BACKGROUND: During the last 10 years, the number of motorcycle riders in the United States has risen sharply. The corresponding increase in fatalities observed during this time may be because of the increase in riders, or because the number of states that mandate universal helmet use has decreased. We examined the effect of the repeal of Florida's helmet law in July 2000 to test the hypothesis that the increase in fatalities observed after repeal resulted from an increase in the number of motorcycle riders.
METHODS: We identified all motorcycle fatalities (N = 197) in Miami-Dade county for a

Injury recidivism among trauma patients may be related to an individual pattern of high risk behaviors. The extent to which an injury episode modifies this behavior pattern is unknown. A self report, voluntary, anonymous, cross sectional survey was administered to motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riders at a popular recreation site. Data included demographics, injury history, and current usage of helmet and protective gear. Two hundred eighty surveys were completed. History of ATV/motorcycle related minor and major injury were reported by 21% and 9%, respectively. Persons with a histor

A cohort of 4729 junior college students in an urban and a rural area in Taiwan was followed up for a period of 20 months. Students' characteristics, including riding exposures, as well as human, vehicular, and environmental factors were collected using one initial and three follow-up questionnaires. The Anderson-Gill (AG) multiplicative intensity model was used to determine the risk of a motorcycle crash over time while also allowing for the modeling of multiple events. The average response rate for the four assessments was 92%. The adjusted relative hazard (RH) for students living in the rur

STUDY OBJECTIVE: In March 2000, an estimated 500,000 people attended an annual motorcycle rally in Daytona Beach, FL, where approximately 64,000 residents live year-round. The media reported 15 deaths during this 10-day event. To more comprehensively assess the extent of trauma and need for emergency medical care, we investigated all motorcycle crashes, regardless of outcome.
METHODS: Motorcycle-related crash data from local medical examiner, hospital, emergency medical services (EMS), and police sources were linked. Frequencies of crashes, injuries, hospitalizations, and deaths were determin

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine the impact of Maryland's all-rider motorcycle helmet law (enacted on October 1, 1992) on preventing deaths and traumatic brain injuries among motorcyclists.
METHODS: Statewide motorcyclist fatalities occurring during seasonally comparable 33-month periods immediately preceding and following enactment of the law were compared.
RESULTS: The motorcyclist fatality rate dropped from 10.3 per 10 000 registered motorcycles prelaw to 4.5 postlaw despite almost identical numbers of registered motorcycles. Motorcyclists wearing helmets had a lower risk of tra

We report a rare case of the death of a stunt man who jumped into the sea driving a motorcycle on location for a TV drama. A special ramp had been constructed for the jump. The stunt man and a passenger drove up the ramp at a speed of 60-70 km/h and jumped into the sea from a height of about five metres. Both men swam up, but the driver fell unconscious at the surface. He was sent to hospital, but did not recover. The autopsy revealed a deep laceration of the right axilla with complete rupture of the axillary artery, bone fractures of the right ribs and the right pelvis, and a small laceration

OBJECTIVES: The incidence, type, severity, and costs of crash-related injuries requiring hospitalization or resulting in death were compared for helmeted and unhelmeted motorcyclists.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of injured motorcyclists in Washington State in 1989. Motorcycle crash data were linked to statewide hospitalization and death data.
RESULTS: The 2090 crashes included in this study resulted in 409 hospitalizations (20%) and 59 fatalities (28%). Although unhelmeted motorcyclists were only slightly more likely to be hospitalized overall, they were more severely inju

This study revealed a significant decrease in mortality from injuries sustained by motorcycle accidents following the decree promulgated in 1992 for compulsory use of safety helmets by motorcyclists and pillion riders. The helmets can help only in protection of head injury but do not affect the number of accidents. This safety device can not protect any serious injuries of the neck, chest or internal organs which could result in death or permanent disability. To gain maximum benefit from the law, the helmets should be of standard specification and worn properly. Education to drivers and pillio

In motorcycle accidents involving two riders, medicolegal identification of the driver is necessary when one or both riders die. It is particularly important in the latter case, because the survivor almost always insists that he or she was not driving. One characteristic injury that distinguishes the driver from the passenger is inguinal contusion-laceration (accompanied internally by pelvic fracture). This injury, caused by collision of the pelvis with the fuel tank, identifies the driver.

In a consecutive series of 132 motorcycle and moped riders killed in 1977-1983 in southern Sweden and examined post mortem, almost half of the fatal injuries of the head and neck occurred remote from the point of impact, namely certain intracranial injuries without fractures, ring fractures of the base of the skull, disruption of the junction of the head and neck and injuries of the cervical spine. Ring fractures of the base of the skull were noticeably more frequent in motorcyclists than in car occupants who died. Injuries occurring remote from the point of impact were often the result of imp

ObjectiveThis research investigated effects for new traffic markings on the user behaviour of motorcycle riders.BackgroundAcross motorised vehicles, motorcycles represent the most vulnerable road users.MethodA road sign and traffic markings were installed at six trial sites. Data from video cameras at each site provided measures of rider behaviour in relation to speed, road position, brake use, and use of the traffic markings, before and after installations. Throughout this research 4652 motorcycle riders travelled through the sites. Of these 1542 riders were analysed in more detail to investi

RATIONALE: Traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva (PSV) is a rare but life-threatening condition, often resulting from blunt chest trauma. Rapid progress and a high risk of rupture highlight the importance of prompt diagnosis and intervention. We present a case of a rare pseudoaneurysm linked to the right coronary sinus after blunt chest trauma.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 54-year-old male presented with chest pain, loss of consciousness, and coma following a motorcycle accident. Initial management included invasive ventilation at a local hospital before transfer for specialized care.

Metatarsal bone fractures are one of the most frequent foot injuries, especially after motor vehicle accidents in children. This case report briefly demonstrated a rare instance of pediatric all-metatarsal fractures of the left foot in an adolescent patient with polytrauma after a motorcycle accident. This case report illustrated the surgical procedure's potential for healing pediatric foot fractures in teenage patients after polytrauma. In the examination of a 16-year-old male patient brought to the emergency department after a motorcycle accident, we detected a right foot third finger proxim

Single-vehicle crashes are of major concern in both developed as well as in Low Middle Income Countries due to the severity of injuries, particularly fatal accidents. In India, a significant proportion of crashes are single-vehicle crashes. The vehicles which are involved in accidents due to causes such as self skidding, hitting stationary objects, trees that are simply contributed by the drivers themselves are referred to as out-of-control single-vehicle crashes. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the risk factors associated with single-vehicle motorcycle collisions in Tamilnadu,

BACKGROUND: The maxillofacial structures are commonly affected in motorcycle crashes, with the mandible being one of the most frequently fractured bones. Helmets have been shown to have a protective effect in preventing maxillofacial injuries, however, its effect on the occurrence of mandibular fractures is not very well established.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the pattern of mandibular fractures among motorcycle crash victims in Tanzania, and determine the role of helmets in occurrence of mandibular fractures among the motorcyclists.
METHODOLOGY: This was a 6-months prospective, cross-sectional
