Blood flow in major cerebral arteries measured by phase-contrast cine MR.

PURPOSE: To measure mean blood flow in individual cerebral arteries (carotid, basilar, anterior cerebral, middle cerebral, and posterior cerebral) using a cine phase contrast MR pulse sequence. METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers (22 to 38 years of age) were studied. The cine phase-contrast section was positioned perpendicular to the vessel of interest using oblique scanning planes. This pulse sequence used a velocity encoding range of 60 to 250 cm/sec. From the velocity and area measurements on the cine images, mean blood flow was calculated in milliliters per minute and milliliters per cardiac

Diagnosis and treatment of submucous cleft palate: a review of 108 cases.

The files of 108 patients with submucous cleft palate were reviewed. Special attention was focused on the findings of videonasoendoscopy, videofluoroscopy, and audiometry. Velopharyngeal insufficiency was found in 53 percent of the cases. Since surgical correction is indicated only in the presence of insufficiency, waiting until speech has developed is recommended before considering treatment. A relationship between coronal pattern of velopharyngeal closure and velopharyngeal insufficiency was found. This relationship appears to be caused by the malformation of the musculus uvulae in the submu

Vitreous cinematography in the study of vitreoretinal diseases.

A new technique of vitreous cinematography involves scanning of the vitreous cavity using optical sections to provide objective, reproducible information on the dynamics of the posterior vitreous and vitreoretinal relationships. Using a newly developed preset lens (El Bayadi-Kajiura lens), this technique makes it possible to document an entire optical section of the posterior vitreous. This is done by mechanically displacing the vitreous so that maximum reflectivity can be obtained from the vitreous gel. This article describes the technique and presents clinical examples documenting complete a

Aberrant Cortical Integration in First-Episode Psychosis During Natural Audiovisual Processing.

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of psychotic disorders have reported both hypoactivity and hyperactivity in numerous brain regions. In line with the dysconnection hypothesis, these regions include cortical integrative hub regions. However, most earlier studies focused on a single cognitive function at a time, assessed by delivering artificial stimuli to patients with chronic psychosis. Thus, it remains unresolved whether these findings are present already in early psychosis and whether they translate to real-life-like conditions that require multisensory processing an

Gaze stability of observers watching Op Art pictures.

It has been the matter of some debate why we can experience vivid dynamic illusions when looking at static pictures composed from simple black and white patterns. The impression of illusory motion is particularly strong when viewing some of the works of 'Op Artists, such as Bridget Riley's painting Fall. Explanations of the illusory motion have ranged from retinal to cortical mechanisms, and an important role has been attributed to eye movements. To assess the possible contribution of eye movements to the illusory-motion percept we studied the strength of the illusion under different viewing c

Effects of arousal and valence on standing kinematics and kinetics in young men: An approach using a motion capture system.

The emotional impact on body kinematics and kinetics during quiet standing was investigated using a motion capture system. Twenty-two participants stood on a force plate while viewing affective pictures for 72 s. The task was repeated six times under different picture conditions categorized by arousal (High and Low) and valence (Unpleasant, Neutral, and Pleasant). We analyzed variabilities of the center of mass, lower-limb joint angles (ankle, knee, and hip), and joint torques. Additionally, breathing parameters, including tidal volume, breathing rate, and minute ventilation, were estimated ba

Animated media content and the Papageno effect: Experimental evidence for the suicide-preventive potential of coping-oriented narratives in the series BoJack Horseman.

Suicide-related media portrayals can exert both harmful and protective effects on suicide-related outcomes, with the Papageno effect describing suicide-preventive influences of coping-oriented portrayals. Adult animated series have largely been absent from research, despite animation's popularity and its distinctive capacity to externalize psychological states, rendering experiences of mental health crises and recovery particularly accessible to viewers. Using an experimental design (N = 146) with pre- and post-measures of suicidal thoughts, participants watched a brief video clip from the Net

Tribute to Dr Milton Diamond: Twin Studies of Transsexuality/Twin Research Reviews: Loss of a Twin Brother (Recent Memoir); Oxytocin Adminstration During Twin Delivery; Models of Monochorionic Twinning; Twins' Brain Responses to Watching Films/Human Interest: Oldest Conjoined Twins Pass Away; Twins Discordant for Child Abuse; Twins Married to Twins; Rare Quadruplet Set Delivered; Questions of Coincidence; Reared-Apart Twin Valedictorians.

A tribute to the life and career of Dr Milton Diamond, a leading figure in twin studies of transsexuality and gender identity, is presented. Dr Diamond is famous for revealing the truth about the unsuccessful effort to change a monozygotic male Canadian twin into a female, following accidental ablation of his penis during circumcision. A short summary of recent twin research on human sexuality and transsexuality, focused on Dr Diamond's contributions, is then presented. The tribute and overview are followed by research reviews involving the loss of a twin brother; oxytocin adminstration during

Using child-friendly movie stimuli to study the development of face, place, and object regions from age 3 to 12 years.

Scanning young children while they watch short, engaging, commercially-produced movies has emerged as a promising approach for increasing data retention and quality. Movie stimuli also evoke a richer variety of cognitive processes than traditional experiments, allowing the study of multiple aspects of brain development simultaneously. However, because these stimuli are uncontrolled, it is unclear how effectively distinct profiles of brain activity can be distinguished from the resulting data. Here we develop an approach for identifying multiple distinct subject-specific Regions of Interest (ss

Injuries Depicted in Sport-Related Films.

The perception that children and adolescents have of injuries may be influenced by their depiction in sport-related films. The objective of this study was to determine the depiction of injuries in a select number of sport-related films. Forty-four films were analyzed. Injury category, on-the-field management, and long-term management were determined for each injury. Major injuries were defined as injuries requiring prompt intervention and immediate discontinuation of sport participation. A total of 49 injuries were depicted, categorized as fracture (n = 11), contusion (n = 10), brain concussio

Vicarious learning of children's social-anxiety-related fear beliefs and emotional Stroop bias.

Models of social anxiety suggest that negative social experiences contribute to the development of social anxiety, and this is supported by self-report research. However, there is relatively little experimental evidence for the effects of learning experiences on social cognitions. The current study examined the effect of observing a social performance situation with a negative outcome on children's (8 to 11 years old) fear-related beliefs and cognitive processing. Two groups of children were each shown 1 of 2 animated films of a person trying to score in basketball while being observed by othe

Cyclical bending movements induced locally by successive iontophoretic application of ATP to an elastase-treated flagellar axoneme.

To elucidate the mechanism of oscillatory bending in cilia and flagella, we studied the effect of protease digestion on the response of axonemes to localized application of ATP. When the axonemes were treated with elastase and then reactivated locally by ATP iontophoresis, a pair of local bends were formed due to localized unidirectional sliding in the vicinity of the ATP pipette. Upon repeated application of ATP, the direction of bending with respect to the sperm head axis changed cyclically from side to side over several cycles. The bends were planar and similar to those observed in axonemes

The effect of an acute hoof wall angulation on the stride kinematics of trotting horses.

High speed cinematography was used to describe the stride kinematics in a group of six, sound horses subjected to two farriery treatments, designated 'normal' and 'acute' hoof angulation. Normal was defined as having the dorsal hoof wall aligned with the pastern axis, whereas the acute hoof angulation was approximately 10 degrees lower than the normal angle for the individual horse. The acute angle was achieved by allowing the toes to grow relatively longer than the heels. The results of a multivariate analysis of variance showed significant differences between the two farriery treatments in t

Quantification of head motion in children during various fMRI language tasks.

PURPOSE: Head motion during functional MRI scanning can lead to signal artifact, a problem often more severe with children. However, the documentation for the characteristics of head motion in children during various language functional tasks is very limited in the current literature. This report characterizes head motion in children during fMRI as a function of age, sex, and task. METHODS: Head motion during four different fMRI language tasks was investigated in a group of 323 healthy children between the age of 5 and 18 years. A repeated measures ANOVA analysis was used to study the impact

A study of sound transmission in an abstract middle ear using physical and finite element models.

The classical picture of middle ear (ME) transmission has the tympanic membrane (TM) as a piston and the ME cavity as a vacuum. In reality, the TM moves in a complex multiphasic pattern and substantial pressure is radiated into the ME cavity by the motion of the TM. This study explores ME transmission with a simple model, using a tube terminated with a plastic membrane. Membrane motion was measured with a laser interferometer and pressure on both sides of the membrane with micro-sensors that could be positioned close to the membrane without disturbance. A finite element model of the system exp
